A sudden jump in sessions labeled as AI shopping referrals does not, by itself, prove that more people are shopping on your site—or that sales increased. Start by checking how analytics classified the visits, whether measurement or site settings changed, and whether the arrivals look like real browser sessions. Compare those findings with engagement and orders before calling the spike a business gain.
First, confirm what actually increased
Compare the spike period with the equivalent prior period, using the same date range and reporting scope. Check whether the change appears in sessions, users, landing-page views, key events, and completed orders. A rise in one report or metric may not represent a broad increase in shoppers.
- Check whether the change affects one property, data stream, or report dimension, or appears across the site.
- Keep metric scopes straight: for example, do not compare event-scoped channel data with session-scoped source data as though they describe the same thing.
- Note the date the increase began and whether it was a gradual rise or a sharp step.
Analytics labels describe attribution, not identity or intent. Google defines referral traffic by an external source and says direct traffic applies when referral-source information is unavailable or the referring source or search term is configured to be ignored. Neither label alone establishes that a person browsed, intended to buy, or completed a purchase. See Google’s explanation of traffic-source dimensions and its definition of direct traffic.
Find the source, channel, and landing pages
Break the affected sessions down by session source/medium, session default channel group, landing page, geography, device category, and relevant conversion events. Inspect the precise source hostnames rather than inferring a source from a broad “AI” label. A change limited to one assistant and a few unusual entry pages needs a different explanation from growth spread across normal landing pages and engaged visits.

#1 Best Overall
Google Analytics’ current default channel group includes an AI Assistant channel for recognized sources “like ChatGPT, Gemini, Deepseek, Copilot, or Grok.” Recognition depends on the referrer matching a source Google recognizes; the label is not a general detector for every AI-related visit. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode are classified as Organic Search, not AI Assistant. The default channel group cannot be edited. See Google’s current default channel definitions.
Google’s May 13, 2026 release note says recognized chatbot referrals can be reported with medium ai-assistant, channel AI Assistant, and campaign (ai-assistant). The release note names ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude; the current channel definition page is the better reference for the channel’s presently listed sources. Read the release note.

If you use a custom channel group, check its rules and order
Google allows custom channel groups for additional assistant sources, including Perplexity in its example. Channel rules are evaluated in order: a session is assigned to the first channel whose definition it matches. If you added an AI channel, inspect its conditions and place it above Referral—and above any other channel it could match—so a broad rule does not claim the session first. Treat Google’s sample regex as an example to adapt, not as a complete, permanent list of vendors. Review Google’s custom channel group guidance.
Look for changes that could have shifted attribution
Check the start date against changes to analytics tags, consent settings, campaign tagging, routing, domains, checkout flows, and report configuration. Google says document referrers and campaign values inform source processing. A direct visit does not necessarily override an existing referrer, and campaign values received mid-session can be associated with relevant events without retroactively changing the existing session’s source.

Also review unwanted-referral settings. They are commonly used for payment processors and other domains involved in a site-managed transaction. Do not add an AI assistant domain merely to make reports look tidier: excluding it can hide information useful to diagnosis. Google notes that attribution previously assigned to an excluded domain can still matter for returning users. Check Google’s unwanted-referral guidance.
Separate browser sessions from automated requests
Browser analytics and server or CDN logs observe different layers. A crawler can request pages and appear in infrastructure logs without generating a browser analytics session. Compare the two streams, but do not add crawler requests to session or shopper counts. This distinction is also covered in an ecommerce industry guide to AI shopping traffic.
Rank #4
A user-agent string alone is not proof that a request came from a particular bot. Before classifying log traffic, consult the relevant platform’s current bot-verification information and use the checks it provides. If you cannot verify the requester, describe it as an unverified automated-looking request rather than a confirmed crawler.

Check whether the sessions arrive on pages shoppers would plausibly use, continue into relevant product or checkout activity, and contribute to key events or orders. Compare engagement and conversion quality with the site’s ordinary traffic, while keeping the comparison within the same measurement scope. A concentration on one or two unexpected pages, unusual geographies or devices, or repetitive event patterns warrants closer investigation than a broad lift across normal entry pages and engaged sessions.

Published figures can offer context but cannot validate a particular site’s spike. Chartbeat reported that ChatGPT pageviews in its publisher network grew more than 200% year over year while AI chatbots remained below 1% of that network’s pageviews in its Q1 2026 report. Those figures describe Chartbeat’s network, not ecommerce shopping referrals generally or an expected result for your site. See Chartbeat’s research resources.
How to report the finding
State what the data supports: which channel or source rose, which pages and cohorts were affected, whether measurement or configuration changes coincide with the timing, and whether engagement, key events, and orders moved with sessions. Report suspected automated activity separately from browser sessions. If the available records do not establish the cause or revenue impact, say that it remains unresolved.
