If Ethereum falls while you are using leverage, act on the account’s live risk information—not on a generic ETH liquidation price. Open the position’s margin or risk panel, check whether it is still open, and note the maintenance requirement, collateral value, liquidation estimate, open orders and any deficit warning. If the position is still open and the platform allows it, reducing exposure or adding eligible collateral can increase the buffer, but neither action guarantees safety and added collateral puts more money at risk. If liquidation has begun, controls may be restricted or the process may be irreversible.
First response: check the account before moving money
A margin call is a warning that your equity cushion has become too small under the platform’s rules. Liquidation is the forced reduction or closure of a leveraged position when the account no longer meets the required maintenance margin or reaches another product-specific trigger. The exact calculation depends on the exchange, account type, collateral, fees, funding, market conditions and jurisdiction.

- Open the account that holds the ETH position. Do not rely on a separate wallet, another exchange or a price displayed by a charting service.
- Record the live risk metric. Depending on the product, this may be called margin level, margin ratio, Margin Health, maintenance-margin utilization or uniMMR. Capture the current value and the stated maintenance requirement.
- Check whether the position is still open. Review positions, fills and open orders. A liquidation can be partial, and an order can remain pending after part of a position closes.
- Review collateral and its valuation. Note which assets are eligible, their current value, haircuts or conversion rates, and whether any transfer is still pending.
- Read alerts and account notices. Look for a margin-call warning, reduce-only status, liquidation notice, deficit flag, trading restriction or changed overnight requirement.
- Pause discretionary orders. Canceling or changing orders may be restricted during liquidation. Avoid opening a new leveraged position until you understand the account status.
Take screenshots or export the statement with timestamps before making changes. Prices, requirements and risk metrics can move while you are investigating.

Reduce the leveraged position
Closing part or all of the position lowers the amount of margin supporting the trade. On a derivatives venue, use the platform’s reduce-only function when available so an order cannot accidentally increase net exposure. Confirm the order size, side, trigger condition and whether it is a market or limit order. A limit order may not fill during a fast decline; a market order may fill at a materially different price.

Add eligible collateral
Depositing or transferring approved collateral can increase equity relative to maintenance requirements. The asset must be accepted by that specific product, credited to the correct subaccount and valued by the platform before it improves the metric. Transfers, confirmations and collateral conversions can take time.
Adding funds is not a rescue guarantee. A further ETH move, a higher maintenance requirement, funding or interest charge, a collateral haircut, fees or a valuation change can consume the new buffer. You are committing more capital to an already losing or unstable trade; only use funds you can afford to lose.
Do not assume a stop order will prevent liquidation
A stop can fail to execute at its trigger price, be canceled by a platform rule, or arrive after the account has already entered liquidation. Check the product’s order and liquidation terms rather than treating a stop as insurance.

If liquidation has already started
Many systems hand control to an automated risk engine once the trigger is reached. Kraken’s official US spot-margin help page states: “The liquidation process is automated. Once initiated it cannot be stopped.” Other venues may impose reduce-only mode, cancel open orders, block trading or reduce positions in stages. Do not send additional funds solely because you hope to cancel an active liquidation; first read the account notice and current status.
During a fast market, the execution price can differ from the displayed liquidation estimate. Reference-index prices, mark prices, order-book liquidity, fees and slippage all affect the result. A liquidation estimate is not a guaranteed fill price.
Audit the account after the event
- Open the daily statement and order history. Identify every liquidation, close, transfer, fee, funding entry and realized-profit-or-loss line.
- List what remains open. A partial liquidation may leave an ETH or other position active. That exposure can continue generating profit or loss and still requires margin.
- Check the current risk metric. Confirm whether the account is back above maintenance requirements or remains restricted.
- Look for a deficit or negative-balance flag. Resolve an active deficit according to the platform’s instructions before attempting to open another position.
- Reconcile collateral. Confirm which assets remain, how they were valued and whether any transfer is pending or rejected.
- Save evidence. Preserve statements, fills, notices, screenshots, timestamps, reference prices and support correspondence if the execution appears wrong.
Do not assume that one closed ETH position means every related position closed. Cross-margin or portfolio-margin accounts can contain several products whose requirements interact.

Why there is no universal ETH liquidation price
Two traders can hold identical ETH quantities and face different liquidation levels because their leverage, entry price, collateral mix, account mode, maintenance schedule, fees, funding and open orders differ. Some products calculate risk from a mark or reference-index price rather than the last traded price. The estimate can change when volatility rises, the maintenance tier changes, collateral is revalued or a fee accrues.
For example, Kraken says its US spot-margin valuation uses CF Benchmarks reference-index prices. That reference can differ from the venue’s displayed price and from the eventual execution price. Coinbase US derivatives calculates a margin ratio as maintenance margin required divided by total equity; an overnight increase in margin rates can raise the requirement even if ETH’s price does not move. These are product rules, not general crypto standards.
Platform examples: read the product and jurisdiction carefully
The following figures illustrate why thresholds must not be transferred from one account to another. They are service-specific descriptions and can change; verify the live terms shown in your account.

Alerts are not necessarily guaranteed. Kraken’s margin-level material says notifications may not be delivered, and its approximate call level can vary with volatility. Treat an alert as a prompt to check the account, not as extra time that the platform promises.

When deciding whether an account’s risk design suits you, compare like with like. A percentage, ratio or number has no meaning without its denominator and trigger rule.
- Risk metric and trigger: Determine exactly what is measured and whether a higher or lower value is dangerous.
- Collateral: Check eligible assets, haircuts, conversion rates, concentration limits and the price source used for valuation.
- Alert reliability: Find out whether alerts are described as guaranteed, best effort or merely displayed in the interface.
- Order handling: Identify whether open orders are canceled, whether the account becomes reduce-only and whether new transfers are credited immediately.
- Liquidation method: Ask whether positions are reduced partially or closed fully, how execution is sourced and what fees apply.
- Jurisdiction and product: Spot margin, perpetual futures, dated futures, portfolio margin and international products can have unrelated rules, even when the brand is the same.
Practical decisions in common scenarios
The warning appears and the position is fully open
Read the maintenance requirement, then decide whether you can responsibly reduce exposure. If you add collateral, calculate how much buffer the platform says the deposit creates and allow for another adverse move. Avoid adding funds merely to preserve a position you would not open today.

Only part of the position was closed
Recalculate the remaining position’s size, liquidation estimate and required margin. Cancel or reduce residual exposure if appropriate. A partial liquidation does not end the risk.
The account is in reduce-only mode
Use only orders that lower exposure, and verify that each fill actually reduces the position. A reduce-only order can expire or remain unfilled; monitor the position rather than assuming submission equals execution.
The account shows a deficit
Stop opening new positions. Review the statement for liquidation fees, losses, funding and any remaining exposure, then follow the venue’s deficit-resolution process. New trades can be blocked until the deficit is cleared.

You think the liquidation price or fill is wrong
Do not delete evidence or rely on a chart screenshot alone. Save the account’s displayed metric, mark or reference price, order IDs, fills, fees, notices, timestamps and relevant terms. Contact the platform through its official support channel with a precise timeline. The available platform guidance does not establish a universal reimbursement or complaints procedure, so the venue’s current terms govern the next step.
Controls to put in place before trading ETH with leverage
- Set a personal exposure limit below the platform’s forced-liquidation boundary rather than treating that boundary as your stop.
- Keep collateral and emergency funds separate so a transfer does not become an automatic decision during a crash.
- Know which prices the venue uses for margin calculations and how funding, interest and overnight schedules change requirements.
- Check notification settings, but continue monitoring because delivery may not be guaranteed.
- Review open orders whenever volatility rises; orders that increase exposure can consume margin unexpectedly.
- Understand whether your account is isolated, cross-margin or portfolio margin, and map every position that shares collateral.
- Practice locating statements, risk metrics and liquidation terms before you need them.
An ETH price drop does not by itself determine what happens next. The decisive facts are the account’s current equity, maintenance requirement, collateral valuation and liquidation state. Use those live figures to reduce risk, document the event and avoid compounding a forced loss with a hurried new trade.
