Keep the original invoice and all replies. If the NBFC does not resolve the complaint, an RBI Ombudsman complaint may be available—but only if the NBFC and dispute meet the scheme’s requirements.
Check the service and invoice before disputing the rate
There is no single GST rate that applies to every NBFC service. The correct treatment depends on what the NBFC supplied, the transaction and invoice details, and the rules applicable on the transaction date. Official correction and complaint guidance does not establish the right rate for an unspecified NBFC service.
Review the invoice and note:
- The exact service or fee on the disputed line item.
- The invoice number and date, taxable value, stated GST rate, and tax amount.
- The supplier’s GSTIN and, where shown, the place-of-supply details.
Distinguish a possible arithmetic or entry error from a disagreement about how a service or fee is classified. Do not rely on a generic rate chart without checking the specific service and transaction date. Ask the NBFC to identify its classification and the basis for the rate it applied.
Ask the NBFC for an explanation or correction in writing
Use the NBFC’s official customer-support or grievance channel. Include the invoice number and date, the disputed line and rate, why you believe it may be wrong, and any relevant supporting classification information. State the remedy you want: an explanation, a corrected document, and—if a correction changes the amount paid—an appropriate refund or adjustment if warranted. Ask the NBFC to confirm how it will update its GST reporting, and set a reasonable date for a response.
#1 Best Overall
Keep a copy of your request and its complaint reference number. Save the original invoice, payment evidence, any relevant account or loan statement, the NBFC’s replies, and any corrected invoice or adjustment document. Do not withhold a loan payment or another contractual amount solely because the GST line is disputed without first getting advice about the contract and consequences.
What correction document should the NBFC issue?
The supplier should confirm the correction method that applies to the transaction. GSTN’s GSTR-1 guide describes portal processes for amending invoice details and reporting amended credit or debit notes from earlier periods. Its Invoice Management System (IMS) additional FAQ says that, in the scenario it addresses, amending an incorrect invoice in GSTR-1 is advisable because a credit note without a link to the original invoice may not let IMS determine the original invoice’s status.
That portal guidance is not a universal ruling on which document is legally required for every transaction. It informs how a supplier may report a correction; it does not establish the correct GST rate for your service. Ask the NBFC to issue the appropriate corrected invoice or adjustment document and explain how it will handle the original entry.
If you are a business, check GST records and ITC separately
If you are an individual consumer who is not claiming business input tax credit (ITC), you can skip this step. A registered business recipient should check whether the corrected invoice or other relevant record appears in its GST records and assess ITC eligibility separately. A GST amount printed on an invoice does not by itself prove that the recipient can claim it.
GSTN’s IMS FAQ says accepted records become part of the ITC-available section, while rejected records go to the ITC-rejected section. The record’s status and legal eligibility are separate questions: eligibility depends on the transaction, recipient, timing, and applicable GST rules. If the amount matters to a return, ask a qualified tax professional to assess the facts and current law.

First complain to the NBFC through its grievance process. Under the Reserve Bank of India’s Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, a customer may be able to escalate an eligible complaint about deficiency in service if the NBFC is covered and the NBFC does not respond within 30 days, rejects the complaint, or gives an unsatisfactory response. The scheme covers specified categories of NBFCs, not every NBFC, and excludes some matters. Whether a disagreement about a GST rate is maintainable depends on the circumstances; do not assume the Ombudsman will decide the tax classification or grant a particular remedy.
RBI’s Integrated Ombudsman Scheme FAQ states: “Approaching the RBI Ombudsman without first lodging a complaint with the RE or doing so before 30 days after lodging the complaint, if there is no response from the RE, would make the complaint non-maintainable under RB-IOS, 2021.” Check the current FAQ and the NBFC’s coverage before filing, because coverage and procedures can change.
For a covered complaint, RBI says customers can submit it online through the Complaint Management System (CMS), by email to the Centralised Receipt and Processing Centre, or by physical post using the prescribed form. The FAQ explains the process and information to include. Use the current instructions to confirm the correct route and eligibility.
