Check your current Futures position and open orders, then reconcile the order ID and executed quantity against Kraken’s order-status and fills records. Do not place a replacement order while the cancellation and execution state is uncertain. On markets with Maker Protection, Kraken documents a specific case in which a held aggressive order can still trade after cancellation; that explanation does not automatically apply to every Futures order.
What to do immediately
The priority is to establish whether your account still has a position, not to decide whether the fill “should” have happened. A cancellation request and an execution are separate exchange events, so a cancel acknowledgment alone is not proof that no quantity traded.

- Check the live position. In the Kraken Futures terminal, review the contract, side, size, entry price and unrealized profit or loss under your current positions. If the position is larger or different from what you intended, regard the difference as live market exposure until it is reconciled.
- Check open orders. Confirm whether any remainder is still working. Compare the contract, side, order type and remaining quantity with the order you attempted to cancel.
- Record the identifiers. Save the exchange order ID and, if you used one, the client order ID. Also note the requested size, executed size, contract symbol and side.
- Compare the order record with execution records. A status record can show the final state, while a fills record shows the individual trade or trades. Match the order ID, fill ID, quantity, price and UTC fill time.
- Do not submit a duplicate placement. If the account is already exposed, another order can increase or reverse that exposure. Kraken’s Maker Protection documentation specifically says, “Do not retry the placement after a successful cancel.”
- Preserve the timeline. Keep the time you sent the cancel, the acknowledgment time, every fill time, screenshots and any API or WebSocket messages. Do not rely on a chart or a disappearing order row as your only evidence.
If the position and execution records agree, manage or close the position using your normal risk controls. If they conflict, leave the records intact and escalate the discrepancy to Kraken rather than trying to “correct” it with another trade.

Why a fill can appear after cancellation
Normally, an order can be matched at the same time that a cancellation request is traveling through the exchange. The cancel may be accepted after a matching decision has already been made, even if the user interface displays the cancellation first. The timing shown on your screen is therefore not a complete execution sequence.

Kraken documents an additional, market-specific mechanism called Maker Protection. It applies only to selected derivatives markets. Kraken says every perpetual listed after September 24, 2026 has Maker Protection from launch, while additions to the covered set are announced ahead of maintenance windows. You must verify whether the particular market was covered when your order was submitted; do not assume that all Kraken Futures contracts use it.
In Kraken’s terminology, a protected aggressive order can be held before it is released to the order book. A held order has not entered the public book, and the public API does not expose a separate “held” status. Aggressive orders can therefore show extra latency, and the configured protection interval can change. Use the market’s makerProtectionMillis setting rather than assuming a permanent delay.
How the Maker Protection case works
A held limit order
When a held limit order is canceled on a Maker Protection market, Kraken says it can be released as immediate-or-cancel (IOC). The released order may take available liquidity at that moment, and any unfilled remainder is discarded. This is why a cancellation can be acknowledged while a trade is subsequently reported.
The cancellation response and the held order’s own response are separate messages. Kraken says the order response can arrive about one protection window later. A later fill message is therefore not necessarily evidence that the cancel request was ignored; it may be the release of a previously held order.
A held IOC, FOK or market order
For a held IOC, fill-or-kill (FOK) or market order, a cancel request can return ORDER_NOT_FOUND even though the order still arrives for release. Treat that error as an unresolved state until you check the position and fills. It is not a safe signal to submit a replacement order.

When to wait before canceling
In the Maker Protection scenario described by Kraken, if you want nothing to remain resting and nothing new to trade, Kraken advises waiting out the protection window and then canceling. Its current article describes the window as at most 100 milliseconds, but the setting is market-specific and can change. Confirm the current market configuration before relying on that number or building it into an automated strategy.
What the explanation does not establish
Maker Protection is a documented explanation for a particular held-order workflow, not a blanket explanation for every late-looking fill. A fill after cancellation can also reflect ordinary matching and message-ordering latency. The account’s position and execution records, rather than the visual order history alone, determine what actually happened.

How to verify the result in the web interface
You do not need a Kraken Futures API key to investigate through the web interface. Use the trading terminal and account history available to you, and capture the relevant pages before they change.
Check the position and open orders
- Open the Futures trading view and identify the exact contract and side.
- In the positions panel, record the current size, average entry price and any realized or unrealized result shown for that contract.
- In the open-orders panel, look for the original order or any remaining quantity. A missing row does not by itself tell you whether the order filled, canceled or expired.
- Open the order history or fills view and filter by the contract and approximate time. Capture the order ID, status, executed amount, price and timestamps.
Compare the executed amount with the position change. A partial fill can leave both a position and a canceled remainder, so “canceled” does not necessarily mean zero execution.
Verification methods for programmatic traders
Use more than one event source. The following methods answer different questions and have different retention limits.

Reconcile the REST records
- Query the specific order while it is still within the order-status endpoint’s five-second recent-event window, if possible.
- Record the status, original quantity, filled quantity and any remaining quantity returned for that order.
- Request fills and match every execution by order ID. Record each fill ID, symbol, side, size, price and fill time.
- Sum the execution sizes and compare that total with the order’s filled quantity and the position change. Differences can indicate that a later event or correction has not yet arrived.
- Repeat the check after the protection or messaging delay has passed. Do not infer a final result from a single immediate response.
Reconcile WebSocket events
For WebSocket trading, retain the initial order snapshot and all subsequent deltas in order. Examine the reason field, including partial-fill, full-fill and user-cancel reasons, and correlate each message with the exchange order ID. A cancel acknowledgment should be evaluated alongside the order feed and fills, not in isolation.

If fewer updates arrive than the number requested and an error is returned, one or more orders may not have been canceled. Treat the missing update as an unresolved order, then verify through the order-status and fills records.
Reconcile FIX execution reports
FIX users should retain the order ID, execution ID, cumulative quantity, last quantity, order status and UTC transaction time from each execution report. If Kraken later reports a trade that arrived late, it may send a restated execution report. Keep both the original and restated messages so the final sequence can be demonstrated.
Common scenarios and the correct response
The order says canceled and the position is zero
There may be no remaining exposure, but retain the order and cancel timestamps if the display briefly showed a fill or if an alert fired. A later correction can matter for an audit or support review.
The order says canceled but the position has a nonzero size
Assume the position came from the disputed order until the fills record proves otherwise. Match the order ID and execution sizes, then decide whether to reduce the exposure according to your trading plan. Do not place the original order again merely because its row says canceled.

The order is partially filled
Separate executed quantity from the canceled remainder. For example, if the requested order size was 10 contracts and fills show 4 contracts, the cancellation can have removed the remaining 6 while the 4-contract position remains live. Your reconciliation must use quantities, not only the final status label.
The cancel returns ORDER_NOT_FOUND
On a Maker Protection market, that response can occur for a held IOC, FOK or market order that still reaches release. Check the position and fills after the relevant protection interval; do not interpret the error as confirmation that no trade occurred.
The order disappears from the feed
Removal from an open-order snapshot only means it is no longer represented as open in that snapshot. It does not distinguish a full fill, cancellation, expiry or another terminal state. Use the reason field, order status and execution records together.

Contact Kraken through the current authenticated support route shown in your account. Do not email or paste API secrets, private keys or authentication headers. Support needs the transaction evidence, not your credentials.
Prepare one concise timeline containing:
- Exchange order ID and client order ID, if used.
- Contract symbol, direction and order type.
- Requested size, executed size and any remaining size.
- Cancel request time and cancel acknowledgment time, all in UTC.
- Every fill ID, execution price and fill time.
- Current position size and the order or fill status displayed in the account.
- Screenshots showing the relevant panels, with unrelated account information redacted.
- Relevant REST responses, WebSocket snapshots and deltas, or FIX execution reports, including any later restatement.
State whether Maker Protection was enabled for that contract at the time, if you have verified it. If you have not verified coverage, say so instead of presenting it as the cause. Kraken’s published material does not establish a guaranteed response time or a particular remedy for every mismatch, so keep managing the financial exposure while the review is pending.

Pitfalls that make reconciliation harder
Retrying too quickly
A second placement can create an unintended larger position if the first order eventually fills. Wait for a definitive position and fills check. Kraken’s explicit instruction not to retry after a successful cancel applies to its Maker Protection held-order case and is a sound safeguard while state is uncertain.
Relying on a fixed latency assumption
The protection interval is represented by makerProtectionMillis and can change by market. Do not hard-code a delay based on an old example or assume that every contract has the same setting.
Using only the order-status endpoint
The recent-order endpoint is useful immediately after the event, but its documented five-second scope is not a permanent history. Pair it with the fills endpoint and your own event logs.
Ignoring API rate limits
Kraken documents rate limits for REST requests. Excessive polling can cause errors or gaps in your own capture process. Request the specific order and fills you need, back off on errors and preserve the responses you receive.
Confusing a dead-man switch with a reversal
Kraken’s Futures dead-man’s-switch feature is a prospective network-failure safeguard that can cancel orders under its configured conditions. It cannot reverse a trade that has already executed and does not settle a disputed fill.
Applying a regional rule universally
A 2022 Payward MENA rulebook says cancellation requests may not be processed immediately. That statement is regional and dated; it should not be presented as a current universal rule for every Kraken Futures customer or market.
How common is this?
Kraken’s published documentation does not provide a statistic for how often Futures orders fill after a cancellation. The 100-millisecond figure in the Maker Protection article describes an operational window, not the frequency of late fills. The safest response is therefore event-by-event reconciliation rather than assuming that a displayed cancel or a rare-looking fill is automatically an error.

- Position checked and exposure treated as live.
- Open orders checked for a remaining quantity.
- Order ID and client order ID preserved.
- Requested, executed and remaining sizes recorded.
- Order status compared with individual fills.
- Maker Protection coverage and current
makerProtectionMillissetting verified, not assumed. - WebSocket or FIX events retained when applicable.
- No replacement order submitted while state is uncertain.
- UTC timeline and screenshots prepared for support if records disagree.
The decisive record is the combination of your current position and execution-level fills. A cancellation message can be part of the timeline without erasing a trade that was already committed or released under the market’s matching rules.
