Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf your Social Security payment has not arrived, first confirm that the date is actually your scheduled pay date. If an electronic deposit is still missing on that date, contact your bank or financial institution before reporting it to the Social Security Administration (SSA). If the deposit is smaller than expected, compare your benefit history and notices for deductions or overpayment recovery, then contact SSA or Medicare as appropriate. The record—not the size of the change alone—is what can identify the cause.
First, work out which problem you have
A payment that seems wrong can involve three different situations: the bank has not posted an electronic deposit; SSA has not issued or cannot account for the payment; or a payment arrived but its net amount is lower. The right first step depends on which situation applies.

| What you see | What to check first | Who to contact first |
|---|---|---|
| No electronic deposit on the date you expected | Your scheduled date, then whether the bank has posted or delayed the deposit | Your bank or financial institution; if it cannot resolve the issue, SSA |
| No payment and the bank cannot find a deposit | Your SSA account and any payment information or notices | SSA, by phone or through a local office |
| A deposit arrived but is smaller than before | Your current and prior benefit history, SSA or Medicare notices, and any Medicare bill | SSA or Medicare, depending on the record or notice |
Do not assume that a missed deposit and a reduced benefit have the same cause. A bank posting delay does not explain a lower benefit amount, while a deduction may explain a smaller deposit without indicating that the payment is missing.
That distinction also determines what a useful next step looks like: a bank can check whether an electronic deposit is delayed in posting; SSA can review whether a payment is due; and a benefit-history entry, SSA notice, or Medicare bill can help explain a reduced net deposit. Start with the record for the problem you actually see rather than treating every unexpected change as an SSA error.

Confirm your Social Security payment date
Payment timing depends on benefit type and, for many recipients, the beneficiary’s birthday. SSA provides a schedule service with upcoming and past payment dates. Check the schedule for the relevant month and compare it with the date shown in your my Social Security account rather than relying on a date you remember from a previous month.
Common timing patterns
- For most people who applied for benefits after April 30, 1997, Social Security retirement and disability payments are scheduled for the second, third, or fourth Wednesday, based on the beneficiary’s birthday.
- People who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) only are generally paid on the first of the month.
- Some recipients are paid on the third of the month. Check the official schedule and your own account to confirm which date applies to you.
These are general patterns, not a substitute for checking the current schedule. Benefit type and applicable exceptions can affect which date is relevant. If the scheduled date has not yet arrived, the payment is not necessarily late simply because you expected it earlier.
SSA’s schedule service includes upcoming and past dates, which is useful if you are checking a payment after the month has passed as well as one due soon. A remembered payday from another month may not settle the question: verify the date for the particular benefit and month, then use your account to check the payment information for your own case.
If an electronic payment has not arrived
SSA’s FAQ, “How do I report a missing payment?”, instructs recipients to contact their bank or financial institution first if an electronic payment does not arrive on its scheduled pay date. The bank may be experiencing a delay in posting the payment. Start there rather than reporting the deposit as missing to SSA before the scheduled date.
SSA’s exact instruction is: “If you do not receive your electronic payment on the scheduled pay date, please contact your bank or financial institution first.” That sequence matters: check the scheduled date, then give the financial institution the opportunity to check for a posting delay before asking SSA to review a payment that has not shown up.

- Confirm the scheduled date. Check the SSA payment schedule or your my Social Security account for the payment in question.
- Check with your financial institution. Ask whether it can see an incoming Social Security deposit, whether posting is delayed, and whether there is an issue with the account or deposit information.
- Contact SSA if the bank cannot resolve it. Call 1-800-772-1213 or, if you use TTY, 1-800-325-0778. You can also contact a local SSA office. Explain that the payment did not arrive on its scheduled date and what the financial institution told you.
- Ask SSA to review the payment. SSA says it will review the case and replace the payment if one is due. Keep track of whom you contacted and when, along with any information the bank or SSA gave you.
If your payment is not electronic, or you believe it was stolen, tell SSA that when you report the issue so the agency can review the circumstances. SSA’s missing-payment guidance covers late, missing, and stolen payments; the remedy depends on the case. Do not treat a specific replacement timeframe as guaranteed: the applicable rules can depend on the circumstances.
When you report it, be ready to identify the payment date you checked and explain what the bank said. If you contact a local office instead of calling, the same sequence applies: report that the payment is late or missing and ask SSA to review whether it is due. SSA says it will replace a payment if its review finds one is due, but the guidance does not promise that every report will result in an immediate replacement.
If your deposit is lower than expected
Start by comparing the current benefit history with the previous amount. Look for a changed net payment, an explanation of a deduction, or a notice about a benefit adjustment or overpayment. A lower bank deposit does not by itself show whether the underlying benefit changed or whether money was withheld after the benefit was calculated.
Use the account history and correspondence together: an entry can show what was paid, while a notice may explain a change or recovery. If the only document you have is a separate bill, check whether it is a Medicare bill rather than assuming it was taken out of the deposit. The records may point you to different agencies, so first identify whether your question is about the Social Security payment or a Medicare charge.
Check for Medicare premiums or billing
Medicare premiums are usually deducted automatically from Social Security benefits. In some situations, a person receives a bill from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) instead. Where an applicable premium exceeds the Social Security payment, CMS may send a separate bill. Review the benefit statement and any Medicare or CMS notice or bill; do not assume that a smaller deposit means the premium was deducted twice or that the amount is wrong.

Premium amounts and billing arrangements vary by person. If a notice or bill does not explain the change, contact the agency identified on it. The Medicare management information from SSA can help you determine whether the question concerns a deduction from your Social Security benefit or a separate Medicare bill.

In particular, distinguish a premium shown as a deduction from a bill that you are expected to pay separately. Both can relate to Medicare, but the account history and bill are different records. Check the relevant statement and notice before deciding which amount or payment needs an explanation; the general rule that premiums are usually deducted does not establish how your own account is billed.
Look for an overpayment notice
If SSA says it overpaid you, its notice should explain why and describe the amount it says you owe. A recovery withholding can reduce what reaches your bank account. Read the notice carefully before choosing how to respond: an appeal, a waiver, and a request for a lower recovery rate address different concerns.
| Option | When it fits | What you are asking SSA to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Appeal | You disagree that an overpayment occurred or dispute its amount | Whether SSA’s overpayment decision is correct |
| Waiver | You believe repayment should not be required because you cannot afford it or repayment would be unfair | Whether SSA should waive collection under your circumstances |
| Request a lower recovery rate | You accept that recovery is being sought but the proposed withholding is unaffordable | Whether SSA can recover the amount at a lower rate |
These options are not interchangeable. An appeal challenges the overpayment decision or amount; a waiver asks SSA not to collect under the circumstances; a lower-rate request addresses the affordability of the proposed withholding. Use the option that matches your concern, and read the notice for the instructions that apply to that particular case.
SSA says that if you submit a waiver or appeal within 30 days, collection is prevented while it decides the request. That timing statement should not be read as a universal deadline for every action or situation. Follow the instructions and deadlines in your own notice and SSA’s current guidance. If you are unsure which request fits, ask SSA to explain the notice before choosing.

Rules can include conditional timeframes for certain written requests, but those circumstances do not establish one universal reporting deadline for every missing-payment case. For an overpayment, use the notice’s deadline and current SSA instructions. Do not delay a response while trying to apply a timeframe from a different kind of request to your own case.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use the records to identify the cause
There is no reliable way to infer the reason for a change from the amount alone. Compare the records that show the payment, any deduction, and any separate bill. SSA’s account-management information covers direct-deposit details, payment timing, benefit letters, overpayments, and reporting changes.
- Payment date: Check the schedule for the month and the date in your my Social Security account.
- Payment history: Compare the current entry with earlier entries to see whether the amount or payment information changed.
- SSA notices: Look for an explanation of a benefit change, deduction, or overpayment and follow the instructions in the notice.
- Medicare records: Check whether a premium was deducted from the benefit or whether CMS sent a separate bill.
- Deposit details: If the account or deposit information may be wrong, review the direct-deposit details in your SSA account and ask your financial institution what it can confirm.
When you contact SSA or Medicare, describe the specific payment date or amount and refer to the notice or account entry you are asking about. If you contact your bank, ask whether it can locate the expected deposit or identify a posting delay. These questions help keep a payment-timing issue distinct from a benefit or billing question.
It can also help to keep the relevant notice and account entry available during the conversation, so you can refer to the date, amount, and explanation you are asking about. If SSA or Medicare directs you to a different record or contact, follow that direction; an article cannot determine whether a specific individual’s payment was calculated or billed correctly.

For a missing electronic deposit, SSA says it will review the case and replace the payment if it is due. That does not mean every report results in an immediate replacement: SSA first has to review whether a payment is due, and a bank posting delay may need to be resolved with the financial institution. Keep the notice, payment-history details, and contact information together while the issue is being reviewed.

For a lower payment, ask the agency responsible for the record to explain the specific change. SSA can address questions about Social Security benefit history and overpayment notices; Medicare or CMS may be the appropriate contact for a Medicare bill. A general explanation cannot establish the cause in an individual case, so use the account history and correspondence to guide the conversation.
Payment-date rules, premium arrangements, and overpayment procedures can depend on the individual case and may change. Check current SSA or Medicare instructions rather than relying on an old date, an assumed premium amount, or a deadline that was stated for a different request.
Can you change the date you receive your benefits?
Social Security payment dates are generally set by benefit type and the applicable payment schedule; they are not simply a date a recipient can select. SSA’s payment-date information explains the schedule and exceptions. If the date you expected does not match your actual schedule, verify the applicable date through SSA rather than treating the difference as a missing payment.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I report a missing Social Security payment?
If an electronic payment has not arrived on its scheduled pay date, contact your bank or financial institution first to check for a posting delay. If it cannot resolve the issue, report the late, missing, or stolen payment to SSA at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) or contact a local SSA office. SSA says it will review the case and replace the payment if one is due.
Why is my Social Security payment lower than expected?
Check your current and prior benefit history, SSA and Medicare notices, and any CMS bill. Medicare premiums are usually deducted automatically, though some people receive a separate bill. An overpayment recovery can also reduce the net payment. The record and notice for your case—not the amount alone—are needed to identify the reason.
Can I change the date I receive my benefits?
Payment dates generally follow SSA’s schedule based on benefit type and, for many recipients, birthday. They are not simply a date a recipient can choose. Check the current schedule and your my Social Security account to confirm the date that applies.
What should I do if SSA says I was overpaid?
Read the notice and choose the response that fits: appeal if you dispute that an overpayment occurred or its amount; request a waiver if repayment would be unaffordable or unfair; or request a lower recovery rate if the proposed withholding is unaffordable. Follow the notice and current SSA instructions for the applicable requirements and deadlines.
