If you missed a credit card payment, check your account now, pay what you reasonably can, and contact the issuer using the number on your card or statement. If you cannot afford the minimum, tell the issuer how much you can pay and when you expect income; ask about a temporary arrangement and whether it will waive a late fee. The issuer’s decision and your card agreement determine what happens next—there is no student-specific exemption from ordinary payment terms.
First, identify which situation applies
Open your card app or latest statement and confirm the due date, minimum payment, whether a payment posted, and the issuer’s instructions for making payments. Check the account’s current status as well as the statement: a payment may still be processing, or the amount now due may include a fee. Then use the path that matches what happened:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- The payment is late and still unpaid: Make an affordable payment as soon as possible, then contact the issuer.
- You sent a payment but it is missing: Gather its confirmation details and contact the issuer promptly; if the statement still does not show it, send a written billing-error notice.
- You cannot afford the minimum: Call promptly, explain your finances with specific figures, and ask what temporary options may be available.
Do not assume a payment is on time just because you scheduled or mailed it on the due date. In general, the issuer must receive it by the applicable deadline. Check the payment method and cutoff in your statement or issuer instructions.

Pay what you can
If you can afford the minimum, pay it as soon as possible using a method accepted by the issuer. Your statement identifies the minimum and due date. Paying more than the minimum can reduce interest costs and help you repay the balance sooner, but do not promise money you need for essentials or cannot reliably pay.

A missed minimum may lead to a late fee, breach of the card agreement, changes to interest-rate terms or an introductory APR, and harm to your credit history. The exact fee and account consequences depend on your agreement and issuer; there is no universal late-fee amount that applies to every card. Check the statement and agreement for terms that apply to your account, and ask the issuer to explain any fee or rate change rather than assuming one outcome.
Call the issuer and ask for specific information
Call the number on your card or statement. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) advises consumers who cannot pay to contact the card company immediately. Explain why you missed the payment, how much you can afford now, and when you expect normal payments to resume. Ask:
- What amount is due now, including any fees?
- Can the issuer consider waiving the late fee?
- Is a temporary payment arrangement available, and what would it require?
- Will the missed payment affect the interest rate or an introductory APR?
- What will happen to the account while an arrangement is in place?
Ask the representative to explain any arrangement’s amount, duration, due dates, and effect on the account. Keep a note of the date, the person or department you spoke with, and what was agreed. If you are offered a temporary amount, compare it with what you can realistically pay; a plan you cannot keep may not help. An issuer may work with a customer facing a financial emergency, but it is not required to grant a particular arrangement or fee waiver.

If you cannot afford the minimum
Call even if you cannot make a payment today. Give the issuer concrete numbers rather than a general promise: how much you can pay now, when your next income is expected, and what amount you could realistically pay temporarily. Tell them when you think regular payments might resume. The CFPB’s guidance is to explain the reason you cannot pay, the amount you can afford, and the likely timing for normal payments to restart.

It can help to have your statement and a realistic budget in front of you before the call. Be clear about what is available now versus what you expect later, and do not describe uncertain income as guaranteed. Ask what amount is due immediately and whether the issuer can offer a temporary arrangement. The issuer’s answer and your account agreement control; an arrangement is not automatic, and you should not assume it pauses interest, fees, or other account consequences unless the issuer confirms that.
Do not agree to a payment plan that you already know you cannot meet. Before accepting an offer, clarify what you must pay and when, whether interest or fees continue, and what happens if you miss a payment under the arrangement. Your issuer and account agreement control the specific terms.

Ask whether the organization charges a fee, how much it costs, and exactly what services it provides before enrolling. Be cautious with debt-relief businesses that guarantee results, tell you to stop communicating with your card issuer, or tell you to stop making minimum payments; the CFPB identifies those as warning signs, not proof that every debt-relief service is fraudulent. See the CFPB’s guidance on what to do if you can’t pay your credit card bills.
When is a credit card payment considered late?
CFPB guidance says a payment is generally timely if the issuer receives it by 5 p.m. on the due date, using the time zone stated on your billing statement. If the due date falls on a Sunday or holiday, the next business day generally applies. Check the statement and the issuer’s instructions because an issuer may set a reasonable cutoff for online payments. A payment initiated or mailed on the due date may arrive too late to count as timely.
Receipt matters, so leave time for the payment method you choose and use the issuer’s stated instructions. If you are uncertain whether a payment reached the issuer by the deadline, ask the issuer to check the account and explain the applicable cutoff. These are general CFPB timing guidelines; confirm the instructions for your specific account rather than assuming that every payment method works the same way.

If the deadline has just passed, still pay as soon as you can and call. You can ask whether the issuer will consider waiving a late fee: the CFPB says, “If your payment was received late, you can contact your card company and ask if they’d consider waiving the late fee.” That is a request, not a guaranteed right. Ask whether a fee has actually been assessed and what amount is due, since late-fee amounts and account terms can vary.
If you paid but the payment is missing
Contact the issuer and gather proof
Call promptly and provide the payment date, amount, method, and confirmation number. Keep the confirmation and any other records showing when and how you paid. Ask the issuer to locate the payment and explain what it needs to correct the account. If the payment came from another account or service, retain the available transaction details there too, so you can give the issuer a clear record of what you initiated.
Send written notice if the statement still omits the payment
If the statement that should have reflected the payment does not show it, the CFPB says to send written notice of the billing error within 60 days of receiving that statement to protect your rights. Use the billing-error address provided by the issuer—not necessarily the payment address—and keep a copy of the letter and proof of delivery. Continue paying undisputed amounts as required while the issuer investigates. The CFPB explains the process in its guidance on a payment missing from a credit card statement.
Do not wait for a phone conversation to substitute for the written notice described by the CFPB. If you are unsure which address to use, check the statement or ask the issuer for its billing-error address. Keep a copy of your notice and related confirmations together, and note when you sent them. The 60-day period runs from receiving the statement that should have shown the payment.
What could happen to your credit and account?
A late payment can affect credit history, but there is no reliable way to state a specific credit-score drop for an individual student. A CFPB rulemaking document describes possible score effects after delinquency is reported at roughly 30 days. That is a general possible timeline, not a promise that every issuer reports on a particular day or that every person’s score will change by a particular amount. Do not treat one missed due date as a forecast of a specific score result.

As an account becomes more delinquent, possible consequences described by the CFPB include repricing in circumstances permitted by law, a reduced credit limit, card suspension, collection activity, and eventual charge-off. These are possible outcomes, not a fixed sequence that every issuer follows. Check later statements and your credit reports for accuracy. If information is wrong, use the relevant dispute process rather than assuming that every reported late payment is correct.
Whether and when an issuer reports depends on account facts and practices; the approximate 30-day reference is not a safe period to wait before acting. Contact the issuer promptly, keep records of its responses and your payments, and review later account information. If you find an error, follow the appropriate dispute process and retain supporting documents.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check your own account terms
Rules and remedies can depend on the card agreement, issuer, payment method, and account facts. Use the agreement, statement, or issuer app to check the terms that apply to you. The CFPB maintains a credit-card agreement database, but a database entry may not be the agreement for your specific account. The CFPB says the issuer must provide your agreement on request, so contact the issuer for account-specific questions.
The guidance here is for cardholders in the United States. Being a student does not by itself establish a special grace period or exemption from credit reporting; verify your own account’s terms and status with the issuer. The CFPB’s general guidance can help you decide what to ask, but your own issuer and agreement determine the specific fee, payment arrangement, rate terms, and account status.

When is my credit card payment considered late?
CFPB guidance says payment is generally timely when received by 5 p.m. on the due date in the time zone stated on your bill. A Sunday or holiday due date generally moves to the next business day. Check your statement and issuer instructions for the applicable payment cutoff.
What should I do if my payment does not show on my credit card statement?
Contact the issuer promptly with the payment date, amount, method, and confirmation number. If the statement that should have reflected it still omits it, send written billing-error notice to the issuer’s billing-error address within 60 days of receiving that statement. Keep copies and continue paying undisputed amounts as required.
Can I ask my card company to waive a late fee?
Yes. The CFPB says you can contact the card company and ask whether it would consider waiving a fee when your payment was received late. It is a request, not a guarantee; the issuer decides whether to waive it.
The Bottom Line
Act promptly: confirm what happened, pay what you reasonably can, and contact the issuer with specific information. If you cannot afford the minimum, ask about a realistic temporary arrangement; if a payment is missing, document it and send written notice within the applicable 60-day period. Keep records, verify account-specific terms with your issuer, and do not assume a fee waiver or particular credit-score outcome.
