What to Check Before Transferring Crypto to a Newly Licensed Provider

A new crypto licence is only a starting point. Check the provider’s current regulator listing, authorized services, identity and exact deposit instructions before transferring.

Before transferring cryptocurrency to a newly licensed provider, verify its current authorization on the regulator’s official register, confirm that the permission covers the service you plan to use, and match the listed legal entity to the provider’s app, website and contact details. Then check the exact asset, network and deposit instructions in your authenticated account. A new licence is not, by itself, proof that a provider may serve you or that your funds are protected.

1. Identify the regulator that applies to you

Authorization depends on jurisdiction, the provider’s activities and the service offered to you. A licence in one country or region does not automatically permit a provider to serve customers elsewhere. Start with the regulator responsible for the provider’s service in your location; do not rely on a provider’s general claim that it is “licensed.”

Regulatory examples illustrate why the location matters, but they are not interchangeable rules:

  • Dubai, excluding the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC): The Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) register covers fully licensed providers and applicants with In-Principle Approval (IPA), and shows the activities attached to a licence. VARA says IPA applicants may not operate, conduct virtual-asset activities or service clients until they receive a full VASP licence. Check the exact entity and activity on the VARA Public Register.
  • Australia: AUSTRAC’s public register lets you check registration for designated virtual-asset services, including exchange, safekeeping and accepting instructions to transfer virtual assets. Covered businesses must register before offering those services in Australia. See AUSTRAC’s register announcement.
  • Pakistan: PVARA’s licensing guidance says it maintains a public register and that a licence covers only the categories expressly specified. Licensees must publish details including their legal name, registered office, contact details, licence number and authorized categories or services. The page describes regulations notified on 21 August 2026; those rules are specific to Pakistan. See PVARA’s licensing guidance.
  • European Union: The European Supervisory Authorities (ESAs) recommend checking that a crypto-asset service provider is authorized in the EU. MiCA has applied to certain crypto-assets since December 2024, but legal protection can be limited depending on the asset and service. See the ESAs’ consumer warning.
  • Indonesia: OJK advises consumers to use listed providers and official channels, and to match entity, app and website details. Its guidance warns about unofficial links, misspelled or lookalike domains, and unclear promotions through social media or group chats. See OJK’s whitelist release.
  • United Kingdom: The FCA advises consumers to search for a firm in the Financial Services Register, check its permitted activities and compare its contact details with those shown there. It says a firm absent from the register is unlikely to have permission to offer crypto products. See the FCA’s crypto investment scam guidance.

2. Check the official register and read the status carefully

Find the regulator’s register independently—by typing the regulator’s known address or locating it through an independently verified source—rather than following a link in an unsolicited message or promotion. A provider’s own website, a social-media post or a certificate it supplies is not a substitute for the regulator’s current record.

  • Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
  • Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.

Search for the provider’s exact legal entity, not just its trading name. Compare the result with the company details in the provider’s terms, account information and deposit instructions. Read the register’s status label and any conditions: full authorization, registration, conditional approval and in-principle approval do not necessarily grant the same rights. Terms differ between regulators, so interpret the entry using that regulator’s own explanations.

3. Confirm the permission covers the service you will use

A listing alone does not establish that the provider is authorized to perform every crypto-related service. Check the activities shown on the record against what you intend to do, such as exchange, brokerage, custody or transfer. VARA lists licensed activities for each provider, while PVARA says its licences cover only the categories expressly specified. If the service you need is not clearly within the provider’s listed scope, pause and ask the regulator or provider for clarification through independently verified channels.

4. Match the official entity to the app, website and contacts

Scammers can imitate a real provider or misuse its name. Compare the legal entity, app name, website address and contact details with the regulator’s listing and the provider’s independently verified official information. A familiar brand name is not enough if the domain or contact details differ. The FCA specifically advises checking that contact details match the register; OJK warns about lookalike domains and unofficial links.

Do not use a deposit address, login page or support contact supplied only in an unexpected email, message, social post or group chat. If an address, app publisher, legal entity or contact channel does not match, do not proceed until you have resolved the discrepancy using independently verified details.

5. Verify every detail of the deposit route

Once you are signed in through an authenticated provider channel, open its current deposit instructions for the specific asset. Before sending, compare the instructions with the sending wallet and confirm:

  • the exact crypto-asset and ticker;
  • the blockchain or network selected on both sides;
  • the destination address, copied or scanned from the authenticated instructions;
  • any required memo, tag or other payment reference;
  • the current minimum deposit, fee and any conditions for crediting or withdrawing the funds.

These details vary by provider and asset. The regulator guidance cited here does not establish universal network, memo, fee or test-transfer rules. A small preliminary transfer is not a guarantee of safety, and there is no universal test amount. If the sending wallet and destination do not support the same asset and network, or any instruction is unclear, stop and confirm the details with the provider through a verified support channel before initiating the transfer.

6. Understand custody, complaints and possible recourse

Authorization does not guarantee that a transaction will succeed, that an asset is low risk or that losses will be reimbursed. The ESAs warn that legal protection can be limited depending on the crypto-asset and service. Before depositing, find out who controls the private keys, how assets are held, what the provider says happens during an outage or insolvency, how to submit a complaint and what withdrawal restrictions apply. These terms can differ by provider, asset, service and jurisdiction; read the applicable account and custody terms rather than assuming a licence answers these questions.

7. Use a stop rule when details conflict

Do not send funds while any material detail remains inconsistent or unverified. Stop if the register entry, authorization status, activity scope, legal entity, app, domain, contact details or deposit instructions do not agree. Seek clarification from the regulator or provider using contact information you verified independently; do not rely on the questionable channel to authenticate itself.
