Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf you missed a household bill payment, confirm the account status and contact the biller promptly. Ask what you owe, what consequences may apply, and whether it can offer a fee waiver or a payment arrangement you can realistically keep. The right next step depends on the bill, your agreement, the creditor’s policy, and—for some consequences—your state’s rules. This guide is for U.S. consumers.
What to do first after missing a payment
- Confirm the facts. Check the biller’s official website, latest statement, or known phone number for the amount due, due date, payment status, fees, and any notices. If you already paid, keep the proof of payment and ask the biller to trace it.
- Contact the biller as soon as you can. Briefly explain what happened and when you expect to pay. Ask whether it can waive or reduce a late fee, provide a hardship option, or set up an arrangement. The FTC recommends contacting creditors to work out a manageable plan when you are behind on bills (FTC guidance on handling debt).
- Check the terms before agreeing. Ask how much you must pay and when, whether you must keep new bills current while catching up, whether the plan affects credit reporting or service, and what happens if you miss a plan payment. Agree only to an amount and schedule you can manage; some utility arrangements require both current bills and installments on past-due balances (FTC guidance on utility bills).
- Keep a record. Save messages, statements, payment confirmations, and the written terms. For a phone call, note the date and time, representative’s name, what was agreed, and the next steps. The FTC recommends getting agreements in writing and keeping records of conversations (FTC mortgage guidance; FTC debt guidance).
- Address urgent risks first. If the bill involves housing, utilities, insurance, or a secured car loan, ask directly about shutoff, coverage lapse, repossession, or foreclosure timelines and any protections that apply. Procedures vary, so do not rely on a general timeline.
If you receive a court, eviction, shutoff, repossession, or foreclosure notice, treat the deadline as urgent. Contact the named agency or servicer and seek help from legal aid or a qualified local professional.
What to ask before accepting a payment arrangement
There is no universal catch-up plan. Compare only the options your biller actually offers, and get the final terms in writing. Ask:
- What is the total amount due, including fees and interest?
- How much must I pay now, and what are the amount and dates of later installments?
- Must I pay new bills in full while paying down the past-due balance?
- Will the arrangement change credit reporting, service status, or collection activity?
- What happens if I pay late or cannot make one of the scheduled payments?
What changes by bill type
Credit card
If you cannot pay the full balance, paying at least the minimum may limit some consequences, but interest generally continues on the unpaid balance. Missing the minimum can lead to fees, a higher interest rate, and credit-history damage. Call the issuer using the number on your card or statement and ask what affordable options it offers; keep any agreement in writing (FTC debt guidance; FTC credit-card guidance).

Federal Regulation Z has a narrow payment-crediting protection: an issuer generally must credit a payment as of the date it receives it, subject to reasonable requirements such as a cutoff time or account information. If a material change to the payment address or procedures delays crediting and causes a late fee or finance charge during the specified 60-day period, the regulation bars that charge, subject to details and exceptions. This is not a general grace period for late payments (Regulation Z, 12 CFR § 1026.10).
Utility bill
Contact the utility immediately if you are behind or expect trouble paying. Ask what is required to keep service connected, whether a payment plan is available, and whether it requires you to pay new bills on time as well as installments on arrears. Also ask whether late payments under the arrangement are reported to credit bureaus. Unpaid utility bills may be sent to collections or charged off, and payment history can affect credit (FTC utility guidance).

Use a phone number from a recent bill or the utility’s official website. Scammers may impersonate utilities, threaten immediate shutoff, and demand hard-to-reverse payments such as gift cards, cryptocurrency, payment-app transfers, or wire transfers (FTC warning about utility impostors).
Mortgage
Contact your mortgage servicer or lender promptly; the servicer handling payments may not be the company that originally made the loan. Depending on the facts and state law, missed payments can lead to default and foreclosure procedures, as well as added fees, interest, and credit damage (FTC mortgage guidance).

Before calling, outline what caused the missed payment, your income and expenses, whether the problem is temporary or ongoing, and what payment might be affordable. Ask whether reinstatement—paying the past-due amount by an agreed date—or forbearance—a temporary reduction or pause followed by a catch-up plan—is available. These options may not fix housing costs that are unaffordable long term. Keep correspondence and deadlines organized, and consider a free housing counselor (FTC mortgage guidance).
Car loan
Contact the lender promptly and review your contract for applicable rights and options. The FTC notes that many car-financing contracts allow repossession after default; recovering a repossessed vehicle may require paying the debt balance plus towing and storage costs (FTC guidance on vehicle financing).

Student loan
For a federal student loan, contact your servicer and ask about repayment programs offered by the Department of Education. Options for private loans are generally fewer, so contact the private servicer directly. Be wary of paid relief companies promising forgiveness or lower payments: official applications are free (FTC student-loan guidance).
Debt collector
First verify that the contact is legitimate and review the validation information. If you do not recognize the debt, believe it was paid, or dispute the amount, consider sending a written dispute. CFPB guidance says that if you dispute in writing within 30 days of receiving the validation notice, the collector must provide verification before continuing collection. Keep copies and records; if you paid the debt, send copies of proof rather than originals (CFPB debt-collection guidance).

When to seek outside help
If your budget cannot support the proposed arrangement, do not accept it just to delay a consequence. A reputable nonprofit or other qualified credit counselor may help you assess broader debt. Mortgage borrowers can seek a free housing counselor. Avoid companies that demand large upfront fees or guarantee they can stop foreclosure (FTC mortgage guidance; FTC debt guidance).
