Before you buy a hard-to-find graphics card from a third-party seller, verify three things: the exact card and its condition, the practical protection you will have if something goes wrong, and whether the card will work in your PC. Do not treat a low price, a strong seller rating, a serial number, or a claimed warranty as proof on its own. This checklist draws on U.S. Federal Trade Commission guidance and manufacturer policies; buyer protections and warranty terms vary by country, marketplace, seller, and model.
1. Confirm the exact card and its condition
A GPU family name is not enough to identify a graphics card. Different board-partner models can have different dimensions, power requirements, connectors, cooling designs, and revisions. Ask for the manufacturer, full model name or part number, revision if applicable, stated condition, included accessories, and confirmation that the photos show the actual card.

- Request clear, current photos of the card, including labels and serial number where appropriate.
- Compare the claimed model and revision with the board partner’s official product page.
- Read the full description and note whether the card is new, refurbished, used, open-box, or sold “as is.” These terms describe materially different conditions; check the marketplace’s definitions.
- Keep your questions and the seller’s answers in marketplace messages.
The FTC recommends reviewing multiple photos of the actual item and reading the full listing. Stock photos, a serial number, or a listing description cannot by themselves prove that the card is genuine or working.
2. Check the seller, return terms, and dispute process
Look at recent feedback and the seller’s contact information, but do not treat a star rating as proof: reviews and ratings can be fake or misleading. Check whether the seller gives specific, consistent answers about the card and its condition. Then read the current terms for this marketplace and listing before paying.

- Who handles a return or dispute: the seller, marketplace, or both?
- What evidence must you provide if the item is not as described?
- Who pays return shipping?
- How many days do you have to open a claim?
- Does the protection apply to this seller, item, and payment method?
Marketplace protections differ, and some have exclusions or deadlines. Save the listing and seller messages so you can refer to the original claims if there is a problem.
In the United States, the FTC says covered online marketplaces must disclose contact information for many high-volume third-party sellers of new or unused consumer products and provide a way to report suspicious conduct under the INFORM Consumers Act. Coverage is limited to sellers who meet the law’s criteria; disclosure is not a safety guarantee.

3. Pay through a channel that preserves recourse
Use the marketplace’s checkout and a payment method that gives you practical dispute options. The FTC warns that paying outside the platform can cost you marketplace protection and recommends avoiding hard-to-reverse methods such as gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency when a seller demands them.
Keep the listing, order confirmation, payment record, shipping details, and all messages. These records can help if the card arrives damaged, differs from the description, or never arrives.

4. Verify that the exact card fits your PC
Check the manufacturer’s specification page for the exact model and revision—not just the GPU family—and compare it with your computer’s parts. MSI’s official guidance recommends checking graphics-card and motherboard specifications.
- Case clearance: Compare the card’s length, height, and thickness with your case’s available space and any obstructions.
- Motherboard: Check the card’s interface and the motherboard’s supported slot.
- Power supply: Compare the manufacturer’s recommended PSU capacity with your actual unit; also consider its quality and age.
- Power connectors: Confirm the connector type and number, and whether your PSU has the required native connectors.
- Displays: Check the card’s video outputs against the monitors and cables you intend to use.
Specifications can vary even within one GPU family. For example, GIGABYTE lists the RTX 3080 EAGLE OC 10G revision 1.0 at 320 mm long, with a 750 W recommended PSU and two 8-pin power connectors. Those figures apply to that named model and revision, not to every RTX 3080.

5. Verify identity and warranty eligibility with the manufacturer
If warranty coverage matters to your decision, ask for the serial number and original proof of purchase, then check the manufacturer’s support process for the exact product and your region. MSI offers graphics-card serial identification and warranty-status inquiry. AMD explains how to identify the manufacturer and model of an installed AMD-based card using system information and subsystem vendor/device identifiers. These tools can help with identification or status checks; they do not certify a marketplace listing or guarantee the card’s condition.

Do not rely on a seller’s statement that “the warranty is included” without checking the applicable policy. Policies vary by manufacturer, model, region, and purchase channel. As examples, NVIDIA’s cited U.S. GeForce policy gives the original purchaser a three-year warranty period from purchase and says coverage does not extend to someone who acquires the product used. GIGABYTE describes its graphics-card warranty as limited and local, with regional differences. Check the current terms that apply where you live.

6. Compare the full cost and risk across listings
When comparing options, line up the same exact model and revision where possible. Consider the delivered cost alongside the evidence and recourse, not just the headline price.

A cheaper listing may bring more risk or no usable warranty, so price alone does not settle which offer is better.
7. Know when to walk away
Pause or walk away if the seller refuses current photos or basic model details, will not answer condition questions in writing, pressures you to pay off-platform, or offers an expensive branded card at an implausibly low price without a credible explanation. The FTC says unusually low prices on expensive brand-name goods can be a warning sign. A low price is not proof of fraud, but it is a reason to investigate. If you buy and the item differs from the listing, preserve your records and act within the marketplace’s claim deadline.
