If the checkout price is higher than the price you saw while browsing, pause before paying. Save evidence of both amounts, check whether the item, seller, promotion, delivery details, or added charges changed, then ask the retailer to explain or honor the earlier offer. Whether it must do so depends on the facts and the law where you live; a price change alone does not establish that the store acted unlawfully.
What to do before you pay
- Pause at checkout. Do not submit the order until you understand the new total and decide whether you accept it.
- Save the earlier offer and the checkout amount. Capture the product page, cart, and checkout, including the item or model, seller, time, delivery destination, selected size or variant, quantity, coupon or membership terms, promotion details, and final amount. Keep the order confirmation and seller messages if you have already paid.
- Compare what is actually being charged. Check whether the seller, variant, quantity, delivery location, or delivery method changed. Look for an expired promotion or a discount condition you may not have met. Separate the item price from tax, shipping, handling, and optional add-ons.
- Contact the retailer with a clear request. Send the saved evidence and ask what changed and whether the store will honor the earlier displayed offer. Check its price-match, pricing-error, cancellation, and return policies. The FTC advises consumers to check a seller’s price-matching policy and contact it to request a match; that advice does not guarantee the retailer will agree (FTC online shopping advice).
- If the issue remains unresolved, keep the records and use a local complaint channel. Follow the retailer’s complaint process and consult the consumer-protection agency or advice service for your country or state. An FTC report about in-store scanner errors recommends raising an apparent checkout error promptly and asking the retailer about its policy; that is practical analogy, not an online legal rule (FTC scanner-price report).
Why an online price may change
A checkout difference can have several explanations, and the amount alone does not identify which one applies. A promotion may have ended or required a code, membership, minimum quantity, or particular delivery method. The selected size or variant may differ, or a marketplace may have switched to another seller. Delivery location and shipping method can affect charges, while tax, shipping, handling, and add-ons may appear separately from the item price. The retailer may also have changed the price.
Identify the exact difference before deciding how to respond: was the item price revised, a discount condition unmet, a different seller or variant selected, or a separate charge added? That distinction makes it easier to explain the problem to the seller and assess any remedy.
Does the store have to honor the earlier price?
There is no single answer that applies everywhere. It depends on where you live, what the store represented, the transaction details, and applicable law. Do not assume that seeing a price while browsing automatically locks it in, or that every price change is lawful.

The FTC’s rule on unfair or deceptive fees addresses upfront total-price and final-payment disclosures for covered live-event tickets and short-term lodging. Its FAQ says businesses may use dynamic pricing if the pricing information is not misleading; it does not establish a general retail right to an earlier browsing price (FTC Rule on Unfair or Deceptive Fees FAQ). Whether a particular retail offer was deceptive, and what remedy may be available, depends on the specific representation, transaction, and applicable federal and state law.
United Kingdom
UK government guidance says consumer law does not generally prohibit dynamic pricing. It also warns that a mismatch between an invitation-to-purchase price and the amount actually payable may infringe the law, giving as an example a price changed after an item is placed in the basket and the consumer clicks through to checkout (UK government guidance on dynamic pricing). This is UK guidance, not a rule for other countries.

Google Merchant Center tells participating merchants to keep product prices consistent through checkout (Google Merchant Center price consistency guidance). This is a platform requirement for merchants using the service, not a consumer-law remedy and not proof that a shopper automatically receives the earlier price.

Personalized pricing is a separate possibility, not a diagnosis of an individual checkout change. FTC staff’s 2025 study said its initial findings indicated that personal data such as location and browsing behavior could be used in individualized pricing (FTC staff report on surveillance pricing). That finding does not show why a particular shopper saw a particular amount.
In an August 2026 release, the FTC described a proposed enforcement policy statement and quoted Chairman Andrew Ferguson: “When consumers see a listed price, they expect it to be same price that everyone else sees, not the retailer’s estimate of how much they are willing to pay based on their personal data.” The release said the agency does not have authority to ban personalized pricing in all circumstances and warned that undisclosed use of personal data to set prices may violate laws it enforces. It stated that the comment period ended September 18, 2026; the release alone does not establish the proposal’s later status or make it a final rule (FTC release on proposed personalized-pricing policy).
