Re:

What to Do If Your Broadband Price, Service or Support Changes After a Takeover

A takeover announcement does not automatically alter your broadband deal. Check the written notice and contract, then use the right steps to challenge a price, service or support change.

A takeover announcement does not automatically change your broadband contract. For TalkTalk customers, Ofcom’s advice published on 5 October 2026 says customers remain with TalkTalk and should see no change to price, contract, billing access or normal service at this point. If anything changes in future, Ofcom says BT will contact affected customers with clear notice and support. That advice is specific to TalkTalk; check any notice you receive rather than assuming every takeover has the same outcome.

Do you need to do anything after a broadband takeover?

Not just because ownership has changed. Ofcom’s advice for TalkTalk customers following the BT acquisition announcement, published 5 October 2026, says: “If you are a TalkTalk customer, you remain a TalkTalk customer and you don’t need to do anything differently.” Ofcom says price, contract, billing access and ordinary service are unchanged at that point.

This is a statement about TalkTalk’s announced takeover and the position described on that date—not a guarantee that terms can never change. If your provider later sends a notice, assess the specific change and its effective date.

First, identify what has actually changed

Separate an ownership announcement from a change that affects your account. Check whether you have received only news about the takeover, or a specific communication about your service.

  • Our Cybersecurity Commitment - TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement
  • More Gigabit Ports - Each Deco X55 has 3 Gigabit Ethernet ports(6 in total for a 2-pack) and supports Wired Ethernet Backhaul for better speeds. Any of them can work as a Wi-Fi Router
  • Ownership only: no contract change follows automatically from the announcement.
  • Name, billing contact or payment details: check the message against your account and ask the provider to confirm any administrative change in writing.
  • Price or contract terms: compare the notice with your contract and contract summary, including the effective date and any exit right.
  • Connection or support: record what is failing, when it started and what remedy you want; a change in service experience is not the same thing as a documented contract change.

Keep the takeover announcement, any email or letter, your latest bill, contract summary and original contract terms. Ask the provider to explain in writing what is changing, when, the contractual basis for it and whether you can leave without an exit fee.

Can the new owner change your broadband contract?

For residential and small-business customers covered by its guidance, Ofcom says a detrimental change to contract terms generally requires at least one month’s notice and a right to exit without penalty. Exceptions apply where the change is exclusively for your benefit, purely administrative with no negative effect, or directly imposed by law. Read the notice itself: a takeover alone is not proof that your contract has changed.

Ofcom also says a price increase clearly stated when you agreed to the contract does not, by itself, give you a penalty-free exit right when that increase takes effect. The rules depend on the contract and when it was made; do not assume that all mid-contract increases are prohibited.

What to check if your broadband price rises

Start with the price-rise wording in the contract and when you signed it. Ofcom’s guidance on telecoms price rises distinguishes increases set out in the original deal from a rise beyond what you agreed.

Contracts made from 17 January 2025

For new contracts from 17 January 2025, an included price increase must be stated in pounds and pence and say when it will take effect. Providers cannot specify the increase using an inflation link or percentage under these rules. Check that the bill matches the amount and timing stated in your contract.

Older contracts or a rise beyond the agreed amount

Contracts signed before 17 January 2025 may still contain inflation-linked or percentage increases. If the provider raises the price beyond the amount agreed, or no amount was specified, Ofcom says it must give at least 30 days’ notice and a 30-day window to leave without exit fees. This is distinct from the terms for an increase that was clearly included in the contract.

How to challenge a service or support change

Tell the provider what has changed and what outcome you want—for example, restoration of the agreed service, an explanation of changed support arrangements, or correction of an inaccurate bill. For a connection problem, include dates, symptoms and any relevant account details. For a business contract, check whether it has a service-level agreement covering support and resolution; the consumer guidance may not apply in the same way to businesses with more than ten employees.

Keep copies of messages, bills and contract documents, and note the date of each contact and the complaint reference. Ask for the provider’s position and proposed remedy in writing so you can compare it with the contract.

How to complain if the provider does not resolve it

  1. Complain to the provider first. Describe the change, explain why you think it is wrong and state the remedy you want. Keep the complaint reference and copies of the relevant documents.
  2. Wait for deadlock or six weeks. If the provider sends a deadlock letter, or the complaint remains unresolved six weeks after you first complained, you can take it to the provider’s free alternative dispute resolution (ADR) scheme.
  3. Use the provider’s ADR scheme. The schemes named by Ofcom are CISAS and the Communications Ombudsman. Ask the provider which one it belongs to.

Ofcom accepts consumer reports and may use them to inform its work, but it does not decide individual complaints. See its guidance on complaining about mobile phone or internet services.

Should you switch broadband provider?

You do not need to switch simply because an acquisition has been announced. If the service or terms no longer suit you, compare staying, raising a complaint and switching against the details of your own contract and address.

  • Check the remaining minimum term and whether leaving early could trigger an early termination charge.
  • Compare the total monthly cost now and after any stated price rise, not just an advertised starting price.
  • Check available speed and reliability at your address, as well as support and repair terms.
  • Review the new provider’s full price, contract length and service availability before agreeing.

For broadband and landline customers, Ofcom identifies One Touch Switching: the new provider can arrange the switch. Ofcom’s checklist for a new phone or broadband contract also advises comparing deals and checking contract details. Any early termination charge depends on your current contract.
