If a holiday purchase falls in price, first check whether the retailer offers a post-purchase price adjustment for that exact item and transaction. If it does not, compare a return-and-rebuy option with the return costs and risks before acting. A holiday return extension does not necessarily extend the deadline for requesting a price adjustment.
What to do when the price drops
- Confirm who sold the item and when. Check your receipt or order page for the seller, purchase date, item or model, and whether you bought online or in a store. Marketplace purchases may follow different terms from items sold directly by the retailer.
- Look for a post-purchase adjustment policy. A competitor price-match policy does not automatically cover a drop in the same retailer’s price after you bought the item. Check the current policy for its deadline, eligible item versions, and exclusions such as marketplace offers, clearance, bundles, member-only deals, limited quantities, or holiday promotions.
- Save proof of the lower price. Keep your receipt or order confirmation and capture the current offer with the seller, item identity, date, and conditions visible. The FTC’s holiday shopping guidance recommends keeping transaction records and asking about sale-item return policies; it is general guidance from 2008, not a current legal rule. Read the FTC pamphlet.
- Ask through the retailer’s stated channel. Provide the order number, original price, lower price, and proof. Ask whether the offer qualifies and whether any difference would be returned to your original payment method.
- If the request is denied, check return terms before deciding. Confirm that the item and seller are still eligible, then compare the potential savings with shipping, restocking fees, inconvenience, price changes, and the risk that the lower-priced offer sells out. Do not send the item back until you understand the retailer’s requirements.
- Check your card’s current benefits guide. Contact the issuer or review the guide for the card you used to ask whether it offers purchase price protection. Coverage is not established here for any particular issuer, and it should not be assumed to be a standard benefit.
How the policy differs by retailer
These are examples from U.S. retailer policies checked October 7, 2026. Terms can change and may differ by item, seller, promotion, channel, and location; check the live policy and your order page before relying on them.

Price adjustment, price match, and return are different options
- Price adjustment: You keep the item and ask the original retailer to refund some or all of the difference because its price dropped after purchase.
- Price match: A retailer agrees to match a qualifying price, often from another seller or channel. The policy may apply only when you buy, rather than after the purchase.
- Return and repurchase: You return the original item and place a new order at the lower price. This depends on return eligibility, costs, stock, and whether the offer remains available; it is not guaranteed to be free or possible.
When comparing options, check the original seller, purchase channel and date, item identity and condition, offer type, proof requirements, adjustment deadline, and return costs. A return deadline and an adjustment deadline are separate terms.
