Do not automatically sell, hold, or buy more because of the loss. The right decision depends on the fund’s design, your financing terms, tax situation, time horizon, objectives and ability to tolerate further losses.
Leveraged ETFs generally target a multiple of an index or other benchmark’s daily return. That target is not a promise of the same multiple over weeks, months or years. Daily compounding can leave the fund far below (or above) the result suggested by simply multiplying the benchmark’s start-to-finish return.

What should I do if my leveraged ETF is down?
Use this order of operations before making a trade. It separates urgent account risks from the longer-term question of whether the position still belongs in your portfolio.
- Pause before adding money. Buying more increases your exposure; it does not change the fund’s daily reset, compounding or stated objective. “Averaging down” is not a repair mechanism.
- Check whether the position uses margin. Open the account’s buying-power and margin screens, read any broker notices, and review the margin agreement. A cash-paid ETF position generally cannot lose more than the amount invested. Margin borrowing can make losses exceed that amount and can trigger a demand for additional collateral or forced sales.
- Identify the exact product. Confirm the ticker, benchmark, leverage multiple, reset period, whether it follows a broad index, sector or single stock, and whether it is an ETF or another exchange-traded product. Never infer a multi-week promise from a “2x” or “3x” label.
- Reconcile daily performance. Compare the fund’s return with the benchmark’s return on each trading day over the same interval. Include fees and the fund’s stated strategy, rather than comparing only the benchmark’s first and last prices.
- Revisit your investment thesis and risk limit. Decide whether you still want that specific daily exposure, whether your intended holding period has changed, and whether the position is now too large relative to your overall portfolio.
- Read the current prospectus and get tailored help when needed. The prospectus describes objectives, derivatives, fees and risks. An investment professional familiar with your goals and risk tolerance can help with the portfolio decision; a tax professional can address a taxable-account sale or distribution.

Why did my leveraged ETF lose more than the index?
Most leveraged ETFs reset exposure every trading day. If a fund seeks twice an index’s daily return, a 4% index gain on one day is generally paired with a target of about 8% for that day, before fees, expenses and tracking effects. The next day’s target is calculated from the fund’s new value, not from the original purchase price. Gains and losses therefore compound along a path, not just across the index’s total change.
The SEC states that performance over weeks, months or years “can differ significantly from the stated multiple of the performance (or inverse of the performance) of their underlying index or benchmark during the same period of time.” The Aug. 29, 2023 SEC bulletin also warns that a fund may fail to meet its daily objective on a particular day.
A two-day compounding illustration
The SEC’s hypothetical starts both the index and a 2x ETF at 1,000. The index falls 10% on day one and rises 10% on day two. The ETF targets a 20% fall and then a 20% rise.

| Day | Index | 2x ETF |
|---|---|---|
| Start | 1,000 | 1,000 |
| After day one | 900 (−10%) | 800 (−20%) |
| After day two | 990 (+10%) | 960 (+20%) |
| Total change | −1% | −4% |
The index is down 1% over the two days, while the 2x ETF is down 4%. This is a mathematical illustration of daily compounding, not a forecast or a record of a particular fund.

SEC examples from actual periods
The SEC bulletin gives two historical examples tied to particular funds and periods. They show why a benchmark’s net gain does not mechanically produce a leveraged ETF gain.
| Period and product objective | Index result | ETF result | How to read it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Four-month example; ETF sought twice the index’s daily return | +2% | −6% | An SEC example, not a typical or expected outcome. |
| Same four-month period; inverse ETF sought twice the inverse daily return | +2% index | −25% | Inverse daily exposure can also erode over a longer interval. |
| Second example; ETF sought three times a different index’s daily return | Around +8% | −53% | “Around” is the SEC’s description of the index result; this is tied to one fund and period. |
| Second example; inverse ETF sought three times the inverse daily return | Around +8% index | −90% | Not a forecast, average or current-market statistic. |
Volatility, the sequence of up and down days, fees, financing and tracking differences all affect the path. A flat or rising index at the end of your holding period therefore does not prove that the fund operated incorrectly.
Can a leveraged ETF recover?
It can rise after a loss, but no rule requires it to return to your purchase price, and a benchmark rebound does not erase the fund’s path-dependent decline. After a 50% loss, the position needs a 100% gain to reach its original value; after a 70% loss, it needs about a 233% gain. Those arithmetic requirements describe what would be needed, not what will happen.
Ask whether you would buy the same fund today, at its current price, for the same intended holding period. If the answer is no, an average-cost target or desire to “get back to even” is not, by itself, a sound reason to keep the position. If the answer is yes, verify that you still accept daily leverage, volatility and the possibility of further losses. The decision should be based on future exposure and risk capacity, not on the historical purchase price.

Should I sell my leveraged ETF after a big loss?
There is no universal SEC instruction to sell or hold. Use a decision checklist instead of treating the percentage loss as a signal by itself.
Questions that support a reduction or exit
- Has the position become larger than the percentage of your portfolio you can afford to risk?
- Did you need a multi-month or multi-year investment, even though the fund targets a daily result?
- Has the underlying thesis, benchmark or single-stock exposure changed?
- Would another loss force you to sell essential assets or miss a financial goal?
- Are margin interest, collateral requirements or broker terms creating pressure you did not intend to take?
Questions that could support continued exposure
- Do you deliberately seek this fund’s daily objective and understand its reset mechanics?
- Can you withstand additional losses without borrowing more or abandoning a necessary goal?
- Does the fund’s benchmark and strategy still match your written plan?
- Have you checked the prospectus, fees, derivatives and tracking history for this exact product?
These questions do not produce a one-size-fits-all trade instruction. They make the choice explicit: reduce, close, or retain only the exposure you can defend under your own plan.
Margin makes a sharp decline time-sensitive
If you borrowed to buy the ETF, contact the brokerage promptly when you see a margin call, maintenance warning or liquidation notice. A firm may demand additional cash or securities on short notice, sell securities to repay the loan, and—under the account agreement—choose which holdings to liquidate. You may not have time to wait for a rebound.
The SEC’s June 10, 2021 bulletin gives an illustrative margin example: an investor contributes $25 and borrows $25 to buy a $50 stock. If the stock falls to $15, the investor has lost more than 100% of the initial $25 and still owes $10 plus loan interest. This example concerns a margin-purchased stock, not a prediction of any ETF’s loss, but it demonstrates why a borrowed position can create a debt after the asset value is depleted. Read the SEC’s margin-risk bulletin and your own broker agreement for deadlines and requirements.

In a fully paid cash account, losses in an ETF are generally limited to the amount invested. Other borrowing arrangements, options or account features can change that result, so verify the actual account structure rather than assuming it is cash-only.

Pull the latest prospectus and record the following in a worksheet:
| Item | What to verify | Why it matters after a decline |
|---|---|---|
| Benchmark | Name and methodology of the index, sector or single stock | A different benchmark can make a comparison misleading. |
| Target and reset | For example, 2x or −3x of the daily return; daily reset language | The multiple generally applies to one trading day, not your entire holding period. |
| Strategy | Derivatives, swaps, futures, rebalancing and collateral practices | These introduce costs, counterparty and implementation risks beyond the headline multiple. |
| Expenses | Prospectus-listed management fees and other expenses | Costs reduce results over time, especially when the benchmark is flat. |
| Product status | Whether it is a registered ETF or another exchange-traded product | The SEC notes that some commodity- or currency-based ETPs may not be registered investment companies and may not provide the same protections. |
Also compare daily fund returns with daily benchmark returns over the dates you owned the shares. A start-to-end chart can hide the alternating gains and losses that produced the result.
Taxes after a leveraged ETF loss
Tax treatment depends on the account, your basis, holding period, other gains and losses, and distributions. The SEC cautions that daily resets can produce significant short-term capital gains that may not be offset by a loss and that leveraged and inverse funds may be less tax-efficient than traditional ETFs. A fund can distribute taxable gains even when your account’s position is down.

Before selling in a taxable account, obtain the broker’s cost-basis and distribution information and ask a tax professional how the transaction fits your circumstances. Do not assume that a paper loss, a fund distribution or a short holding period will receive the same treatment as another investment.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using the label as a long-term promise: “3x” normally describes a daily target, not a guaranteed threefold multi-month return.
- Buying more solely to lower the average cost: this increases exposure without changing the fund’s mechanics or your risk capacity.
- Ignoring financing: margin can turn an ETF loss into a collateral demand, forced sale and remaining debt.
- Treating SEC illustrations as forecasts: the 2x and 3x examples are tied to specified periods and funds, not expected market outcomes.
- Assuming every exchange-traded product has identical protections: read the prospectus and confirm its legal structure.
- Deciding from the purchase price alone: evaluate the exposure you would choose today and the loss you can withstand from here.
A practical decision record
Write down the fund’s benchmark and daily target, your share count and cost basis, whether the position is margined, the percentage of your portfolio at risk, and the maximum additional loss you could tolerate. Note the reason you originally bought it and the date by which that reason was supposed to be tested. Then choose one action—close, reduce, or retain—along with a condition that would make you reassess. This record helps prevent a volatile day from replacing your investment plan.
The SEC’s guidance is clear that daily objectives can fail to translate over longer periods and that not every fund will meet its stated objective on every trading day. A sharp decline is therefore a prompt to verify mechanics, financing and fit—not proof that a rebound is due or that a sale is automatically required.
