If it is still unconfirmed, contact the wallet provider promptly and use only that wallet’s documented replacement or fee-bumping process. Before signing anything, verify the destination, amount, and fee. A replacement to an unfamiliar address is a reason to investigate, not proof of who caused it; a confirmed transaction cannot be undone with RBF.
Check what happened to the transaction
- Open the wallet and record the transaction ID. Check whether the transaction is pending or confirmed, then inspect its outputs and amounts. If you use a public blockchain explorer, never enter or share your seed phrase or private keys.
- Compare the transaction details. If the wallet shows a replacement or a conflicting transaction, note its transaction ID, destination addresses, amounts, and fee. Do not assume that a changed or unfamiliar output alone explains who initiated the change.
- Keep a record. Preserve the transaction IDs and note which wallet and device you used. These details can help the wallet provider investigate.
What “replaced” and RBF mean
Replace-by-Fee (RBF) is a mechanism for replacing an unconfirmed transaction with a conflicting transaction that spends the same inputs. Bitcoin Core describes opt-in RBF this way: “Opt-in Replace-by-Fee (RBF) allows transactions to be flagged as replaceable until they are confirmed in a block.” Bitcoin Core’s Opt-in RBF FAQ explains the signaling concept.
RBF is not an automatic refund or a universal cancel button. Whether a replacement is accepted and relayed depends on node mempool policy; policies are not identical across all nodes and miners. BIP 125 specifies opt-in signaling, while Bitcoin Core’s replacement policy has changed across versions, including a move to full-RBF default policy in its policy history. That does not mean every wallet, node, or service will handle replacement the same way.
“Redirected” can describe different situations: a user may have chosen the wrong destination, a conflicting replacement may show different outputs, or a wallet or key-security problem may be involved. The transaction details alone do not establish which explanation is correct, and the available sources do not establish a way to alter the destination of an already signed transaction without creating a replacement.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
If the transaction is still unconfirmed
- Contact the wallet provider through its official support channel. Ask whether this transaction is eligible for RBF, fee bumping, or a wallet-specific cancel or replacement option.
- Use only the wallet that created or controls the transaction. Replacement features differ by wallet. Bitcoin Core’s
bumpfeeoperation applies to an eligible opt-in-RBF transaction in that wallet; it is not a general command for other apps or services. - Review the proposed replacement before signing. Verify the destination, amount, and fee in the wallet’s transaction details. A replacement is a new conflicting spend, so do not treat a “cancel” label as proof that the process is risk-free or universally available.
In Bitcoin Core 26.0, the documented bumpfee operation retains the original inputs and can cover the additional fee by reducing change or adding inputs. The command may fail if wallet or mempool conditions do not allow the replacement. Those details apply to that version of Bitcoin Core, not as a guarantee for another wallet. See the Bitcoin Core 26.0 bumpfee documentation.
If the replacement has an unfamiliar output
Stop approving new wallet prompts on a device that may be affected. Preserve the transaction IDs and wallet and device details, then seek incident guidance from the wallet provider through its official support channel. An unfamiliar output warrants a careful security investigation, but it does not by itself identify an attacker or prove how the replacement occurred. Do not promise yourself that a transaction can be recovered based on the output alone.

If the transaction is confirmed
Once a transaction is confirmed in a block, RBF cannot undo that confirmation. If the confirmed payment went to an address you do not control, the sources cited here establish no Bitcoin protocol mechanism that can force the recipient to return it. Contact the wallet provider if you need help understanding the transaction, but do not confuse a support inquiry with a protocol-level reversal.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How long can a pending transaction remain pending?
There is no universal pending-transaction expiry window established by the sources here. Wallet services may describe their own behavior: for example, Bitcoin.com Wallet says a pending transaction may remain pending for as long as 72 hours before dropping in most cases. Treat that as guidance for that wallet, not a general Bitcoin network rule; follow the policy documented by the wallet you used.
