A mixer link can prompt extra scrutiny, but an alert alone does not establish that you knowingly did anything illegal. There is no guarantee that submitting documents will release funds or restore account access.
Why did my crypto exchange flag my transaction?
A mixer or tumbler can make it harder to trace how cryptocurrency moved between addresses. FinCEN’s 2019 advisory lists mixer use as a suspicious-activity indicator in a specific context: transactions that may obscure flows between known wallet addresses and darknet marketplaces. That is a risk indicator for financial institutions to consider, not a finding that every person whose funds touched a mixer committed a crime or that every such transaction has the same explanation. FinCEN Advisory FIN-2019-A003
An exchange may ask about a transaction’s source or path as part of its own review. The reason for a flag and the next steps depend on the platform, your transaction history, and the applicable jurisdiction. A request for information is not, by itself, a ruling on your conduct.
What should I do first?
- Confirm the request inside your account. Navigate directly to the exchange’s known official website or app instead of following an unexpected email or text link. Look for the request or case number and use the platform’s secure response channel. Procedures differ: for example, Kraken says its additional-information requests are viewed and answered by logging in through a web browser. Kraken: Responding to a request for additional information
- Preserve records before changing anything. Save the notice, case number, correspondence, and relevant wallet and exchange records. Export transaction histories where available. Keep original files unedited; if a record is incomplete, describe the limitation rather than presenting a reconstruction as an original.
- Build a transaction timeline. Record dates, amounts, asset, network, transaction IDs, sending and receiving addresses, and any intermediary wallets or services. Explain where you acquired the crypto, how it came into your control, and the path into the flagged deposit.
- Answer each question directly. Identify any mixer hop or indirect exposure you know about, and distinguish what you can verify from what you cannot. Do not invent a source, omit a transfer you know about, alter records, or claim ownership of a wallet without evidence.
- Submit through the official channel and keep a copy. Make documents legible and leave requested facts visible. Redact sensitive information only if the platform permits it and the redaction does not hide information needed for review. Save what you submitted and when, and monitor the authenticated account for follow-up.
What documents prove the source of crypto funds?
There is no single document that proves every crypto transaction. Aim to connect the source, the account or wallet under your control, and the transfer into the exchange. Match the records to the specific question the platform asked, and include evidence for each source if the funds came from more than one place.

| Where the crypto came from | Records that may help | What to make clear |
|---|---|---|
| An external crypto exchange | An exchange statement or account record, plus evidence of the original source where available | Account identity, relevant wallet information, dates, amounts, and the transfer path into the receiving exchange. Kraken lists an external exchange statement showing identifying account and wallet information alongside evidence of the original source as an example. Kraken support |
| An external wallet | A wallet transaction history or other transaction record | Dates, transaction types, amounts, and addresses. Coinbase lists external-wallet histories with these details among possible records. Coinbase Help |
| Funds transferred from an account or wallet already held at an exchange | A bank statement or crypto wallet transaction record showing the transfer into the account | The transfer into the exchange and how it relates to the source you are describing. Kraken gives these as possible examples; the platform may ask for other or additional evidence. Kraken support |
Check that the records tell a consistent story: dates and amounts should line up across statements and transaction histories, and the relevant addresses and transaction IDs should be identifiable. Exchange requirements vary by platform and customer circumstances; follow the specific request rather than assuming these examples guarantee acceptance.
How do I respond to an exchange source-of-funds request?
Use a concise timeline and attach records that support each step. A useful response can identify the original source, when and how you acquired the crypto, the wallets or services it passed through, and the transaction that sent it to the exchange. If a mixer appears in that path, state what you know about the connection and why the transfer occurred if you can substantiate that explanation.

Consider consulting a lawyer experienced in digital assets and the relevant jurisdiction if the exchange identifies a sanctions match, law-enforcement request, formal legal hold, or seizure—or if the amount or potential legal exposure is substantial. OFAC says sanctions obligations apply to digital-currency transactions as they do to traditional currency for persons subject to its jurisdiction. Its guidance cannot determine whether a particular person’s transaction is prohibited. OFAC FAQ 560 OFAC Sanctions Compliance Guidance for the Virtual Currency Industry

FinCEN’s 2013 guidance distinguishes virtual-currency users from exchangers and administrators when describing how federal Bank Secrecy Act rules apply. That distinction concerns regulatory status and business obligations; it does not decide whether an exchange may review or restrict a particular account. FinCEN 2013 guidance
