What’s actually slowing this PC down?

First check whether the computer detects the drive at all or merely fails to show its volume in File Explorer or Finder. Open the system disk utility before changing anything: on Windows, use Disk Management; on Mac, use Disk Utility. If the device contains files you need, do not initialize, format, erase, or delete its partitions—those actions can destroy data.
Start with the safe checks
- Check the connection. Reseat the flash drive, SD card, or adapter. Confirm the card is inserted in the correct orientation and the reader supports that card type. Try another USB port.
- Test another reader or computer, if available. For an SD card, use a compatible reader. If the card works elsewhere, that points toward the original port, reader, adapter, or computer setup, though it does not prove which one is at fault. SanDisk recommends cross-checking the device on another computer in its removable-drive troubleshooting guidance.
- Inspect the system disk utility. A device missing from File Explorer or Finder may still be detected by the operating system but lack an assigned drive letter or mounted volume.
SanDisk’s Windows and macOS troubleshooting article and removable-storage setup and troubleshooting tips also recommend checking the device and reader connections.
Check the drive in Windows
Open Disk Management
On Windows 10 or Windows 11, right-click Start and select Disk Management, search for “Create and format hard disk partitions,” or press Windows+R, enter diskmgmt.msc, and press Enter. Disk Management is built into both Windows versions, according to Microsoft’s Disk Management guide.
Find the device by its capacity and inspect its status. If it is listed as Offline, bringing it Online may make it accessible. If the partition is healthy but has no drive letter, assigning an available letter may make it appear in File Explorer. Some USB disks are already formatted and assigned a letter, so initialization is not automatically required. Microsoft’s Disk Management troubleshooting guidance describes these states and options.

Stop if Windows shows RAW, unallocated, or an initialize prompt
If the device holds files you need, do not format it, initialize it, or create or delete partitions to make it appear. Microsoft warns that formatting destroys data and says to format a RAW volume only when the disk is known to be empty—not when you are trying to recover files. Treat an initialize or format prompt as a reason to pause, not as a routine repair step. See Microsoft’s troubleshooting instructions.
If you have confirmed the device is empty and intend to reuse it, formatting may be appropriate, but first verify that you selected the correct disk and that its file system will work with the devices you plan to use.

Check the card or drive on a Mac
Inspect Disk Utility
Open Disk Utility and check whether the storage device and its volume appear. If the device is listed but its volume is not mounted, the Mac detects at least part of the hardware; the problem may be the volume’s mount state rather than the USB connection itself. That does not establish that the files are healthy.
Use First Aid cautiously
Apple’s Disk Utility instructions say to run First Aid on each volume and container, then on the storage device itself. First Aid can check and repair some formatting or directory-structure problems, but Apple cautions that it cannot detect or repair every disk problem. If Disk Utility reports that the disk is about to fail, Apple advises backing up data and replacing the disk. Follow Apple’s Disk Utility repair instructions.

If files are important and inaccessible, prioritize preserving them before trying erase or reformat options. Replacing a failing card or drive does not recover its contents.
Use what you see to choose the next step
| What you find | What it suggests | Safer next step |
|---|---|---|
| Device appears in Disk Management or Disk Utility, but not in File Explorer or Finder | The computer detects at least part of it; a missing drive letter, unmounted volume, or volume problem may explain why it is not visible in the file browser. | Check the volume status and mount or drive-letter state. Do not assume the files are healthy just because the device is listed. |
| Card or drive works in another reader or computer | The original port, reader, adapter, or computer configuration becomes a more likely cause. This comparison narrows the possibilities but does not identify the failed component. | Check the original reader and connection. For SD media, confirm the alternate reader supports the card type. |
| Device is absent from the disk utility on multiple computers | A connection, reader-compatibility, or hardware problem is possible; the available checks cannot identify the failed component. | Inspect the connector and test a compatible reader. If the data matters, avoid repeated repair attempts that could alter the media. |
| Windows reports RAW or unallocated space, or asks to initialize or format | The volume is not currently accessible in its usual form. Formatting destroys data. | Stop if files matter. Do not initialize, format, or repartition the device while trying to recover them. |
| Mac Disk Utility reports that the disk is about to fail | Apple’s guidance treats this as a failure warning, not a problem First Aid can necessarily fix. | Back up what you can and replace the disk. If data is inaccessible, replacement alone will not recover it. |
If the computer still cannot see it
After checking the connection, a compatible reader, another port, and another computer, consider whether the device itself may have failed. The checks above can help isolate the likely area, but they cannot diagnose a specific failed component. If the files are valuable, avoid further erase, format, initialization, or partition changes and consider professional data-recovery advice before replacing or reusing the media.

If the storage is empty or its contents are no longer needed and testing points to a failed reader or drive, a replacement may restore access to storage. For an SD reader, match the connector and supported SD or microSD formats to both the card and computer. A new card or flash drive does not restore files from the old one.
