Before opening an account, confirm in writing that the bank permits your specific crypto-related activity, check how transfers and reviews work, and verify what is—and is not—covered by deposit insurance. “Crypto-friendly” is not a regulated guarantee that a bank will accept every customer, exchange, or transaction. This guidance is based on U.S. sources; readers in other countries should check their local deposit-insurance scheme, banking regulator, and financial-crime rules.
1. Define exactly how you will use the account
“Crypto transactions” can mean very different things to a bank. Before comparing accounts, describe the activity you plan to conduct and whether it is personal or business use.
- Depositing money to or withdrawing money from a crypto exchange.
- Receiving fiat proceeds from a crypto sale, such as business revenue or personal funds.
- Paying a crypto-related business or receiving payments from one.
- Operating an exchange, money transmitter, or another crypto-related business.
- Using a bank service to hold crypto-assets in custody.
Note the counterparties, transfer direction and frequency, approximate amounts, relevant jurisdictions, and whether the funds are personal or business funds. For businesses, FinCEN’s 2005 MSB banking guidance says banks may seek information about services, markets, anticipated activity, and the purpose of the account.
2. Confirm the bank’s current policy for your activity
Ask the bank—not just an exchange or app—whether the exact account type permits your stated use and named counterparties. A bank may allow one type of crypto-related transfer while restricting another, and terms can differ between personal and business accounts.

Request the answer and applicable terms in writing, and keep a copy. Regulatory permission for banks to engage in an activity is not a promise that a particular customer’s transactions will be accepted. The FDIC’s March 28, 2025 clarification says FDIC-supervised institutions may engage in permissible crypto-related activities without prior FDIC approval if they manage risks and follow applicable law. The Federal Reserve, FDIC, and OCC’s January 5, 2023 joint statement says banking organizations are not prohibited or discouraged from serving a customer class or type where permitted by law or regulation. Neither statement requires a bank to serve every customer or transaction.
3. Find out what “FDIC insured” actually covers
Identify the insured bank that holds the deposit and the legal name under which the account is held. If a fintech or crypto company sits between you and the bank, ask whether your balance is a deposit at that bank or a non-bank product, and what conditions apply to the arrangement.

FDIC insurance protects eligible deposits at an insured bank if that bank fails. It does not insure crypto-assets or assets issued by non-bank crypto companies. An app’s claim that it offers access to an FDIC-insured bank does not mean crypto held in an exchange account, wallet, token, or custody service is insured. See the FDIC’s July 28, 2022 deposit-insurance fact sheet for the distinction.
4. Compare the account’s operating terms
Read the current account agreement and fee schedule for each candidate bank. Do not assume that crypto-related access means low fees, fast settlement, high limits, or uninterrupted service.

5. Check business compliance fit, if applicable
Not every crypto-related company has the same regulatory status. Whether a business is a money services business (MSB) depends on what it does and the requirements that apply; do not assume either that every crypto company is an MSB or that none is.

For an MSB relationship, FinCEN’s 2005 guidance describes banks assessing risk and checking information such as identity, registration when required, state or local licenses when applicable, and agent status where relevant. Be ready to explain your product, customers, markets, locations, expected transaction amounts and flows, and account purpose. A bank may request additional material, potentially including information about AML policies and controls, depending on its assessment.

If the bank offers to safeguard crypto-assets, evaluate that service as a separate product from checking or savings. Ask which assets and functions are included, who controls the keys, what records and reconciliations are maintained, what happens during an outage or insolvency, and which agreement governs the assets.

The banking agencies’ July 14, 2025 safekeeping statement discusses risk management for bank crypto safekeeping and says banks undertaking it must do so safely and soundly and comply with applicable law. It does not make a crypto asset equivalent to an insured bank deposit; the FDIC’s fact sheet states that crypto-assets are not FDIC-insured.
Compare banks on the same criteria
When assessing two or more banks, use the same proposed activity and counterparties for each comparison. A bank’s general marketing language is less useful than its account-specific policy and written terms.
Quick Recap
| What to compare | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Policy scope | Which activities are allowed, prohibited, or subject to review? Do rules differ for personal and business accounts? |
| Counterparties and payment support | Are your named exchanges or businesses supported? Which ACH, wire, card, or settlement routes are available, and when do transfers settle? |
| Account economics | What are the current monthly and transaction charges, minimums, and cash-management features? |
| Controls and continuity | What documentation can be requested? How are reviews handled? What do the support and account-restriction or termination terms say? |
| Protection and legal structure | Which insured bank holds the deposit, and in whose name? Is any wallet, exchange balance, token, or custody service a separate non-bank arrangement? |
| Business compliance fit | Do your registration or licensing status, expected volumes, markets, customer base, and AML documentation fit the bank’s requirements? |
