First identify what the app is blocking: a deposit, a new position, or all activity because of your location. Those are different problems. Read the exact notice, check the contract’s availability for your state and current location, and follow the platform’s support process. Do not try to disguise your location to get around a restriction.
Identify what the app is actually blocking
A failed deposit does not necessarily mean trading is banned in your state. Likewise, a location warning, a close-only setting, and a failed order can have different causes. Start with the app’s wording and any notification explaining what action is restricted.
- Deposit blocked: Check the funding method, settled cash or buying power, and any account-specific instructions.
- New trade blocked: Check whether that contract category is offered in your state and whether you have approval for the relevant product.
- Closing allowed, opening blocked: Look for a close-only or eligibility notice and any required account action.
- Location warning: Check your current physical location as well as the address on file.
- Order will not execute: Check whether the market is open and whether a counterparty is available.

Check location and contract availability
Access can depend on the state where you are physically located, the state on your account, and the type of contract. Robinhood says a location warning may appear if you are physically in a restricted state even when you reside elsewhere, if your state on file does not match your current location, or if you are near a state line. Verify your account address and current location, then follow the app’s support instructions; do not use a VPN or other means to conceal where you are.

There is no reliable, permanent nationwide availability list that applies to every contract. Robinhood’s overview says availability varies by state and contract. As of September 9, 2026, its page says Maryland and Nevada residents cannot trade sports event contracts, and Michigan residents cannot open new sports contracts. These are platform- and contract-specific restrictions, not a statement about all prediction markets or all contract types. Check the live notice for the exact contract before relying on a state list.
Availability can change as legal proceedings develop. The Nevada Gaming Control Board’s timeline records court and enforcement actions through June 2026. Robinhood’s June 2026 SEC filing describes ongoing state litigation, injunctions, and appeals, and notes the possibility of future state-by-state changes. Robinhood’s event-contract overview also says additional state restrictions may apply.

Check whether your account is approved for the product
Approval for an ordinary brokerage account does not automatically establish approval for event contracts or other derivatives. Robinhood identifies separate derivatives approval as a requirement for event-contract access. Its support page also lists account eligibility, employment, compliance review, and app version among possible reasons access may be blocked. Read the notice for the specific requirement rather than assuming the restriction is geographic.
Understand close-only restrictions
Robinhood describes a restriction called “position closing only” (PCO): you may close an existing event-contract position, but cannot open a new one. The distinction lets an account manage an existing position without permitting additional exposure. Robinhood gives an open margin call, an eligibility or compliance review, and a detected change in eligibility as examples of possible triggers. Check your notifications for the reason and any step needed to restore access.

Separate a funding problem from a trading restriction
On Robinhood, instant ACH deposits are not available for event contracts. Its support material defines buying power for new contracts as settled cash available to trade. A deposit can therefore fail to provide funds for an event-contract purchase even when the contract itself is available in your state. Check the app’s settled-cash figure and funding instructions.
A funding balance also does not guarantee an order can be placed or closed: Robinhood lists market closure and the absence of an available counterparty as possible reasons an order may not work. Other apps may use different funding rules, order mechanics, or terminology, so consult the platform’s own help information.

Work through the checks in order
- Read the exact error or notification. Note whether it refers to location, eligibility, a deposit method, settled funds, or the contract itself.
- Confirm the contract category. Check availability for that specific category and your state in the app’s current notice or official support information.
- Verify location and account details. Confirm your physical location and the address on file. If they are correct but the warning remains, contact platform support rather than trying to bypass geolocation.
- Review account requirements. Check for a separate derivatives approval, account review, margin call, or requested compliance step.
- Check funds and order conditions. Review settled buying power, permitted funding methods, market hours, and whether an order can be matched.
- Update the app if directed, then contact support. Provide the exact message, contract category, and relevant account details through the platform’s official channel. Ask whether the issue is state availability, location verification, account eligibility, or funding.
What to compare if you use another app
Do not assume another platform permits the same contract just because it offers prediction markets generally. Compare the same contract category and verify each item directly in that platform’s current terms and state-specific notices.

- Whether you can close an existing position when opening new ones is restricted
- How clearly the app explains restrictions and how to reach official support
