First check the transaction on an explorer for the network it actually used. A transfer that is pending, failed, or confirmed has different next steps: a supported wallet may offer controls for a pending transaction, a failed transfer may leave funds in the source wallet, and a confirmed transfer is generally irreversible. Record the transaction hash, token, amount, addresses, network, and status before contacting a wallet, exchange, bridge, or recipient.
Find the transaction and confirm its status
Start in the wallet, exchange, or bridge that initiated the transfer. Locate the transaction or withdrawal and note its transaction hash (TxID), token, amount, sending and receiving addresses, network, displayed status, and relevant timestamps. Open the transaction using an explorer for that exact network; a wallet or provider status label is not necessarily the same as the chain’s result.
- Check the network shown in the transaction record. Do not assume it is the network you intended to use.
- Look up the transaction hash on that network’s explorer. Check whether it is pending, failed, or confirmed, and verify the destination address and token details shown.
- Check the destination. Determine whether it is a wallet you control, a known person’s wallet, or an address belonging to an exchange or other service. For an exchange deposit, confirm the platform supports that exact token and network.
Do not send a second transfer until you have checked the first transaction’s result and the receiving details.
If the transaction is pending or stuck
A pending label may reflect a network delay or a provider’s confirmation process. The appropriate action depends on whether you sent the transfer from a self-custody wallet or through an exchange.

Self-custody wallet
Check the wallet’s official instructions for that network and transaction. Some wallets offer a speed-up or cancellation option while a transaction is still pending. For example, MetaMask’s guidance says a speed-up resubmits the transaction with a higher fee and a cancellation can only be attempted while the transaction remains pending. The process is wallet- and network-dependent, may cost more, and is not a way to undo a confirmed transfer. MetaMask’s current help describes behavior for certain networks in extension version 13.30+; it notes that the described interface change does not cover Mobile or Portfolio.
Exchange withdrawal or transfer
Use the exchange’s transaction status and official support channel. A pending status can reflect network delays or insufficient confirmations; Coinbase’s troubleshooting guidance and its pending-transaction help describe steps for Coinbase product flows. Those instructions do not establish that an exchange withdrawal can always be canceled after broadcast.

If the transfer failed
A failed transfer is not the same as a delayed one. Follow the error guidance shown by the wallet, bridge, or exchange, then compare the source balance and transaction record. For a failed USDC Bridge transfer, Circle says no USDC moved to the destination network and the funds remain in the source wallet. This guidance applies to USDC Bridge, not every bridge or stablecoin.
- Verify the source-network transaction’s actual result and check the source wallet balance.
- Follow the provider’s displayed error guidance. If the status and balance do not reconcile, contact that provider through its official site or app.
- Do not retry until you have confirmed what happened to the original transaction and rechecked the destination details.
If the transfer succeeded but went to the wrong address
A confirmed on-chain transfer is generally final. Ethereum.org’s FAQ says a transaction sent on Ethereum is irreversible. Circle’s USDC guidance states, “Blockchain transactions can’t be reversed,” and says Circle cannot reverse or retrieve a completed USDC Bridge transfer sent to the wrong address or network. The Circle guidance is specific to USDC and its services; neither an issuer nor a wallet can promise recovery for a confirmed transfer.

If you know who controls the receiving address, ask that person to return the funds in a separate transaction. If the address belongs to an exchange or service, contact its official support with the TxID, asset, amount, and network. The provider may assess the case, but recovery is not guaranteed. OKX’s withdrawal guidance describes its own process and notes that its ability to help with an irreversible on-chain withdrawal is limited; options can depend on communication with the recipient or platform.
If you used the wrong network
Use the transaction record to identify the network that actually processed the transfer. If it completed on that network, the stablecoin may be visible by switching your wallet to that network, provided the wallet supports the token there. Circle’s USDC guidance explains this possibility for USDC. Seeing a similar-looking address on another network does not mean an exchange will credit a deposit sent over an unsupported network.

If the destination was an exchange or service, contact its official support with the TxID, token, amount, and network. Whether it can assess or recover the deposit depends on that provider’s policy and the asset, network, account, and circumstances. For example, OKX describes its own limits for withdrawal errors; its guidance should not be treated as a universal recovery policy.

Circle’s USDC Terms instruct Circle Mint users who believe a transaction was unauthorized or incorrectly carried out to notify Circle as soon as possible. That is provider-specific guidance, not a general chargeback or reversal right. The available remedy depends on the provider, account, jurisdiction, and facts; there is no established universal dispute process or guaranteed remedy for on-chain stablecoin transfers.
Protect your records and avoid recovery scams
- Keep the transaction hash or withdrawal TxID and the explorer link for the exact network.
- Save the token, amount, sending and receiving addresses, network, status, and relevant timestamps.
- For an exchange deposit, confirm the platform supports the exact token and network, then provide the transaction details through its official support channel.
- Navigate to a provider’s official site or app yourself before contacting support. Be wary of unsolicited offers to recover funds.
- Never share a seed phrase or private key. Ethereum.org warns that recovery scams commonly ask for seed phrases and says a legitimate service will not ask for one.
- Do not pay a purported recovery agent or make another transfer until you have checked the transaction state and destination.
Provider instructions can change and apply only to the products they describe. Check the current help page for the specific wallet, exchange, bridge, or issuer involved.
