Do not assume that money leaving your bank, or a temporary trading credit, means the transfer has settled and is withdrawable.
1. Establish what actually happened
“Delayed” can describe several different events. A bank debit, an exchange credit usable for trading and a settled balance that can be withdrawn are separate milestones. A transfer can leave your bank while the exchange is still waiting for its bank to receive or reconcile the payment. Conversely, an exchange can show a provisional cash credit while its settlement hold prevents withdrawal.

Incoming deposit
An incoming deposit moves fiat currency from your bank to the exchange. Record the exchange’s exact status, such as pending, on hold, missing, declined or returned. Check whether the bank statement says pending, posted or reversed; those labels describe the bank’s side, not necessarily the exchange’s receipt.
Outgoing withdrawal
An outgoing withdrawal moves fiat from the exchange to your bank. Confirm that the exchange has marked it processed or sent, rather than merely requested or under review. A bank may not display an incoming credit until its own posting process is complete.

Not a bank transfer
A crypto withdrawal to a blockchain address follows a different process and is outside this troubleshooting path. Do not apply ACH or wire timing to a digital-asset transaction.
2. Check whether the delay is still within the normal window
Use the estimate published for your exchange, country, account type and payment rail. There is no universal “bank transfer to a crypto exchange” time. Weekends, U.S. federal holidays, intermediary-bank processing and an exchange’s own review can all change the elapsed time.

These figures are service-specific descriptions, not guarantees for another exchange or rail. Gemini’s four-to-five-business-day statement applies to U.S. ACH; it does not set a timetable for an international transfer or a wire. Coinbase’s three-to-five-day language describes its bank request and hold process, not a promise that every deposit settles in that period.

Open the exchange’s current deposit instructions rather than relying on an old screenshot or a saved beneficiary. Compare every field on the bank receipt with those instructions.

- Currency: Confirm that the account accepts the currency you sent. A USD instruction cannot be substituted for a EUR or GBP payment without the exchange’s permission.
- Rail: Verify ACH, domestic wire, Fedwire or the applicable local system. ACH and wire instructions are not interchangeable.
- Receiving account: Check the legal account name, routing number, account number, SWIFT or other identifiers exactly as displayed.
- Reference: Enter the memo, unique deposit reference or beneficiary message exactly where the bank requires it. A missing reference can prevent automatic matching.
- Amount and date: Compare the sent amount, currency conversion (if any), fee treatment and value date.
Kraken says a missing deposit can mean its bank has not received the money or that an applicable deposit reference was omitted. It also warns that a Fedwire payment sent using ACH instructions will fail and that the return can take up to 10 business days. Do not send a second payment until you understand whether the first is pending, rejected or being returned; duplicate transfers can create a second problem.
4. Verify that the sending account is eligible
Exchanges often require the bank account holder’s name to match the verified exchange account. A payment from a spouse, friend, business, joint account or another exchange may be rejected even when the routing details are correct. Policies differ by product, so read the terms for the exact deposit account shown in your app.
Examples of product-specific restrictions
The cited Crypto.com USD ACH instructions require a direct transfer from the user’s own bank account with a matching account name. They list joint accounts, unsupported sources and use of the wrong payment method among common problems. Its cited USD wire instructions likewise require a domestic USD Wire/Fedwire from an own-name account and identify name mismatch, joint accounts, unsupported sources and wrong rails as common causes. Those rules should not be generalized to every Crypto.com service or another exchange; they illustrate why the exact product instructions control.
Kraken also lists a name mismatch as a reason a deposit or withdrawal may be returned or cancelled. If you recently changed your legal name, changed the bank account, or are using a business account, ask support what documentation is required before initiating another transfer.

5. Look for holds, limits and reviews
A decline or hold does not by itself prove that funds are lost. Exchanges may pause a transfer for settlement, identity verification, risk controls or a manual review.
- Settlement hold: Cash may be credited for trading while withdrawals remain disabled until the bank payment clears.
- Verification hold: An incomplete identity or source-of-funds check can block deposits or withdrawals.
- Funding limit: The amount may exceed a daily, weekly or account-specific limit.
- Bank-requested hold: The bank can stop or review a payment before the exchange receives it.
- Missing reference: The funds may arrive at the exchange’s bank but remain unmatched.
- Duplicate deposit: Repeated attempts can trigger additional review.
- Name or source mismatch: The sending account may not meet the exchange’s eligibility rules.
Kraken says some holds release automatically while others require manual review, and lists limits, name mismatch, a bank-requested hold, missing reference, an unverified account and duplicate deposits among possible causes. Follow the notice in your account; do not open multiple tickets with conflicting information while a review is in progress.
6. Understand provisional credits and withdrawal restrictions
Coinbase’s “Funds temporarily on hold” notice means deposited cash is unavailable for withdrawal. Coinbase says the bank request occurs within three to five days and that the hold ends only after the bank processes the request and Coinbase receives the cash. It also says banking regulations prevent shortening the hold.

Gemini describes a similar distinction for U.S. ACH: deposits take four to five business days to clear and remain unavailable for withdrawal while in transit. Gemini cautions that funds leaving your bank does not indicate that they have reached Gemini’s bank account. Treat a trading credit as provisional until the exchange marks the deposit settled and permits withdrawal.

7. Escalate in the right order
- Save the evidence. Download the bank receipt and exchange activity page. Keep the date, amount, currency, rail, sender and recipient details, reference number, status messages and any bank trace or confirmation number.
- Contact the exchange through an official channel. Use the in-app support route or the verified help center, not a phone number or social-media account found in a search. State whether this is an incoming deposit or outgoing withdrawal and quote the exact status.
- Provide complete documentation. Support may need a receipt showing the full name, originating account, transaction amount and date. Crypto.com’s cited USD-transfer guidance specifically asks users to provide documentation with the full name, originating account and, ideally, the transaction itself.
- Ask the bank for a trace when appropriate. If the bank confirms it sent the payment but the exchange cannot locate it, ask the bank what trace, investigation or recall options apply to that rail. Availability and terminology vary by institution and jurisdiction; a recall is not guaranteed.
- Do not bypass the exchange’s process. Kraken expressly tells customers not to contact its funding providers or payment processors directly about funding problems, warning that doing so can add delays. Follow the exchange’s instruction rather than contacting an intermediary discovered online.
Never send passwords, two-factor codes or a private key to support. Legitimate support should not require control of your crypto wallet to investigate a bank transfer.
8. If the transfer is declined or returned
Read the return notice and wait for the balance to reflect the reversal before deciding what to do next. Correct the underlying issue—wrong rail, ineligible sender, missing reference or exceeded limit—before retrying. Use a new transfer only after official support confirms that the first payment is closed or returned.
A return can reverse a provisional exchange credit. Gemini says a returned U.S. ACH deposit offsets the USD balance by the amount that did not reach Gemini. If the pre-credited funds were already used to buy crypto, Gemini says that amount is debited and the account may show a negative USD balance. Check the resulting balance and settle any deficit according to the exchange’s instructions before attempting another deposit.
9. A practical decision tree
The bank has not debited your account
The payment may not have been released, or the bank may have rejected it before sending. Ask the bank for the rejection reason and whether a corrected payment is permitted. Do not assume the exchange can see a transfer that the bank never released.

The bank shows a debit, but the exchange shows nothing
Recheck the rail, beneficiary, reference and value date. Count the stated business-day window and exclude relevant holidays. If the window has passed, send the receipt and trace information to the exchange; ask the bank to investigate transmission if the exchange still cannot locate it.
The exchange shows pending or on hold
Confirm whether the notice concerns settlement, verification or a manual review. Trading access is not proof of a settled, withdrawable balance. Complete any requested verification and wait for the provider’s stated window unless support instructs otherwise.
The exchange says sent, but your bank has no credit
Confirm the withdrawal destination and beneficiary details, then ask the exchange for its payment reference or trace information. Give that information to your bank through its official channel so it can search the incoming payment.
The payment was returned
Confirm the reversal amount and your exchange balance. Identify the original failure before retrying, especially if the payment used the wrong rail or an account with a different holder name.
10. What not to do
- Do not treat a posted bank debit as proof that the exchange received and settled the funds.
- Do not treat a trading credit as proof that withdrawal is available.
- Do not mix ACH and wire/Fedwire instructions.
- Do not retry repeatedly while the first transfer is unresolved.
- Do not contact an exchange’s payment processor when the exchange tells you not to.
- Do not rely on a generic timeline from another country, currency, product or exchange.
- Do not disclose passwords, authentication codes or wallet keys to anyone claiming to accelerate a return.
11. Information to include in every support request
- Exchange account email or case number, submitted only through the authenticated support channel.
- Deposit or withdrawal direction and the exact status shown.
- Amount, currency, initiation date and value date.
- ACH, wire, Fedwire or other rail.
- Sender account holder name and the receiving details used.
- Deposit reference, memo, bank confirmation and trace number.
- Clear screenshots or PDF receipts with unrelated account numbers and authentication data redacted.
- A concise timeline of what the bank and exchange each reported.
Complete records let the bank and exchange distinguish a transmission problem from an account-review or reconciliation problem. Only those institutions can inspect the individual payment and determine the available remedy.
