If a fuel discount or points redemption does not appear, first check that the station participates and that your reward is available; then follow that program’s exact pump sequence. If it still fails, pay with another accepted method, keep the receipt, and check the transaction in your account before contacting support. Participation, redemption steps, and limits vary by retailer, so a familiar station brand alone does not guarantee that a particular offer will work.
Start with the station and the exact rewards program
Fuel loyalty rules are retailer- and location-specific. A station may display a familiar brand without participating in every offer or rewards program associated with that brand. Before you troubleshoot the phone or pump, open the program’s app or website and look for its participating-location finder. Exxon Mobil says not all branded stations participate, and Sunoco directs members to the station finder in its app. Check the specific location rather than assuming participation from the sign outside. (Exxon Mobil app FAQs; Sunoco Go Rewards FAQ.)

Confirm that you are checking the same program that issued the reward. A retailer’s own points, a grocery-store fuel offer, a bank-card benefit, and a fleet account can have different eligible stations and redemption instructions. The examples below concern selected US retailer programs; they do not establish rules for programs in other countries or for card-linked and grocery rewards. Use the terms and location finder for the scheme named on your account.

- Search the exact station address or location in the program’s own locator.
- Check that the offer applies to the fuel purchase you are making, rather than a different station, grade, or promotion, if the program lists those conditions.
- If the location is absent or the app shows it as ineligible, ask the station or program support to confirm before relying on the discount.
Check whether the reward is ready to redeem
An account balance is not always the same as an available redemption. Points may be below a program’s minimum, may not yet be available, or may be subject to transaction limits. Open the account’s rewards or activity screen and read the current redemption terms before starting another attempt. Review any displayed expiry date or pending status as well; do not assume a general fuel-rewards rule applies to your program.

The thresholds differ. Exxon Mobil’s FAQ says its app redemption requires at least 100 available points. Chevron Texaco says points below its minimum remain in the account, and its FAQ describes a single-vehicle fuel purchase limit of 25 gallons or the payment-card limit. These are program-specific examples, not industry-wide standards. Check the current terms because retailers can change their rules. (Exxon Mobil Gas Rewards FAQs; Chevron Texaco Rewards FAQs.)
Also verify the account itself. Make sure you are signed in to the account that earned the offer, and check that the app is displaying the right rewards balance or selected offer. If the program permits redemption by phone number or loyalty card, use the credential associated with that account—not a different household member’s or old account’s details.
Use the redemption method in the right order
Rewards programs do not all apply discounts the same way. Depending on the retailer, redemption may require selecting an offer in the app before activating the pump, entering an account phone number at the pump or register, scanning a digital loyalty card, or using a physical card. Follow the prompts for the specific program and location. Starting a fuel transaction before activating an app-based reward may leave no opportunity to apply it to that transaction.

- Read the pump or app prompt before beginning. Look for the program’s stated method: app activation, account phone number or alternate ID, or loyalty card.
- If the program requires app selection, select the reward first. Complete the app’s activation or redemption step before activating the pump, when that is what the retailer instructs.
- At the pump, enter or scan the requested credential. Check the display for confirmation that the account or offer has been recognized before proceeding.
- Do not substitute a payment swipe for a loyalty step. A credit or debit card can pay for fuel without identifying the rewards account. For example, Sunoco says members must use its app to redeem Go Rewards; swiping a credit card at the pump does not redeem the discount.
- Follow the sequence for the transaction type. Some offers distinguish between paying at the pump and paying inside. If you move to the register, ask whether you need to identify the account there as well as at the pump.
When the sequence is unclear, stop and read the on-screen instructions or ask the attendant before authorizing the purchase. Do not assume that a reward can be applied after fueling; whether a transaction can be adjusted later depends on that program’s rules.
Fix common app, location, and QR problems
The app does not recognize the station
Check that the station is listed as participating and that your phone’s location services are enabled if the app uses location recognition. Exxon Mobil specifically recommends checking location services when location recognition fails. If the app still identifies the wrong location, compare the displayed station with the address on the station sign or app listing and ask station staff to confirm the correct site.
The QR code will not scan
Make sure the code is visible and that you are scanning the code for the pump you are using. Exxon Mobil advises trying another pump if its app cannot read a pump QR code. The company also cautions that a persistent problem can reflect a station configuration issue: “If the issue persists, the station could also be experiencing a configuration issue.” That is a possible explanation, not proof of what is wrong with a particular pump. If another pump does not solve it, use another payment method and contact customer service rather than repeatedly attempting a failed scan. (Exxon Mobil app FAQs.)

The pump does not accept the phone number or card
Re-enter the number carefully and check that it is the number linked to the rewards account. If the program offers a digital or physical loyalty card as an alternative, try the supported credential shown in its instructions. A credential can identify an account without proving that the account has an eligible reward, so also verify the balance and minimum redemption requirements.
The app price and pump price appear different
Pause before proceeding if the displayed price does not match what the program says to expect. Confirm that the correct offer was selected, the station participates, and the app is showing the current location. If the discount still does not display, ask the station manager or program support how to proceed. Chevron Texaco directs customers who did not receive the discounted app price to notify the station manager or contact its Consumer Connect Center. Do not assume that the advertised offer has been applied just because the app opened or your account was recognized. (Chevron Texaco Rewards FAQs.)
If the reward still will not apply, finish the purchase and preserve proof
A failed redemption should not leave you stranded at the pump or force you to keep retrying while the transaction is uncertain. If you cannot get the program to recognize the reward, use another accepted payment method to complete the fuel purchase. Exxon Mobil’s guidance for persistent app or QR problems is to use an alternative form of payment and contact customer service. If you are unsure whether a transaction has started or a payment has been authorized, ask the attendant before starting another one.

Keep the receipt, including any pump, price, fuel-volume, and discount details it shows. Before disputing the charge or attempting another redemption, compare the receipt with the rewards app’s transaction history or activity screen. Exxon Mobil provides transaction history and activity details; REBEL says its receipt shows the actual fuel price and discount when one has applied. Receipt formats and account records vary by retailer, so use whatever evidence your program provides. (Exxon Mobil app FAQs; REBEL Fuel Loyalty FAQ.)
When contacting the station or rewards support, include the information needed to find the transaction: the station location, pump number, date and approximate time, payment method, account identifier, and the exact error message if you saw one. State whether you selected the offer in the app or entered a phone number or card, and whether the receipt or account history shows a discount. Do not send a full payment-card number or password in an ordinary support message.

The available sources do not establish a universal right to a retroactive fuel discount or points credit; the retailer must confirm whether it can adjust a completed purchase. Keep the receipt until the retailer has answered and the account record is resolved.

How the pump flow differs by retailer
These official US program examples illustrate why the correct method matters. They are not interchangeable instructions, and current app prompts and terms should take precedence.
| Program | Redemption method described | Eligibility or limit described | Failure or verification detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exxon Mobil Rewards+ | App selection before pump activation is available; the FAQ also describes entering a phone number or scanning a digital card at the pump. | At least 100 available points for app redemption; not all branded locations participate. | For QR failure, try another pump; if unresolved, use another payment method and contact customer service. Its FAQ says points cannot be used with NFC Apple Pay for fuel purchases. (App FAQs; Rewards FAQs.) |
| Sunoco Go Rewards | The FAQ says redemption requires the Sunoco app; swiping a credit card at the pump does not redeem the discount. | Use the app’s station finder to find participating locations; a points minimum or gallon cap is not stated in the cited FAQ. (Sunoco FAQ.) | Check the app’s participating-station information and follow its redemption flow. |
| Chevron Texaco Rewards | The FAQ describes using the account phone number at the pump or register, or using the account in the app, at participating locations. | Points below the minimum remain in the account. A single-vehicle qualifying fuel purchase is limited to 25 gallons or the payment-card limit. | For a missing discounted app price, notify the station manager or contact the Consumer Connect Center. (Rewards FAQs.) |
| 7-Eleven fuel loyalty | The help article says members can use the app or enter their account phone number at the pump. | Current participating locations and offer rules should be checked in the app; a points minimum or gallon cap is not stated in the cited article. (7-Eleven fuel loyalty help.) | Confirm the current station and offer rules in the app. |
| REBEL Rewards | The FAQ says omitting the loyalty alternate ID can result in a non-loyalty transaction; for cash transactions it describes entering the ID at the register and again at the pump. | Current minimums or transaction limits are not stated in the cited FAQ. | The FAQ says the receipt shows the actual price and discount when applied. It is an older PDF, so confirm current instructions with REBEL. (REBEL Fuel Loyalty FAQ.) |
Prevent the same failure on your next fill-up
- Before driving to a station for a specific offer, check the program’s locator for that exact location.
- Open the rewards account before beginning the pump transaction and check that the offer or points are ready to use.
- Read the pump prompt rather than assuming that the payment card, phone number, app, and loyalty card are interchangeable.
- Keep the receipt long enough to verify the final price and the account activity, especially when a discount is important to your budget.
- If a location repeatedly fails to recognize the reward, report the station and pump details to the retailer. A station-side setup problem may require action from the retailer, not a change to your phone or account.
The quickest reliable approach is to confirm participation, confirm the reward is redeemable, and use the program’s required sequence. If those checks do not work, complete the purchase with another payment method and keep enough transaction detail for the retailer to investigate.
