Use Google Analytics 4 (GA4) to measure the AI referrals it can identify: filter sessions by observed AI source values, then examine validated purchase events and revenue from those sessions. This gives you a view of identifiable AI-attributed traffic—not every sale an AI answer may have influenced. The distinction matters because GA4 processes sessions without referral-source information as direct traffic.
What an AI referral report can—and cannot—tell you
A GA4 report filtered to known AI sources can show visits attributed to those sources and the purchases or other key events recorded in those visits. It cannot establish that AI caused a purchase, or recover every journey where a shopper saw an AI answer but arrived later through another channel.
Google says sessions with no referral-source information are processed as direct traffic. Missing source data can therefore keep some AI-influenced activity out of an AI-referral filter. The documentation does not quantify how much any particular store loses this way. Treat the report as identifiable AI-attributed traffic, and keep unknown or self-reported influence separate.
Choose the GA4 traffic-source scope that matches your question
GA4 offers traffic-source dimensions at different scopes. They answer different questions, so do not combine them as if they were the same attribution view.

For traffic and purchases that occurred in a particular visit, use session-scoped source dimensions. Use first-user dimensions when the question is how users were first acquired. For event-scoped source dimensions, name the property’s selected attribution model. Set up trustworthy purchase and funnel events
Before judging a channel, confirm that GA4 receives the events that describe your store’s actual customer journey. Google’s [ecommerce measurement guide] covers events including item views, cart actions, checkout, purchase, refunds, and promotions.

- Choose the business outcome you intend to measure, such as a completed purchase or lead submission. Do not treat every event—or a page view—as a sale.
- For purchase revenue, send the transaction value and event-level
currency. Include item information and other ecommerce parameters when available. - Use only funnel events that fit your customer journey, such as
view_item,add_to_cart,begin_checkout,purchase, andrefund. - Test that events arrive and fire under the intended conditions before relying on reports. Google’s implementation guide specifies a Google tag and access to the site’s source code and Analytics for this type of setup.
GA4’s Data API defines ecommercePurchases as the count of completed purchase events and checkouts as occurrences of begin_checkout. Those are analytics event counts, not automatically the merchant’s authoritative order totals. Reconcile purchase counts and revenue against backend order records for the same dates, and investigate differences. Apply the store’s own rules for discounts, tax, shipping, cancellations, and refunds; Google’s general documentation does not define those accounting rules for an individual merchant.
Find sessions with an observable AI source
- Open a GA4 traffic-acquisition report or an equivalent view that lets you inspect session-scoped traffic-source dimensions.
- Filter or break down the report by session source and session medium to isolate AI services identified in your property’s data.
- Build the list from source values actually observed in the property. Keep the values and classification rule documented, and review them as they change rather than assuming there is one permanent, universal list of AI referrers.
- For each included source, report sessions, relevant engaged sessions, implemented funnel events, purchases or other defined key events, and purchase revenue. State exactly how you calculate any conversion rate—for example, purchases divided by sessions.
Use session-scoped dimensions for the current visit’s source. A first-user source answers a different acquisition question and can assign a user’s later purchase journey to the source associated with that user’s first session.

App handoffs, copied links, privacy choices, redirects, and other behaviors may affect whether source information reaches the site. The GA4 documentation establishes how sessions without referral-source information are handled, but it does not establish the amount of missing AI attribution for a particular store.
Use UTM tags only on links you control
For links in your own campaigns, reports, or other placements you control, apply a consistent tagging convention using parameters such as utm_source, utm_medium, and utm_campaign. Add other fields where your campaign scheme calls for them, then test a tagged visit and inspect the resulting session dimensions. Google’s [manual-tagging and traffic-source guidance] explains how UTM parameters map to reporting dimensions. It also notes that missing parameters can produce (not set) values and that present UTM values can supply cross-channel source values in certain cases when click IDs cannot be used as intended.

You generally do not control the links an AI service uses when citing a retailer. Adding UTMs to your own canonical URL does not automatically tag citations created or shared by third parties. If a visit arrives without an identifiable source, do not silently reclassify it as AI traffic.
A post-purchase “How did you hear about us?” question can provide a separate, self-reported view of discovery. Label it that way and account for response bias; it is not the same as a GA4-attributed referral.

Build a recurring comparison that is fair
Compare AI-attributed visits with organic search, paid traffic, or other referrals using the same date range, event definitions, currency, and attribution scope. A useful recurring view includes:
- Volume: sessions, using session-scoped source dimensions and a fixed date range.
- Funnel progress: add-to-cart and checkout events where implemented, with rates calculated from consistent denominators.
- Completed outcomes: validated purchases or another clearly defined key event—not an arbitrary event count.
- Revenue: recorded purchase revenue and, where useful, average purchase revenue and refund handling under the store’s stated rules.
- Attribution basis: whether the view uses first-user, session, or event-scoped source, and the model where applicable.
- Coverage: the exact source values counted as AI referrals, with unknown, direct, and self-reported influence kept distinct.
Do not compare providers by name alone if their referrer information is captured differently. Show the precise source values included for each platform and revisit the classification when observed values change. A difference in captured traffic may reflect measurement coverage as well as performance.
There is no universal AI-referral conversion rate established by the cited GA4 documentation. Avoid claiming that AI traffic converts at a particular rate or multiple without a credible, dated benchmark whose population and method fit the claim.
