Compare your total cost with the amount the recipient will actually receive, confirm the exact asset and network work at every step, and check the provider, local rules, redemption terms, and account-recovery arrangements. A token described as stable, fast, or low-cost does not establish that the whole transfer will be.
Define the route and the payout first
Start with the specific transfer, not a coin or app. Write down the sender’s country, the recipient’s country, how much the recipient needs and in which currency, and whether they need cash, a bank deposit, or another payout method. These details affect provider eligibility, local rules, conversion options, and whether the recipient can use the money.
Do not assume a service supports a route because it supports cryptocurrency generally. Confirm that the exact provider entity, asset, and payout method are available to both people in the relevant countries.
Compare the recipient’s net payout, not a headline fee
Ask two questions for the same transfer: how much will the sender pay in total, and how much will the recipient receive in the required currency after all conversions and cash-out? A low advertised fee does not by itself reveal the exchange-rate spread or the cost of turning the cryptocurrency back into usable money.

- Include the cost of buying the cryptocurrency and any purchase, withdrawal, transfer, or network charges.
- Check the exchange rate used at each conversion and whether an intermediary or payout provider adds a charge.
- Find out whether the recipient can cash out or use the asset directly, and include any fee or conversion needed to reach the requested payout.
- Compare the result with an available non-crypto transfer for the same sender outlay, recipient currency, payout method, and timing conditions.
Use current quotes for the exact corridor; do not rely on a generic claim about cost or speed. Official sources reviewed for this article do not establish current fees, rates, arrival times, or cash-out coverage for a particular route, coin, or provider. Those figures must be checked with the services being considered.
Confirm the asset, network, and recipient instructions
A token name alone is not enough to identify where a transfer will travel. The same or similar asset may be available on more than one network, and a recipient’s service may accept one version but not another. Before buying or sending, verify directly with the sending and receiving services:

- the exact asset and destination network;
- the recipient address and any required memo, tag, or other identifier;
- that the recipient’s service can receive that exact asset on that exact network; and
- how the recipient can convert or withdraw it in the destination country.
Follow the providers’ instructions rather than choosing a network based on its name or a general claim that it is inexpensive. The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) discusses risks involving virtual assets and stablecoins, but that material does not validate an individual token, address, network, or transfer.
Examine a stablecoin’s peg and redemption route
If the asset is a stablecoin, identify what it is intended to track, who issues it, and how a holder can actually redeem it. Review the reserve disclosures, redemption terms, eligibility rules, limits, and any intermediaries involved. A token’s name or stated target value does not establish that every holder can redeem it directly or on the terms they expect.

In an April 4, 2025 statement, the SEC Division of Corporation Finance discussed a particular class of covered stablecoins and described reserve assets, one-for-one redemption, and payment use. That staff statement is limited to the assets and circumstances it describes; it is not evidence that every asset called a stablecoin has those features or protections.
Check the provider and the rules for both countries
Identify the exact legal entity that will handle each part of the transfer, then check its status with the relevant authority in the sender’s and recipient’s jurisdictions. Ask what identity and beneficiary information it collects, what restrictions apply to the transfer or payout, and whether the service is authorized for this activity on this route. A general statement that a company is “regulated” does not answer those questions.

FATF’s July 16, 2026 update reports that 83% of surveyed jurisdictions had passed legislation implementing the Travel Rule, up from 73% in 2025. FATF also warns that implementation and supervision remain uneven: “Significant gaps remain in translating risk assessments into effective mitigation measures, operationalising licensing or registration frameworks in practice, identifying persons or entities conducting VASP activities, and ensuring effective risk-based supervision and enforcement.” These are global implementation figures and observations, not a finding about the safeguards or legal status of a particular provider or country.
In a separate July 2026 announcement, FATF described an alleged cryptocurrency investment-fraud network dismantled by Spain’s Guardia Civil in June 2025, involving approximately EUR 460 million from more than 5,000 victims. That case is not a remittance loss rate or a typical consumer outcome. It is a reason not to treat a cryptocurrency-related claim as proof that a service or counterparty is trustworthy.

Know who controls the assets and how you recover access
Find out whether the service or you control the private keys, where the assets are held during each stage, and what happens if an account is locked or a device or credentials are lost. Read the service’s recovery and dispute procedures before transferring funds; establish what evidence or identity checks they require and who can help if a transaction or payout goes wrong.
FATF’s 2026 update identifies peer-to-peer transactions through unhosted wallets as an area of risk. That supports scrutiny of custody and recovery arrangements; it does not mean a particular hardware wallet is required or that self-custody is automatically safer or preferable for a remittance.
Check the U.S. payment-stablecoin timing if it applies
If a U.S.-linked provider or payment stablecoin makes the GENIUS Act relevant to your decision, distinguish rules that are already in force from provisions that have not yet taken effect. SEC staff FAQs say the payment-stablecoin provisions take effect on the earlier of January 18, 2027, or 120 days after federal banking regulators issue implementing regulations. As of October 4, 2026, January 18, 2027 is in the future; because the earlier regulatory trigger could affect the timing, check the current status rather than treating future requirements as already effective. The FAQs also distinguish the description before the effective date from the statutory definition that applies after it.
Make the decision on the complete route
Cryptocurrency can make some payments easier, faster, or cheaper, but FATF’s sector-level description of possible benefits is not evidence that a particular transfer beats a conventional provider. Decide only after you can account for the sender’s total outlay, the recipient’s net amount and access to it, the conversion and transfer steps, network compatibility, provider status in both countries, and custody and recovery. If any link in that path is unclear, the amount the recipient will receive or their ability to access it is not yet established.
