What to Do When an HDD Starts Clicking or Disappearing

Persistent hard clicks, grinding, or scraping can signal physical HDD trouble. If the data matters, power down and seek recovery advice before further troubleshooting.

If a hard drive with important data is making persistent hard clicks, grinding, or scraping—or keeps disappearing—stop using it and power it down. Avoid diagnostics, repair utilities, and recovery software; contact a professional data-recovery provider for advice before trying more troubleshooting. Occasional soft clicks can be normal, and a quiet external drive may have a cable or power problem, but those are different situations.

First, decide whether continued use could put the data at risk

A click alone does not prove a hard disk drive (HDD) is failing. Western Digital (WD) says some drive sounds are normal, and Seagate notes that soft clicks can occur during reading, writing, or head movement. The pattern and severity matter more than the mere presence of a sound. WD’s noise guidance and Seagate’s sound guide describe these distinctions.

  • Occasional, soft clicks and otherwise normal operation: The sound may be ordinary. If the drive is accessible and the data is not backed up, make a backup only if the drive is operating normally and there are no signs of physical trouble.
  • Persistent hard clicks, repeated clunks, grinding, or scraping: Treat this as a possible mechanical problem, especially if the drive also vanishes or becomes unstable. Seagate says persistent hard clicking with clunking or grinding likely indicates a physical issue, and continued operation during grinding could damage platters.
  • Quiet drive that is not recognized or will not spin up: A cable, port, or power problem may be responsible. Consider limited connection checks only if there is no severe noise suggesting mechanical failure.

If the data matters and the drive has severe or persistent mechanical-sounding noise, prioritize preserving the data over finding out whether the drive can still run.

What to do when the drive makes severe or persistent noises

  1. Stop activity and power down. Shut down the computer or disconnect the external drive safely if possible, then leave the drive off.
  2. Do not run software or diagnostics. Avoid file-recovery programs, repair utilities, and tests that keep the drive operating. Seagate advises against DIY software and further power-up when unusual noise suggests physical failure.
  3. Ask a professional recovery provider for guidance. Explain the sounds, when the drive began disappearing, and whether it is internal or external. Ask what to do before reconnecting or shipping it; do not assume a provider can guarantee recovery.

WD says it does not provide data-recovery services and refers customers to third-party partners. It also disclaims responsibility for those providers, so a referral is not a guarantee or endorsement. See WD’s My Passport support guidance for its explanation.

SABRENT USB 3.0 to SATA Hard Drive Docking Station, 2.5/3.5in (EC-DFLT)
  • SATA DRIVES ONLY — 2.5in & 3.5in: Works with SATA I/II/III hard drives and SSDs. Does NOT support IDE/PATA, M.2 NVMe, M.2 SATA, SAS, or drives already in a USB enclosure. Check your drive's connector before ordering — a bare SATA drive has a wide flat L-shaped edge connector, not a ribbon cable or a small M.2 gold-finger card.
  • USB TYPE-A HOST CABLE — NOT A USB-C PORT: The included host cable ends in USB Type-A and plugs into a USB 3.0 Type-A port. If your computer has only USB-C ports, you will need a USB-C to USB-A adapter, which is not included. For stable operation plug directly into the computer — USB hubs and USB 2.0 ports may cause intermittent disconnections.
  • REAL-WORLD SPEED, NOT INTERFACE MATH: USB 3.0 with UASP support (UASP-capable host required). Typical mechanical HDD transfer speeds are 100-160 MB/s, which is the drive's own limit, not the port's; SSD speeds vary up to the USB interface maximum. Backward compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1.
  • 12V POWER ADAPTER INCLUDED — REQUIRED FOR 3.5in DRIVES: A 12V/2A AC power adapter is in the box and a wall outlet is needed. 3.5in HDDs cannot run on USB power alone — without the adapter the drive will fail to spin up or drop out during use. 2.5in drives are generally bus-powered, but the adapter is recommended for stability.
  • PLUG AND PLAY, TOOL-FREE, HOT-SWAP: No drivers on Windows 10/11, macOS, or Linux. Lay-flat bay accepts a bare drive without tools, swaps without rebooting, and an LED shows power and activity. Note: S.M.A.R.T. diagnostics are not passed through the USB bridge, and on macOS a drive may need remounting after sleep. Drive not included.

When a limited cable or power check makes sense

If the drive is quiet and the symptoms could plausibly come from an external connection, a single, compatible check may help distinguish a connection problem from a drive fault. WD lists checking the cable, trying another USB port, or using another computer for certain My Passport recognition or spin-up problems. Seagate also lists a failed cable or external power supply as a possible cause. Follow the instructions for your model and use only a compatible cable or power supply.

  • Check that the cable and power supply are firmly connected and appropriate for the drive.
  • If available, try one known-compatible cable or another USB port, or test the drive on another computer.
  • Stop if hard clicking, grinding, scraping, or repeated clunking begins, or if the drive remains unstable or keeps disappearing.

These checks can help with a connection or power issue; they do not repair mechanical damage. Do not turn them into repeated unplugging, reconnecting, or power cycling. See Seagate’s clicking-sounds guidance and WD’s My Passport troubleshooting page.

After the data is safe

Once you have recovered the data or replaced the drive, keep multiple copies on separate drives. WD recommends maintaining copies on different drives; a separate external drive can be part of that plan. A backup drive is prevention for future data loss, not a fix for a clicking HDD, and it is not a reason to copy files from a drive showing likely mechanical failure. WD’s external-drive troubleshooting and tips cover its backup recommendation.
