The explorer can show whether it is still pending, confirmed successfully, confirmed with a failure, or not visible on the network. What to do next depends on that status and on the blockchain: Ethereum-style fee replacement and Bitcoin’s replace-by-fee rules are not interchangeable.
How to check a pending or failed transaction
- Identify the network you used. A transaction on Ethereum, Bitcoin, or another network must be checked with that network’s explorer.
- Look up the transaction hash. If you do not have it, search the public sending address in the correct explorer and locate the transaction.
- Check the displayed status and details. Confirm the sender, recipient, amount, and whether the transaction is pending, included successfully, included with a failure, or absent.
- Compare the explorer with your wallet. A wallet’s activity screen can show local status that does not match the network. If the wallet says “pending” but the explorer does not show a corresponding pending transaction, follow that wallet’s official guidance before resetting activity.
What to do if an Ethereum transaction is pending
A pending Ethereum transaction may have offered a fee too low for current network demand. Ethereum.org also lists insufficient ETH for gas and a gas limit that is too low during high traffic among possible causes. Check the wallet’s current fee estimate and the transaction details before deciding whether to wait or replace it.
Wait if the transaction is not urgent
If the fee bid is below what validators are currently including, the transaction may remain pending until demand changes or it is replaced. There is no fixed wait time that guarantees confirmation. Avoid sending a second payment to the same recipient unless you understand how the wallet handles the first transaction and its nonce.
Use Speed up if your wallet supports it
On supported Ethereum-compatible wallets, Speed up resubmits the original transaction with a higher fee and the same nonce. This is an attempt to have the replacement included sooner, not a guarantee; the higher fee can increase what you spend if it is included. MetaMask documents its speed-up and cancellation workflow in its transaction guidance. Wallet labels and availability can vary by version and network.

Cancel by submitting a competing transaction only when appropriate
Ethereum-style accounts process transactions in nonce order. A wallet may attempt cancellation by submitting a competing transaction with the same nonce; Ethereum.org describes a zero-value send to yourself as one method. The original is not cancelled merely because you pressed a button or no longer see it in wallet history. The replacement must take effect on the network.
Earlier pending nonces can block later transactions from being processed. If several transactions are queued, cancellation or replacement may need to address the earliest pending nonce first. Follow your wallet’s current instructions and fee estimates rather than copying a fixed fee from an old screenshot or forum post.

Verify the replacement before taking another action
After speeding up or attempting cancellation, look up the new transaction on the explorer and confirm its status. MetaMask’s account reset or clear-activity function changes local wallet state; it does not erase a transaction that remains pending on the network. Use that function only for the local display issue described in the wallet’s reset guidance.
Wait, speed up, or replace: which option fits?
| Option | When it may fit | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Wait | The transaction is pending and not urgent. | Confirmation timing depends on network demand and the offered fee; no fixed wait guarantees inclusion. |
| Speed up | A supported Ethereum-compatible wallet offers a higher-fee replacement for the pending transaction. | It may cost more if included, and it is an attempt rather than a guarantee. |
| Cancel or replace | A supported wallet can submit a competing transaction under the network’s replacement rules. | The original may remain active until the replacement takes effect. Ethereum nonce order matters; Bitcoin uses different rules. |
What to do if a Bitcoin transaction is pending
Bitcoin confirmations do not arrive on a guaranteed schedule. Bitcoin.org describes blocks as being added approximately every 10 minutes on average, while noting that the timing is probabilistic and has no guaranteed minimum or maximum delay. A transaction with a fee below what the network is currently prioritizing can take longer.

Bitcoin replacement behavior differs from Ethereum’s same-nonce process. BIP 125 describes opt-in replace-by-fee signaling and relay conditions, so replacement depends on the transaction and the relevant wallet or node behavior. Use the sending wallet’s Bitcoin-specific replace-by-fee or child-pays-for-parent instructions, if supported; do not apply Ethereum cancellation steps to Bitcoin.
What to do if a transaction is confirmed but failed
A confirmed failure is different from a pending transaction: a cancellation attempt is no longer the remedy. On Ethereum, gas pays for computation even when execution fails. Ethereum.org’s gas and fees overview explains that the fee is paid whether a transaction succeeds or fails.

Inspect the explorer receipt and the wallet or application error before retrying. A higher gas price alone will not necessarily fix an incorrect input or a contract condition that caused execution to fail. Determine the cause first, then decide whether a corrected transaction is appropriate.

Never share a seed phrase or private key with someone claiming they can recover, cancel, or speed up a transaction. A support agent cannot reverse a transaction that has been confirmed on a blockchain. If funds went to the wrong recipient, recovery depends on the recipient or other circumstances, not a network rollback.
