If your paycheck shrank after a raise, compare the gross pay and each withholding or deduction line on pay statements for matching pay periods. A higher gross wage can be offset by a change in tax withholding, benefits, or another deduction; if gross pay itself is wrong, ask payroll to verify the raise’s effective date, rate, hours, and any missing wages.
Compare the pay statements from gross pay to net pay
Use statements covering the same length pay period, if possible. Compare the dates and work period, then follow each amount from gross wages through deductions to the net deposit. A deposit by itself cannot show whether the change came from pay earned, withholding, or deductions.

- Gross pay and rate: Check whether the new rate was applied, when it took effect, and whether the statement covers a full period at that rate. Confirm hours, salary amount, overtime, commission, or bonus against what you expected.
- Tax lines: Compare federal income-tax withholding, state and local withholding, and Social Security and Medicare. The federal tax guidance below explains federal income-tax withholding; it does not establish why a state or local line changed.
- Benefits and other deductions: Look for changes to health insurance, retirement contributions, flexible spending, garnishments, or other deductions. Ask what changed and whether it is temporary or recurring.
- Net pay: Reconcile the deposit only after checking all the lines above. Net pay is gross pay minus withholding and deductions.
Federal law requires covered employers to keep records of wages, additions and deductions, pay periods, and pay dates, although the FLSA does not generally require employers to provide pay stubs. State rules may differ. See the U.S. Department of Labor’s recordkeeping guidance and FLSA FAQ.

Ask payroll to confirm the effective date, rate, hours or salary amount used, and whether all wages for the new rate were included. A raise may not appear for a full pay period if its effective date fell partway through the period; ask payroll to explain the calculation rather than assuming an error. If wages were missed, request a correction and the expected payment date.

If gross pay rose but the deposit fell
Identify which withholding or deduction line increased before deciding what happened. The raise alone does not reveal the reason: federal income-tax withholding depends on earnings and the information on Form W-4, while benefits and other deductions can also change. Check whether the increase is a one-time item or a recurring change, and ask payroll to explain any unfamiliar line.

Federal income-tax withholding and your W-4
Your Form W-4 tells your employer information used to calculate federal income-tax withholding, including filing status, multiple-job adjustments, credits, other income, deductions, and any additional withholding. The IRS explains Form W-4 and withholding. Withholding is money paid toward your tax bill during the year; it is not by itself a statement of your final tax liability.

A raise in regular wages is not automatically a bonus. However, the IRS defines supplemental wages to include items such as bonuses, commissions, overtime, and retroactive pay increases, and describes different federal withholding methods for them in Publication 15 (2026), Employer’s Tax Guide. Under that publication, when the applicable conditions are met, employers may use a flat 22% federal withholding method for certain separately identified supplemental wages of $1 million or less. That is a withholding method—not necessarily your final tax rate. Ask how a bonus, commission, or retroactive payment was recorded if it appears to have been treated differently from regular wages.

Estimate before changing withholding
Use the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator to check whether your withholding appears appropriate for your overall situation. If you decide a change is warranted, submit a new Form W-4 to your employer. The IRS says an employer generally must put a revised form into effect no later than the start of the first payroll period ending on or after 30 days from receiving it.
Reducing withholding can raise the amount deposited now while leaving less paid toward the eventual tax bill. Do not change your W-4 simply to make the next deposit larger. The IRS’s Publication 505 (2026), Tax Withholding and Estimated Tax describes particular circumstances that can require a new W-4; a raise alone should not be assumed to trigger that requirement. Tax-year guidance can change, so consult the current IRS publications for your situation.

Keep the request factual. If payroll identifies a changed benefit or other deduction, ask when it changed and whether it will continue on future checks.
Where to go if the pay still appears wrong
First establish whether you received the agreed rate and the wages you earned. An unexplained difference is not, by itself, proof that the law was violated. The right agency and remedy depend on the pay issue, your location, and the facts.
Quick Recap
- Promised wages above federal minimum-wage and overtime requirements: The U.S. Department of Labor says the FLSA does not provide a collection procedure for usual or promised wages above those federal requirements; some states do provide claim procedures. Contact your state labor agency about a state-law wage-payment issue. See the DOL’s worker complaint FAQ and Handy Reference Guide to the FLSA.
- Possible federal minimum-wage or overtime violation: Contact the U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division. The FLSA’s protections cover federal minimum wage, overtime, and recordkeeping; state law may provide additional protections.
- Employer-benefit deductions: Under the FLSA, deductions for items such as tools or uniforms cannot reduce a covered worker’s wages below the applicable federal minimum wage or overtime due. State law may offer further protections; consult the DOL’s FLSA reference guide.
