If your credit card was stolen from your car, contact the card issuer immediately through its app or official phone number. Ask it to block the card, check for transactions you did not make, and explain how your replacement will be delivered. Then document the report and dispute any unauthorized charges promptly. These steps reflect U.S. guidance from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC); rules and procedures can differ in other countries.
What do I do if my credit card was stolen from my car?
Treat the missing card as an account-security issue first. The FTC says not to wait to report a lost or stolen card. Use the issuer’s app or find its official number on a statement or the issuer’s website. Do not rely on contact details from an unexpected call, text, email, or social-media message. The FTC’s lost-card guidance recommends reporting promptly and asking the issuer how to obtain a replacement.

- Report the card stolen. In the issuer’s app, look for a lost- or stolen-card option, or call the official number. Ask the issuer to block the card and confirm whether it will issue a replacement and how it will be delivered.
- Check for activity. Ask whether transactions are pending or posted, then review recent account activity yourself. Report any charge you did not authorize right away.
- Record what happened. Note when you discovered the card missing, when you contacted the issuer, and what the issuer told you. Keep the confirmation or case number if one is provided.
- Follow up in writing. The FTC recommends sending written notice promptly and keeping a copy. Its guidance says to include the account number, the date and time you discovered the loss, and the date you first reported it.
- Report the vehicle break-in separately. Contact local law enforcement and ask how to obtain an incident or case number if you need documentation for your records or an insurance claim. Procedures vary by location; a police report is not established as a universal requirement for reporting a stolen card.
Keep using the issuer’s official channels while the replacement is being arranged. A replacement card does not settle a dispute about charges already made, so handle any unauthorized activity through the issuer’s dispute process as well.

After the first call or app report, write down the date and time you discovered the card was missing and the date and time you reported it. Include the channel you used and the response you received. This timeline helps you keep track of later questions about when a charge occurred relative to when you notified the issuer. If you send a letter, keep a copy; the FTC recommends including the account number, when you discovered the loss, and when you first reported it.
What should I do if someone uses my stolen credit card?
Tell the issuer as soon as you see a charge you did not make, including a pending transaction if the issuer allows you to report it. Ask what action it will take and how to submit a formal billing dispute. Keep checking account activity and statements: a transaction may appear after your first review.
For the Fair Credit Billing Act billing-error process described by the FTC, written notice should reach the issuer within 60 days after it sent the first statement containing the error. Follow the issuer’s instructions, send the notice to the billing-inquiries address when required, and keep a copy of your letter and any delivery confirmation. The 60-day period is tied to the first statement containing the charge, not the date you discovered the car break-in. See the FTC’s credit-card dispute guidance for the billing-error process.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Identify each charge you dispute and why you did not authorize it.
- Include the account information the issuer requests, but avoid sending sensitive details through an unverified channel.
- Save statements, correspondence, submission confirmations, and notes from calls.
- Continue monitoring the account while the issuer handles the dispute.
Do not assume that one review immediately after the theft will catch every transaction. Look at both pending and posted activity, and revisit the account and statements as new items appear. If you find another unfamiliar charge, contact the issuer about that charge too. Make a note of each amount and transaction date as displayed, and keep the statement containing it. Those details can help you explain exactly which items you are disputing.
A phone call or app report is important for promptly alerting the issuer, but it may not replace the written billing-dispute notice for the formal process. Ask the issuer how to submit the dispute and where written notices must be sent. The FTC’s 60-day timeline is measured from when the first statement containing the error was sent; keep that date in view even if you reported the card stolen earlier. Retain copies of your notice and any delivery confirmation rather than relying only on a record of a phone conversation.

How much can you owe for unauthorized credit-card charges?
Under the FTC’s U.S. guidance, if you report the card before an unauthorized charge is made, you are not responsible for charges made after you report it. If someone uses the card before you notify the issuer, your maximum potential liability for unauthorized credit-card use is $50. The $50 is a legal ceiling on possible liability, not a statement that every issuer will charge you that amount. The safest course is still to report the loss immediately. The FTC explains the lost- and stolen-card liability rules.
These figures concern credit cards and are U.S.-specific. Do not assume the same rules apply to a debit card, a card issued outside the United States, or a different type of account; check the relevant issuer and local rules.
The practical point is that timing matters: report the theft as soon as you know the card is gone, even if you have not yet spotted a charge. If you do find a charge, report it promptly rather than waiting for the next statement or for the replacement card to arrive. Keep your report time and the transaction details together in your incident record so you can give the issuer a clear timeline.
Should you freeze your credit after a card is stolen?
A stolen card by itself does not prove that someone has your Social Security number or other information needed to open accounts in your name. Consider additional identity-protection steps if other personal information may have been exposed, you find signs of identity theft, or you want to make it harder for someone to apply for new credit using your identity.
If you suspect identity theft, report it at IdentityTheft.gov. The FTC says the site provides a personalized recovery plan. You can also consider a credit freeze or a fraud alert; they serve different purposes.

| Tool | What it does | How to place it | Effect when applying for credit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Credit freeze | Restricts prospective creditors’ access to your credit report, which can help hinder new-account fraud. It is free and remains in place until you lift it. | Contact Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion separately. | You must lift the freeze so a lender can review your report. |
| Fraud alert | Signals businesses to take extra steps to verify your identity before granting new credit. An initial fraud alert is free. | Contact one of the three nationwide credit bureaus; that bureau notifies the others. | It requests additional identity verification rather than restricting report access. |
The FTC describes both options in its credit-freeze and fraud-alert guidance. Neither one blocks charges on the existing card account or replaces notifying the issuer and monitoring that account.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →A freeze and a fraud alert are not interchangeable. A freeze limits prospective creditors’ access to your report and has to be lifted for a lender to review it. You place a freeze separately with all three nationwide credit bureaus. A fraud alert instead asks businesses to take extra steps to verify your identity before granting new credit; contacting one bureau to place an initial alert is enough, because that bureau notifies the other two. Both options are free under the FTC’s guidance.
Choose based on the concern. If you are worried someone may use personal information to apply for new accounts, a freeze can make that harder, while an alert asks creditors to verify identity. If you apply for credit while a freeze is active, plan to lift it so a lender can access your report. Neither choice blocks transactions on the stolen card account, so keep monitoring that account and work directly with its issuer.
If identity theft is suspected, IdentityTheft.gov is a place to report it and receive a recovery plan tailored to the situation. A stolen card alone does not establish that other identity information was taken, so a freeze is an option to consider when the circumstances justify it, not an automatic requirement after every vehicle break-in.
Does insurance cover a credit card stolen from a car?
Ask your homeowners’ or renters’ insurer whether your policy covers card theft or related losses. Coverage depends on the policy, so check its terms rather than assuming a stolen card or unauthorized charge will be reimbursed through insurance. The FTC recommends checking with the insurer, but the card issuer remains the first contact for blocking the card and reporting unauthorized transactions.

If you contact the insurer, explain what was taken and ask what documentation it needs. A local police incident or case number may be useful for your records or an insurance inquiry, but procedures vary and a police report is not established as a universal requirement for a stolen-card report. Do not delay contacting the card issuer while you determine whether your policy applies.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you buy credit-card loss-protection insurance?
No. The FTC warns that pitches to buy paid credit-card loss-protection insurance are scams. Federal law already limits liability for unauthorized credit-card use, so do not pay an unsolicited caller, texter, or email sender for supposed protection. If a message claims to represent your issuer, contact the issuer using its app or an official number you locate independently.
The FTC notes that such pitches may arrive by phone, text, email, or social-media message and try to make it sound as though you need to buy protection. You do not need to purchase a separate paid loss-protection policy to report the stolen card or invoke the U.S. credit-card liability rules described above. Be especially cautious if a message pressures you to respond or asks you to use contact information it supplies. Verify any account question through the issuer’s official app, statement, or website.
What to keep in your incident record
A simple written record can help you track the issuer’s response, explain the timeline, and support a billing dispute or insurance inquiry. Keep it securely with copies of relevant communications.
- The date and approximate time you noticed the card was gone.
- The date and time you reported it, the channel used, and the issuer’s confirmation or case number.
- Any unauthorized transactions, including the dates and amounts shown in the account.
- Copies of written notices, statements, and delivery confirmations.
- A police incident or case number, if local law enforcement provides one.
Also note what the issuer told you about blocking the card, replacement delivery, and how to dispute charges. Keep copies of letters and statements, not just a brief summary of them. This record can make it easier to answer follow-up questions and to track the separate deadlines and steps for reporting the loss and disputing a billing error.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I call the police if my credit card was stolen from my car?
Contact local law enforcement about the vehicle break-in and ask how to get an incident or case number if you need one for your records or an insurance inquiry. Procedures vary by location, and a police report is not established as a universal requirement for reporting a stolen card. Contact your card issuer right away rather than waiting for a police report.
What if I discover an unauthorized charge after I already reported the card stolen?
Contact the issuer as soon as you see the charge and ask how to submit a formal billing dispute. Continue checking account activity and statements because more transactions may appear. For the FTC-described Fair Credit Billing Act process, written notice should reach the issuer within 60 days after it sent the first statement containing the error.
Do I need a credit freeze just because my card was stolen?
No. A stolen card alone does not show that other identity information was exposed. Consider a freeze if identity theft is suspected, other personal information may have been taken, or you want to hinder new credit accounts. A freeze does not block charges on the existing card account.

Report the stolen card to the issuer immediately through its app or official number, ask it to block the card, and check for unauthorized activity.
