Your rights depend on the route, operating carrier, size and type of change, notice timing, and whether you still want to travel; a schedule change does not automatically mean you are owed compensation.
What do I do if the airline changes my flight after I book?
- Save the paperwork. Keep your original confirmation, ticket receipt, revised itinerary, booking reference, and the airline’s email, text, or app alert. Take screenshots of the original and new times, airports, connections, and cabin, and note when you were told about the change.
- Compare the entire trip. Check departure and arrival dates and times, airports, connection count and length, operating carrier, and cabin. Consider whether the new itinerary still meets any accessibility needs, and review connected flights and ground arrangements.
- Contact the airline or ticket seller. Ask what alternatives are available and whether the airline treats the change as significant or as a cancellation. If an online travel agency or another agent issued your ticket, contact it too. US DOT guidance tells US consumers who booked through an agent to contact the agent directly about refunds first.
- Choose a remedy only after deciding whether you still want to travel. Compare rerouting options before requesting or accepting a refund. In the UK CAA’s described options, choosing a refund ends the entitlement to rerouting or care; EU cancellation guidance also sets out a choice among reimbursement and rerouting options.
- Get the answer in writing. If the response is unclear, ask the airline or agent to identify the rule and option it is applying. Keep names, dates, and case numbers. If a covered claim is rejected, use the relevant national regulator or dispute channel; the European Commission links to national enforcement bodies.
Am I entitled to a refund?
There is no single worldwide threshold for a flight change. The applicable rules turn on the route and carrier, what changed, how and when you were notified, and how you booked. The US, UK, and EU rules below have different coverage and remedies; check the authority’s criteria against your itinerary rather than assuming that a small time change qualifies.

United States
Under US Department of Transportation (DOT) guidance, a traveler is entitled to a ticket-price refund when an airline significantly changes or delays a flight and the traveler chooses not to travel or accept a credit, voucher, rebooking, or other alternative compensation. DOT’s examples include a departure at least 3 hours earlier or arrival at least 3 hours later for a domestic itinerary; for an international itinerary, the corresponding threshold is 6 hours. Other listed changes include a different origin or destination airport, more connection points, a downgrade, and certain accessibility-related changes for travelers with disabilities. For a qualifying ticket bought directly from an airline, DOT says the refund is automatic if the traveler does not accept the changed flight or an alternative. Its automatic-refund guidance gives a deadline of 7 business days for credit-card payments and 20 calendar days for other payment types. The separate 24-hour cancellation/refund requirement does not apply to online travel agency and other agent bookings; DOT advises consumers to contact the agent directly about a refund first. United Kingdom
For a flight covered by UK passenger-rights legislation, UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) guidance describes three options after cancellation: a refund, rerouting at the earliest opportunity, or rerouting at a later date convenient to the passenger, subject to availability. The CAA warns that committing to one option may prevent changing to another; in particular, choosing a refund means the passenger is not also entitled to rerouting or care under the stated options. Coverage depends on the route and carrier, so a UK connection alone does not establish that a booking is covered. See the CAA’s Consumer travel advice – Summer 2026.
European Union
For cancellations covered by Regulation (EC) No 261/2004, Article 8 provides a choice among reimbursement for the relevant unused journey (and, in specified circumstances, a return flight to the first departure point), rerouting at the earliest opportunity, or rerouting later at the passenger’s convenience subject to available seats. Official EU guidance says cancellation includes abandoning the original schedule for another scheduled flight and bringing departure forward by more than 1 hour. Compensation is separate from the refund or rerouting choice and is conditional. Notice timing, the rerouting offered, distance, and extraordinary circumstances can affect eligibility. A changed schedule by itself is not enough to promise compensation.
How should I compare the new itinerary and the alternatives?
Look at more than the new departure time. These details help identify both the practical impact and which rules may matter:

What if the airline offers to rebook me?
Compare the offered replacement against the full original itinerary and your actual needs. If you still need to travel, ask what other rerouting choices are available before accepting a refund. If you do not want the changed trip, ask whether the change qualifies for a refund under the rules that cover your ticket and how to request it. Do not assume that accepting a replacement, voucher, or credit is equivalent to taking a refund.
