If your Isle of Man Steam Packet ferry is delayed or cancelled, check the operator’s Latest Sailings page and the texts or emails sent with your booking, then contact Steam Packet to confirm your options. Ask whether you can take the next available sailing or get a refund, and check before paying for replacement travel or accommodation. Refunds, care while waiting and compensation for a late arrival have different eligibility rules.
What to do first
- Check the sailing status. Use the Latest Sailings page and check the contact details on your booking. Steam Packet says it sends updates by text and/or email, and provides revised estimated times as they become available. It says passengers should be informed of a cancellation or departure delay as soon as possible, and no later than 30 minutes after the scheduled departure. A weather forecast alone does not confirm a cancellation: the operator says it may make decisions close to departure to account for current conditions. See its disruption advice.
- Contact Steam Packet about your booking. Ask whether the next available sailing can take you to your destination in time, and whether rebooking or a refund applies to your circumstances. The operator says staff will help passengers rebook onto the next available crossing, on the same or a different day. Its disruption page lists 01624 645745 for reservations and [email protected] for disruption enquiries. The contact page lists [email protected], UK phone 08722 992 992 and Isle of Man phone (01624) 661661. It gives weekday opening hours as 08:30–18:00 and weekend hours as 09:00–18:00; check the live page for current details.
- Tell onward providers promptly. Contact hotels, car-hire firms, event organizers and onward transport providers to ask about changes or missed bookings. Steam Packet says it will try to advise about alternatives if disruption causes a missed connection, but it is not responsible for additional onward transport costs. Check your travel insurance terms for cover for ferry disruption, accommodation and extra transport.
- Keep evidence and receipts. Save your booking confirmation, disruption messages, revised sailing times, receipts and correspondence. These can help when requesting a refund, making a compensation claim or complaining.
Should you rebook or ask for a refund?
Compare the earliest realistic arrival under each option, whether a replacement sailing works with your onward plans, the amount and timing of any refund, and likely extra costs. Ask Steam Packet which option applies to your ticket before buying replacement transport.
When the sailing is cancelled
Steam Packet says a passenger booked on a cancelled sailing is entitled to a full refund. It also says staff will help passengers rebook onto the next available crossing. Ask the operator which option applies to your booking and what sailing is available.
When a departure delay is more than 90 minutes
Steam Packet says that if a cancellation or departure delay exceeds 90 minutes and voids the reason for travel—giving a day trip as an example—the unused portion of the ticket can be fully refunded within 28 days on application. Where appropriate, it says it will provide a return service to the first point of departure. These are the operator’s published terms; confirm how they apply to your journey.

For services covered by passenger-rights rules, GOV.UK’s passenger-rights guidance says that if a cancellation occurs or a departure delay exceeding 90 minutes is expected, passengers can choose between rerouting to their final destination at no extra cost under comparable conditions at the earliest opportunity, or reimbursement of the ticket price plus a free return to the first point of departure. The passenger-facing GOV.UK journey guide says refunds should be made within seven days using the original payment method. Coverage has conditions and exceptions, so do not assume every booking or circumstance qualifies.
What help is available while you wait?
Refreshments
Steam Packet says it provides snacks, meals or refreshments free when facilities are reasonably available if departure is delayed by more than 90 minutes. The GOV.UK journey guide describes light refreshments at 90 minutes, a snack or light meal at four hours, and a hot meal at eight hours, restarting the sequence for each further four-hour period. It also says refreshments need not be provided when facilities are unavailable. Ask staff what is available at your port or onboard.

Accommodation
Steam Packet says that when disruption not caused by weather or extraordinary circumstances requires an additional night, it will offer adequate accommodation free. Its published limit is €80 per passenger per night, excluding transport, for up to three nights, or the sterling equivalent.
GOV.UK publishes a different limit: its passenger-rights guidance describes adequate accommodation and transport to and from it, subject to a maximum of £70 per person per night for up to three nights. The government guidance says this assistance does not apply when weather conditions endanger safe ship operation. Because the operator and government pages state different limits and describe the details differently, ask Steam Packet what it will arrange and confirm which passenger-rights guidance applies before incurring accommodation costs.

Can you claim compensation if your ferry arrives late?
Arrival-delay compensation is separate from a refund for a cancelled or unusable trip. Steam Packet says compensation must be requested and may be available based on how late you arrive and the scheduled journey duration:

The operator’s published compensation terms cover the first two duration bands; the additional bands are stated in GOV.UK’s fuller guidance. These figures are thresholds, not guarantees of payment. Steam Packet says its listed compensation does not apply when a delay is caused by weather or extraordinary circumstances, and excludes stand-by passengers and open tickets without a reserved departure time from its listed assistance and compensation. GOV.UK also lists exclusions, including unsafe weather, extraordinary circumstances, open tickets other than season tickets, advance notice before ticket purchase and passenger fault. Check the current rules and your eligibility before making a claim.

How to complain if the response does not resolve the issue
First contact Steam Packet with your booking details, a clear account of what happened and the outcome you are seeking. The operator accepts service feedback by email and through onboard feedback forms; its disruption page lists [email protected] for feedback. GOV.UK says complaints should first be sent to the carrier within two months of the date the service was, or should have been, performed. Keep copies of the complaint and the operator’s response.
