Before investing in an IT services company, check what it sells and how durable its revenue is, whether its contracts earn acceptable margins, and whether reported profits turn into cash. Then assess talent and delivery risks, AI-related opportunities and threats, the balance sheet, and whether the share price is reasonable under more than one plausible business outlook. Use the company’s latest filings for every metric: this is a diligence framework, not a stock recommendation.
1. Understand what the company sells and how revenue is earned
Start with the business description and segment notes in the issuer’s latest annual and quarterly filings. IT services can include application development, consulting, systems integration, infrastructure management, business process services, or a combination. The mix matters: revenue may come from ongoing managed services, usage-based work, or projects that end when a defined engagement is complete.
For each major service line, ask how much work is recurring or renewed, how much depends on winning new projects, and how much relies on clients’ discretionary technology budgets. Read contract duration and termination disclosures, and note the industries and customers driving demand. A strong year can reflect acquisitions, currency movements, or a temporary shift in project mix rather than broad-based organic growth; look for management’s explanation of those factors.
Check concentration and renewal patterns
Review customer concentration by major client, industry, and geography. A company reliant on a few customers or on one industry’s spending may be more exposed when a large engagement ends or budgets tighten. Look for reported retention, renewal, or new-contract measures, but verify how the issuer defines them and whether the definition changes over time.

For example, EPAM’s 2025 Form 10-K says client work can vary year to year, engagements are typically individual projects, and clients may reduce, terminate, or move work in-house. It also describes exposure to spending declines in industries it serves. Those disclosures illustrate diligence questions; they are specific to EPAM, not proof that every IT services company has the same exposure. EPAM 2025 Form 10-K.
Treat bookings and backlog as context, not guaranteed sales
Compare the issuer’s reported revenue growth with its definitions of bookings, signings, backlog, and deferred revenue. These measures are not interchangeable across companies. IBM, for example, describes signings as management’s initial estimate of a client’s commitment under a services contract and backlog as the estimated remaining value to be recognized after revenue and backlog adjustments. Such figures can help indicate demand visibility, but they are estimates rather than guaranteed future revenue. IBM 2025 Form 10-K.
Gartner’s filing identifies client retention, renewals, new contract value, backlog, and deferred revenue as relevant business drivers and risks. Track each issuer’s own measure consistently; reconcile definitions before comparing peers. Gartner 2025 Form 10-K.
2. Test whether growth is profitable
Revenue growth alone does not show that a services business is improving. Examine gross and operating margin trends, preferably by segment, and read management’s discussion for explanations involving utilization, wages, subcontractors, pricing, project mix, restructuring, and acquisitions. If disclosed, track utilization alongside headcount: hiring faster than billable demand can pressure margins, while productivity gains may allow more work without a matching increase in labor.

- It can be a gift option
Consider the contract model. Time-and-materials work, fixed-price projects, outcome-based engagements, and managed services do not carry identical risks. Under fixed-price or productivity-linked terms, an inaccurate estimate of scope, staffing, cost, or expected efficiency can make a contract less profitable even when it generates revenue. EPAM specifically warns about these estimation risks in its 2025 filing. EPAM 2025 Form 10-K.
- Are segment margins stable, improving, or falling, and does management explain why?
- Are wages, subcontractor use, or project overruns rising faster than pricing or productivity?
- Does growth require a similar increase in employees, or is output per employee improving?
- Are one-time restructuring or acquisition costs obscuring the underlying trend?
3. Check whether earnings convert into cash
Compare net income with cash from operations over several years rather than relying on one reporting period. Persistent gaps deserve investigation. Review receivables, unbilled work or contract assets, deferred revenue or contract liabilities, and collection trends to understand whether reported sales are being collected on time.
Also consider whether working-capital swings, stock-based compensation, acquisitions, or restructuring explain differences between earnings and cash. EPAM notes that delayed payment or client payment problems can extend collection time and increase bad-debt expense. EPAM 2025 Form 10-K.
4. Assess talent, delivery footprint, and concentration
Skilled employees and effective staffing are core inputs to IT services. Check employee counts, hiring and attrition, skill mix, wage trends, utilization where reported, and reliance on subcontractors. Ask whether the company can recruit and retain people in the capabilities clients are buying, and whether its delivery model depends heavily on particular locations.
Map delivery geography against political, currency, infrastructure, and regulatory exposures, then consider those alongside client concentration by sector and region. As a dated, company-specific example, EPAM reported approximately 14,100 global delivery, administrative, and support personnel based in Ukraine and Belarus as of December 31, 2025. This figure describes EPAM at that date; it is not a sector-wide statistic. EPAM 2025 Form 10-K.
5. Examine both sides of AI exposure
AI may help services firms automate routine work, deliver projects faster, and win new client assignments. It may also reduce billable hours, change pricing, encourage clients to build or modify applications in-house, bring new competitors into the market, or require investment that weighs on costs. The net effect cannot be assumed from broad claims about AI adoption.
Look for evidence in reported demand, client wins, margins, and productivity measures. EPAM says clients may use AI tools internally to create or modify applications, reducing reliance on outside providers. Gartner identifies keeping pace with AI and other technology developments as a risk. These issuer disclosures show why the issue merits scrutiny; they do not establish a universal outcome or a reliable forecast of displacement. EPAM 2025 Form 10-K; Gartner 2025 Form 10-K.
6. Read risk disclosures and cybersecurity information critically
Review risk factors for service interruptions, contract disputes, client credit, cybersecurity, privacy, intellectual property, employee availability, and regulatory compliance. Check whether the issuer reports incidents, litigation, remediation costs, customer losses, or insurance changes. Read cybersecurity disclosures together with risk factors and governance information, while recognizing that a description of controls does not prove incidents cannot occur.

EPAM discusses security and privacy exposures, including client requirements and possible effects on reputation, service delivery, and customer relationships. Gartner lists cybersecurity incidents and disruptions among its risks. TTEC’s 2024 Form 10-K describes security, privacy, and emerging-technology risks, and identifies client relationships, innovation, delivery capability, efficiency, pricing, brand, and financial strength as competitive factors. A risk disclosure identifies exposures the issuer considers relevant; it does not quantify how likely a loss is or show that one will occur. EPAM 2025 Form 10-K; Gartner 2025 Form 10-K; TTEC 2024 Form 10-K.
7. Review the balance sheet and capital allocation
Assess cash and liquidity against debt maturities, interest costs, leases, pension or other long-term obligations, and acquisition commitments. Consider share-based compensation and potential dilution, as well as buybacks, dividends, and the returns generated by acquired businesses. A company’s ability to fund operations and investments through a downturn can matter as much as its recent growth rate.
Gartner’s filing, for example, identifies debt obligations, acquisitions and integration, staffing, competition, and international currency exposure among company risks. These are prompts to check the specific issuer’s disclosures, not assumptions that each risk applies equally to every peer. Gartner 2025 Form 10-K.

Business quality and investment value are separate questions. Compare valuation using measures suited to the company, such as enterprise value relative to normalized operating earnings or free cash flow. Account for differences in growth, margins, capital intensity, and balance-sheet structure; do not treat a single multiple as a complete estimate of value.

Build conservative, base, and optimistic cases for growth and margins, and consider what cash generation each would imply. Before comparing companies, normalize for fiscal year, currency, acquisitions, and accounting definitions. Without a specific issuer, ticker, current share price, and valuation date, there is no stock-specific valuation or recommendation here.
A practical filing-based comparison
When comparing two or more companies, use the same fiscal periods and reconcile definitions before ranking them. A compact comparison should cover:
- Service mix and exposure to discretionary versus contracted work.
- Organic growth, customer concentration, retention, and the definitions used for bookings or backlog.
- Segment margins, utilization, and contract risk.
- Cash conversion, debt, and dilution.
- Talent, delivery footprint, and geographic exposure.
- AI positioning, supported by evidence of productivity or demand.
- Valuation relative to plausible normalized cash generation.
Use the latest filings for the companies you are evaluating: reporting periods, metrics, risks, and market prices can change, and figures from different issuers are not automatically comparable.
