Before buying ether (ETH), compare the live bid and ask for the exact trading pair, inspect the sell orders available near the ask, and estimate the cost of executing your intended order size. A narrow spread is not proof that an exchange has enough depth for a large purchase, and neither spread nor depth is a complete measure of your total cost. Quotes and order books change quickly, so use timestamped data and check fees, funding costs, local availability and the order route before placing a trade.
What the spread tells you—and what it does not
The bid is the highest price a buyer is currently offering; the ask is the lowest price a seller is currently offering. The displayed bid-ask spread is the difference between those prices. To compare exchanges fairly, check the same ETH pair—such as ETH/USD—and record both quotes at the same time.
A tight spread can indicate that the best available buy and sell quotes are close together, but it says nothing by itself about how much ETH is available at those prices. A small order might execute near the ask while a larger one has to buy through several higher-priced levels. Quotes can also change before an order executes. The SEC’s general explanation of order execution discusses spreads and changing quotes in securities markets; it is useful for the basic execution concepts, not as a description of crypto-exchange obligations.
There is no single durable “current ETH spread” figure established here. Treat any spread you see as a live, venue- and pair-specific observation, not a market-wide constant.

How much ETH is available near the price?
For a buy, inspect the asks—the sell orders—near the current quote. For a sell, inspect the bids. Look at cumulative ETH quantity and, where available, the corresponding dollar value within price bands relevant to your planned order. A venue’s order book is only that venue’s displayed liquidity, not the entire global ETH market.
For example, a book may show enough ETH at the best ask for a small purchase but much less within a narrow price band for a larger one. If your order exceeds the quantity offered at the first level, it can consume asks at successively higher prices. The average price paid may then be worse than the initial quote.

Estimate slippage for your order size
Slippage or price impact describes how an execution price differs from the starting quote as an order interacts with available liquidity. Compare the estimated average fill for an order of your intended size with the starting quote. The estimate is meaningful only when you know the order direction, size, pair, venue and observation time; a historical figure for a sell is not a prediction for a buy.
TokenInsight Research’s Crypto Exchange Liquidity Report – March 2026 offers a dated example, not a current ranking. It sampled selected exchanges’ official APIs every 30 minutes, with 10 seconds of order-book-channel data at 100 ms intervals, from March 8–10, 2026 (UTC+8). In that sample, reported ETH spot slippage for sell orders was:

These are the report’s historical sell-side results for the stated sample and order sizes. They do not tell you what a buy order would cost now, and the sample does not establish a current exchange ranking. In the same report’s historical ETH spot-depth comparison, Binance led at the 0.03% and 0.05% bands, with Bitget next; that finding is likewise limited to the report’s sampled period and venues.
Choose an order type with the trade-off in mind
Marketable order
A market order, or an order priced to execute immediately, prioritizes execution. It may fill against multiple levels of the book, so the final average price can differ from the quote you saw when placing it.

Limit order
A limit order sets the worst price you are willing to accept. It can help prevent execution above your chosen buy limit, but the market may not reach that price and the order may remain unfilled. A limit price does not guarantee a better execution or a completed trade.

Spread and potential slippage are only parts of the cost. Check the exchange’s current trading-fee schedule and any costs for depositing funds, converting currencies, or withdrawing cash or ETH. Also check whether the venue’s basic “Buy” screen routes an order to the displayed order book or uses a different pricing method. Check access, product route and custody responsibilities
Confirm that the exchange serves your location, supports the ETH pair you want, and offers the order interface you plan to use. Ethereum.org’s guide to getting ETH notes that exchanges operate only in regions where they offer service, that availability can change, and that inclusion in its list is not an endorsement. ETH is Ethereum’s native cryptocurrency; it is used as digital money, to pay network transaction fees, and to help secure the network through staking.
Buying ETH directly is different from buying a spot ether exchange-traded product (ETP). In U.S. investor guidance dated September 9, 2024, the SEC describes spot bitcoin and ether ETPs as exchange-traded commodity trusts that hold the asset, not investment companies registered under the Investment Company Act of 1940—even where a product is colloquially called an ETF. An ETP may avoid some direct-platform and private-key handling steps, but it has sponsor fees and its own tracking, custody, volatility and underlying-market risks. The SEC also warns U.S. investors that bitcoin and ether are highly speculative and that spot crypto trading platforms may lack the oversight of registered intermediaries. Those statements are U.S. guidance from that date, not a determination of the legal status of a particular exchange in every jurisdiction.
If you choose direct ETH and self-custody, you take responsibility for securing the asset. A hardware wallet is an optional custody tool, not a requirement for buying ETH and not a way to improve exchange liquidity.
