That tells you whether the transfer is still unconfirmed, confirmed on-chain, or visible on-chain but not yet credited by a receiving platform. What you should do next depends on that status, the network used, and who controls the destination address.
Start by checking the transaction
- Open the transaction in the sending wallet or platform and copy its transaction hash or ID. If the platform has not broadcast it, there may be no on-chain transaction to look up yet.
- Search the hash in a block explorer for the network used. Check whether it is pending or confirmed and, if confirmed, how many confirmations it has. Coinbase’s transfer troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking the transaction status and blockchain explorer.
- Compare the details with the intended recipient’s deposit instructions: asset, destination address, and network. A transaction can be confirmed on one network even when the receiving service does not support that asset-and-network combination.
Keep the hash and any relevant wallet or platform records. If you contact support, use the official website or app and provide the hash rather than sharing credentials or recovery information.
If the transfer is still pending or unconfirmed
“Pending” is a status, not a diagnosis. It can mean the transaction is waiting for confirmations, the network is busy, the fee is not sufficient for prompt processing, a platform or node is temporarily out of sync, or the network has rejected the transaction. Coinbase outlines these possibilities in its troubleshooting article.
Contact the sender or the sending platform to investigate an unconfirmed transaction. Whether it can be cancelled, replaced, or have its fee adjusted depends on the network and wallet or platform; there is no single procedure that applies to every cryptocurrency. Avoid anyone promising a guaranteed fix or a universal wait time.

For context only, Bitcoin.org says new Bitcoin blocks are added about every 10 minutes on average. Block discovery is probabilistic, so this is not a promised confirmation or completion time, and it does not apply to other networks. The receiving service may also require additional confirmations before crediting a deposit.
If it is confirmed but missing from an exchange account
A confirmed transaction can appear on-chain before the receiving exchange credits it. Check the exchange’s required confirmation count and verify that it supports the asset on the network you used. Coinbase Exchange, for example, gives two confirmations as a BTC example; that is not a universal threshold. Its pending transaction guidance explains that a deposit may remain pending while confirmations accumulate.

If the transaction meets the exchange’s stated requirements but is still missing, contact its official support and include the hash, asset, network, amount, and destination account details. Coinbase’s transfer troubleshooting guidance likewise directs users to check the transaction and seek help when needed.
If you sent funds to the wrong address
A confirmed on-chain transfer is generally final. Coinbase says its service cannot cancel or reverse a cryptocurrency transaction; Bitcoin.org likewise says confirmed Bitcoin can only be refunded by the recipient. If you know who controls the address, contact them and ask whether they will return the funds. If the owner is unknown or refuses, the cited guidance does not establish a general recovery route.

Contacting the sending wallet or exchange may help clarify what happened, but do not assume its support team can retrieve funds sent to an unrelated address. Never share your seed phrase or private keys with someone claiming to recover the transfer.
If you used the wrong network or an unsupported asset
This is different from sending to an unrelated address: the destination may belong to a custodial exchange, but the exchange might not support the asset or network combination you used. Contact that receiving platform promptly through its official site or app. Include the transaction hash, asset, network, amount, and the account where you expected the deposit.

Recovery may be possible for some types of unsupported deposits, but it is not guaranteed. Coinbase warns that unsupported transfers may be lost while allowing users to contact support about potential recovery. Blockchain.com’s recovery information describes recovery for some incorrect or unsupported transfers; eligibility, minimum amounts, complexity, and any fee depend on that platform’s policy and can change. Do not treat one provider’s process as a promise from every wallet or exchange.

Use only the receiving or sending platform’s official support channels. Blockchain.com warns that it will not ask users to deposit significant funds to unfreeze an account or speed up a stuck transaction. Treat unsolicited recovery offers, requests for a seed phrase or private key, and demands to send extra crypto as serious warning signs. Do not pay an unknown party to release or recover funds.
