Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Ask for a written, product-specific account of what changed—and evidence that the coating remains suitable for your application. An acquisition can change a product name, supplier entity, plant, formula, documents, or support arrangements independently of one another. Confirm each area for the exact product code, region, manufacturing site, and customer approval before relying on continuity.
Start with the product identity and transaction changes
Ask which legal entity now owns and supplies the coating, who will manufacture it, and whether your contract counterparty, ordering channel, invoice details, product name or code, or customer approvals have changed. Request a crosswalk linking every legacy name and code to its current ordering identifier, with effective dates and affected regions.
Keep identity separate from technical continuity. In a communication about its transfer of Sika’s European Industrial Coatings business, Sherwin-Williams said products were renamed within its naming system while the formulation remained unchanged. The statement also addressed raw materials, recipes, manufacturing process, expected quality, and technical data. It is an assurance about that specific transition, not a general guarantee for other products. Read Sherwin-Williams’ transition announcement.
Ask for the complete change history
Request a written record of changes already made and planned, including when each applies and which lots, sites, regions, or customers are affected. Cover at least:
#1 Best Overall
- Industrial Paint Coatings Engineered with Stainless Steel for Superior Protection
- Protects Against the Destruction and High-Cost of Corrosion
- Use on Food Processing Equipment Where USDA Approval for Incidental Food Contact is Required
- Incredible Aesthetic Appeal and Durable Finish
- 1 Can of Black Polyurethane Aerosol
- Formulation, ingredient levels, and raw-material or auxiliary-material suppliers.
- Manufacturing and filling locations, subcontractors, equipment, and process parameters.
- Packaging materials and processing materials.
- Specifications, certified properties, and test methods.
- Safety data sheets (SDS), technical data sheets (TDS), and other regulatory or customer documents.
Ask for the change-control procedure and the notice and approval terms that apply under your agreement. Do not assume that a supplier’s published rules apply to your contract. For example, PPG’s automotive supplier requirements list changes to raw-material suppliers, processes and equipment, formulations, manufacturing sites, certified-property specifications and test methods, SDS, and packaging. For covered changes, PPG requires at least 90 days’ notice and acceptance before changes that may affect characteristics, performance, or regulatory compliance. Its stated discontinuance notice periods are two years for colored pigments and one year for other covered materials. These are PPG automotive requirements, not universal industry rules. See PPG’s automotive supplier requirements.
Axalta’s EMEA supplier directives also identify manufacturing location or process, processing materials, formulation, packaging material, and auxiliary material as changes requiring attention; Axalta reserves the right to test a sample before a change takes effect. Confirm the requirements applicable to your relationship and product. See Axalta’s EMEA supplier directives.
Establish whether the coating still performs in your application
A statement that a product is “unchanged” or “equivalent” is not enough on its own. Ask the supplier to compare the currently approved product with the product you will receive, using the specifications and tests that matter to your process. Request applicable specification limits, certified properties, test methods, and batch or lot data.
Rank #2
For any testing, document the conditions that make results meaningful: substrate and preparation, application method, film build, cure conditions, line speed, environment, and acceptance criteria. If something changed, agree on samples, a controlled trial, who reviews the results, and whether your customer or regulator must approve the product before production use. PPG’s requirements say it evaluates proposed changes that may affect product characteristics, performance, or regulatory compliance, but the sources do not establish one test method for every coating and customer. Set the relevant methods and limits against your own specification. PPG’s Industrial Segment manual also describes advance Certificate of Analysis handling for specified raw-material deliveries. Read PPG’s Industrial Segment supplier quality manual.
Supplier-specific continuity statements can show what evidence to request, but cannot substitute for your own review. ACTEGA says that, in its site realignment, formulations were adopted 1:1, production technologies were compared and harmonized, starting-material suppliers were aligned, and product-related data remained the same. It also notes that packaging was partly reallocated, harmonized, or adapted. Treat those statements as applying to ACTEGA’s described transition, not as evidence about another supplier or SKU. Read ACTEGA’s FAQ.
Verify documents and approvals for your markets
Request the latest dated SDS, TDS, specifications, test certificates, regulatory statements, registrations or classifications, and customer-specific approvals for the exact product, destination market, and intended use. Ask the supplier to identify any revisions, changed classifications or ingredient disclosures, and approval or requalification requirements. A document that is current for one market or application may not establish approval for another.

PPG includes SDS changes among its notification subjects. Sherwin-Williams’ statement that technical data remained the same applied to the named business transition. Check current documents against your product, jurisdiction, and customer requirements rather than relying on a broad transition statement.
Get a supply-continuity plan
Ask which sites will manufacture and ship the product, whether capacity, allocation, lead times, or order cutoffs will change, and how the supplier plans to cover open orders and forecast demand. Request written answers on inventory or safety stock, constraints, outage contingencies, and notice if the grade is transferred, replaced, restricted, or discontinued. Identify a named escalation contact.

PPG’s automotive requirements call for adequate safety stock to cover outstanding purchase orders and specify discontinuance notice periods for covered materials. Those commitments apply within their stated supplier context; they are not automatically terms in another buyer’s agreement. Include the protection you need in your own written agreement.

Confirm who handles technical support and corrective action
Get the post-acquisition names and contact details for technical service, sales, quality, and regulatory support. Confirm local application support, urgent escalation arrangements, and who is authorized to approve a deviation. Ask how complaints are investigated and what root-cause and corrective-action information you will receive if a problem appears.
Axalta’s directives describe written notification and a deviation permit before delivery of nonconforming material, as well as complaint reports involving root-cause analysis and corrective or preventive actions. Treat these as examples of procedures to clarify with your supplier. A historical UK government-hosted document containing AkzoNobel’s response to a merger review discusses quality, reliability, safety, consistency, and technical assistance as customer considerations; it reflects that case, not a current market survey. Read the historical UK merger document.

Ask whether a suitable alternate product, production site, or supplier exists, and what requalification would involve. Compare candidates using the evidence that matters to your operation:
Best Value
- Industrial Paint Coatings Engineered with Stainless Steel for Superior Protection
- Protects Against the Destruction and High-Cost of Corrosion
- Use on Food Processing Equipment Where USDA Approval for Incidental Food Contact is Required
- Incredible Aesthetic Appeal and Durable Finish
- 3 Cans of Black Polyurethane Aerosol
- Specification compliance and performance under your application conditions.
- Transparency about formulation, production site, process, and change control.
- Regulatory and customer approvals for each relevant geography.
- Capacity, lead time, inventory, and discontinuance terms.
- Technical support and complaint response.
- Trial, line-change, qualification time, and operational costs or risks.
If an interruption would be costly, consider qualifying an alternate before one is urgently needed. A historical UK merger document describes dual- or multi-sourcing, including qualifying more than one supplier without necessarily buying from all of them, in the case it examined. That context does not establish that any alternate coating is suitable for your process; qualification must be product- and application-specific.
Put the answers into a decision record
For each affected product, record the supplier’s current identity and code, manufacturing site, change history, document revisions, test evidence, approval status, supply commitments, support contacts, and any open actions. Assign an owner and completion date for trials, customer approvals, or alternate-source qualification. The decision should be whether the product remains approved for your application, what conditions must be met before use, and what contingency is available if continuity fails.
