Before buying a satellite internet kit, confirm service at the exact address, check whether the antenna can be installed with a clear view of the sky, and compare the full cost of equipment, installation, and service. Then match the plan’s speed, latency, and data-priority rules to how your household actually uses the internet.
Will satellite internet work at your address?
Availability and plan options depend on location, so check the provider’s order flow using the precise service address before buying hardware or relying on a price advertised elsewhere. Hughesnet says its plans vary by geographic location and require a clear view of the southern sky. That requirement makes the property itself part of the buying decision, not just the provider’s coverage map. Hughesnet’s FAQ also notes that, as of April 10, 2024, the FCC requires internet service providers to provide broadband labels for home plans.
Use the provider’s address-specific plan information and broadband label to verify what is offered at your location. Plans, offers, and hardware generations can change; a generic product listing or a price shown for another address may not apply.
Can the antenna be installed properly?
Satellite service needs an antenna with an unobstructed view of the sky. Before ordering, look for a stable mounting location and consider how the cable will reach the indoor equipment. Trees, buildings, rooflines, and other obstructions may limit where the antenna can go. Hughesnet says the dish can be mounted on or near the property and that the installer determines a suitable location; it does not always have to be on the roof. Its connection uses an outdoor satellite dish and an indoor modem, with Wi-Fi built into its plans. Hughesnet’s buyer’s guide describes the setup.

Clarify whether installation is professional or self-install, what standard installation includes, whether extra work costs more, and whether someone must be home. Hughesnet says standard residential installation typically takes 2–3 hours and the customer must be onsite. Its residential plan information gives that timing as a typical estimate, not a guarantee for every property.
- Identify a potential mounting spot with a clear sky view.
- Check the route from the antenna to the indoor modem or router.
- Ask what happens if the installer finds the preferred location unsuitable.
- Confirm any site-specific charges and the requirement for someone to be onsite.
What is the full cost—not just the kit price?
Compare the total cost of getting connected and keeping the service, rather than treating the hardware price as the whole purchase. Depending on the provider and offer, costs may include equipment purchase or lease, installation, activation, monthly service, taxes, surcharges, and fees for ending service early. Check the length of any promotional price and what the monthly charge becomes afterward.

Viasat says its installation fee varies by location and credit status, and its broadband label identifies the address-specific offer and applicable service, equipment lease, and taxes. Use the label for the actual address to make a meaningful comparison; a general advertised rate does not establish what you will pay. Viasat’s broadband label also provides typical speed and latency information that it updates quarterly.
Before placing an order, write down the one-time costs, recurring costs, promotional period, minimum term, and cancellation charges. If an amount or term is not clear in the offer, ask the provider to confirm it before you commit.

Do the speed and latency fit your household?
Download speed affects activities such as loading web pages and streaming; upload speed matters for sending files and video calls. Latency—the delay before data makes a round trip—matters more for interactive tasks such as video calls and online gaming. Consider the whole household’s use, including simultaneous streams, remote work, and connected devices, rather than choosing from a download-speed number alone.
Starlink publishes typical figures of 25–220 Mbps download, 5–20 Mbps upload, and 25–60 ms land latency, with higher latency in certain remote locations. These are vendor-published typical ranges, not a promise of performance at a particular home. Starlink says actual speeds may be lower and vary with location, time of day, and plan priority. Starlink’s specifications provide the plan and performance context.

Hughesnet lists residential speeds up to 100 Mbps on its Elite plan and describes Fusion as combining satellite and wireless technologies for lower latency in select areas. Availability varies by location, and these are provider claims rather than independent comparative test results. Check the address-specific plan details and consider whether the upload, latency, and performance under congestion suit your most important activities.

“Unlimited” service does not necessarily mean the same speed or priority at all times. Read the plan’s data rules to see what happens after any monthly allowance or usage threshold, and how traffic is handled when the network is busy.

- Hughesnet: Plans include monthly Priority Data followed by Standard Data; the provider says Standard Data may be slower during busy periods. Its buyer’s guide warns that rapid-response gaming and heavy streaming can use Priority Data quickly on other plans, while describing Fusion as a lower-latency option in select areas. Review the buyer’s guide and plan terms for the specific offer.
- Viasat: The provider says some plans may deprioritize or slow service after usage thresholds. The applicable threshold and treatment depend on the plan, so check its address-specific broadband label and service terms. Viasat’s label is a starting point for that comparison.
For a household that streams frequently or has many connected devices, the practical question is not only how much data is included, but also whether reduced priority or slower speeds after heavy use would disrupt your routine.
What exactly comes in the kit?
Confirm what the advertised kit includes and whether it is compatible with the service plan and region you intend to use. Starlink defines its “Starlink Kit” as the user terminal, Wi-Fi router, power supply, and mount. Check the current listing and hardware generation rather than assuming every kit or accessory is interchangeable. Starlink’s specifications define the kit components.
For Hughesnet, the provider describes an outdoor dish and indoor modem, with built-in Wi-Fi in its plans. Installation determines the suitable dish location. Do not buy a generic mount or cable accessory without first confirming compatibility with the specific equipment generation and installation location.
A practical comparison before you order
| Check | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Address and placement | Service and plan availability for the exact address; sky-view requirements; a viable mounting and cable route. |
| Total cost and commitment | Equipment purchase or lease, installation and activation, monthly price after promotions, taxes and surcharges, minimum term, and cancellation fees. |
| Performance | Plan-specific download and upload expectations, latency, and how performance may vary by location, time, or network congestion. |
| Data treatment | Included priority or high-speed data, usage thresholds, and what happens after them or during busy periods. |
| Installation and support | Self-install or professional installation, what standard work covers, possible extra charges, repair arrangements, and whether someone must be onsite. |
Make the decision using the actual address-specific terms, not a headline speed or kit price by itself. That is the clearest way to judge whether the service, installation, and ongoing bill fit the home and the way you need to use the connection.
