Ask an employee near the checkout: “Is there a staffed register open, or can someone help me check out?” If no lane is available, ask which checkout option is operating or request the manager on duty. Checkout options vary by store and can change during the day, so confirm what is available at that location rather than assuming a particular service is offered.
What to do first
- Look for an open staffed lane or an employee near the checkout area.
- Ask directly: “Is there a staffed register open, or can someone help me check out?”
- If no option is visible, ask the employee or manager on duty which register or service is operating. Some retailers offer store-specific mobile checkout or other alternatives, but availability and eligibility vary.
- If the issue remains unresolved, contact the retailer’s customer-service channel. Note the store location and time if you plan to follow up.
Can you ask for a cashier?
Yes. You can ask whether a staffed register is open, but a cashier may not be available at every retailer or at every moment. Walmart, for example, says shoppers who prefer a cashier can choose that option, and that Customer Host associates can direct shoppers to registers and help with checkout. What if no staffed lane is open?
Ask an employee or manager what checkout method is available right then. Depending on the retailer and store, an employee may be able to help, or there may be another service; do not assume that an employee can complete the transaction or that an app-based option is enabled at that location.

Some alternatives have specific eligibility requirements. Walmart says Walmart+ members may use its Scan & Go feature to scan items while shopping. Check whether it is available at that store and whether you qualify before relying on it. Walmart’s checkout guidance

What if you need an accessible checkout?
Tell staff what is preventing you from using the available checkout and request an accessible staffed lane or assistance. Focus on the help you need to complete the purchase; legal requirements can depend on the circumstances and location.
A specific example is the 2018 agreement between the U.S. Department of Justice and Stop & Shop. Under its terms, Stop & Shop agreed to keep at least one staffed and one self-service accessible checkout aisle open during store hours at its stores. The agreement followed an investigation concerning accessibility at certain Rhode Island locations; Stop & Shop disputed the government’s findings while agreeing to the settlement. Why checkout options differ by store
Retailers set their own checkout arrangements, and an individual store’s open lanes can change during the day. Company-wide announcements can illustrate how options work without establishing what is open at your location.
Target reported in May 2025 that it had introduced Express Self-Checkout in March 2024, with a 10-item limit at most of its nearly 2,000 stores. The company said traditional staffed lanes remained an option for larger carts. Target also reported more than 25,600 staffed lanes and a nearly 8% improvement in total transaction times after checkout changes; those figures are Target’s own reports, not independent findings or a promise about wait times at a particular store. Rules can also vary by jurisdiction and change over time. In a May 21, 2026 update, the Rhode Island General Assembly said the Senate had passed bill 2026-S 2342Aaa, a proposal to set a minimum staffed-checkout ratio in grocery stores with self-checkout, and that the measure was headed to the House. If the store cannot resolve the issue, follow up through the retailer’s customer-service channel with the location and time.
