Before buying a bank stock, review the bank’s latest filings and test its earnings, loan quality, capital, liquidity and funding, and sensitivity to interest rates. No single ratio establishes that a bank is a good buy: its valuation, business mix, comparable banks, and your own circumstances matter too.
Start with the bank’s filings
For a U.S. bank that reports to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), begin with its latest annual Form 10-K and quarterly Form 10-Q. The SEC explains what these filings cover in its guides to annual reports and quarterly and current reports. Find the actual filings through EDGAR, and check for relevant Form 8-Ks reporting material interim developments.
Read beyond the headline figures
In the 10-K, read the business description and risk factors, then management’s discussion and analysis (MD&A), market-risk disclosures, financial statements, notes, and auditor’s report. MD&A explains management’s view of results, liquidity, capital resources, trends, uncertainties, and significant accounting estimates. The notes show the accounting judgments and measurements behind reported figures—details that can affect comparisons between banks.
If the bank does not file with the SEC
Some banks do not file SEC reports. Investor.gov says they still provide updated financial information to banking regulators and points readers to the Federal Reserve, Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC), and Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). The Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council (FFIEC) Central Data Repository provides access to Call Report information, including schedules with detail on a bank’s assets, liabilities, and capital accounts.

Check whether earnings are durable
Look at net interest income, net interest margin (NIM), noninterest income, expenses, and returns on average assets and equity. NIM is net interest income divided by average earning assets. Review multiple quarters and years rather than treating one strong quarter as a reliable run rate.
Ask what changed and why. A one-time gain, unusual expense, changing funding costs, or rising credit-loss provisions can make reported earnings look stronger or weaker than the underlying trend. The bank’s MD&A and financial statement notes can help explain those movements.

Look beneath the loan-loss totals
Review trends in delinquencies, nonperforming loans, charge-offs, provisions for credit losses, and the allowance for credit losses. Then examine the loan portfolio by type and sector: concentrated losses can be obscured by calm-looking totals. The FDIC’s Quarterly Banking Profile tracks exposures including commercial real estate, business, consumer, residential, and agricultural loans, providing context for the kinds of lending risks to investigate.
Assess capital, liquidity, and funding together
Capital
Check the bank’s regulatory capital ratios, how they have changed, and what management says about capital resources and planned distributions. Compare equivalent measures and approaches: applicable regulatory requirements and ratios can vary by bank. A high ratio on its own does not eliminate risks elsewhere in the business.

Liquidity and funding
Review deposit growth and composition, wholesale funding, available liquidity sources, and management’s discussion of stress scenarios. Consider whether the bank relies heavily on concentrated or potentially rate-sensitive funding. Deposit stability and access to other funding can affect how resilient the bank is when conditions change.
Understand interest-rate and securities exposure
Interest-rate changes can affect both a bank’s earnings and the value of its securities. Read the bank’s market-risk disclosures for its specific exposures and assumptions. Consider these disclosures alongside the bank’s net interest margins, unrealized securities losses, liquidity, deposit trends, and wholesale funding: the FDIC describes these as connected funding and interest-rate considerations in its banking risk analysis.

Review accounting, controls, and management consistency
Read accounting-policy notes, changes in estimates, auditor findings, and management’s explanations for material year-over-year changes. Look for whether explanations align with the figures and remain consistent over time. The CAMELS supervisory framework groups bank assessment into capital, asset quality, management, earnings, liquidity, and sensitivity to market risk. It can serve as a public-reading checklist, but it is not a substitute for a regulator’s confidential examination.
Compare the bank with relevant peers and sector data
When comparable peers exist, compare earnings and returns, asset quality and reserves, capital, liquidity and funding, and interest-rate sensitivity. Choose banks with similar business models, loan books, geography, and size where possible. Use consistent reporting periods and definitions; differences in business mix and accounting judgments can change what a headline ratio means.
Best Value
The FDIC Quarterly Banking Profile offers system-level context on earnings, loan and deposit activity, asset quality, and other conditions at FDIC-insured institutions. It is not a forecast for an individual bank. The FDIC says the profile is generally published about 55 days after quarter-end, so check the report’s period and publication date before using its figures. Federal Reserve sector aggregates likewise describe the banking system; they are not buy thresholds or predictions for a particular stock.
Make the stock decision separately from the health check
Financial results can help you judge a bank’s condition and the durability of its business, but they do not tell you whether its shares are attractively priced. A buy decision also requires evaluating the current share price against bank-specific facts and your investment circumstances. There is no universal ratio or threshold that turns the checks above into a buy signal.
