The headline refers to a February 20, 2025 meeting—not a meeting happening today. Apple CEO Tim Cook met President Donald Trump privately at the White House and later called it “great.” The public record does not show that the meeting produced a tariff exemption or a signed manufacturing agreement.
What happened at the White House?
Cook arrived at the White House shortly after 10 a.m. Eastern time and met Trump in the Oval Office. The meeting reportedly ended around 11:15 a.m. Cook then told Fox Business cameras that it had been a “great meeting,” according to contemporaneous coverage by 9to5Mac.
The meeting was private. No transcript or detailed official readout publicly established what the two men discussed, which means tariffs and manufacturing were important context rather than confirmed to be the meeting’s only—or principal—subjects.
Why Apple was under tariff pressure
Apple relied heavily on Asian manufacturing and suppliers, particularly in China, while also expanding assembly in India and other countries. U.S. tariffs on imported goods could increase costs, squeeze margins, complicate sourcing or eventually contribute to higher consumer prices.

Tariffs are generally collected on goods entering the country, not simply charged to a company as a special penalty. Their economic effect can be shared among importers, suppliers, retailers and customers. Moving assembly from China to India could reduce exposure to China-specific duties, but it would not eliminate tariff risk because imports from India could also be targeted by U.S. trade policy.
Did Trump give Apple a tariff exemption?
There is no public evidence in the February 20 report that he did. The available coverage did not identify a tariff rate, exemption, customs ruling or other binding concession agreed during the private meeting.

Later policy actions must be kept separate from that event. Reuters reporting said smartphones, computers and some other electronics were excluded from certain reciprocal tariffs, while separate China-related duties remained relevant. That was relief under a particular tariff program—not proof that Apple received a permanent, meeting-specific exemption.
A presidential comment about tariffs also is not the same as a formal change in law or customs treatment. Any claim of an exemption should identify the applicable executive action, agency notice or customs decision.

The $500 billion announcement four days later
On February 24, 2025, Apple announced plans to invest more than $500 billion in the United States over four years. The plan included a server factory in Texas, expanded facilities and manufacturing-related activity, and a stated goal of hiring 20,000 additional people, as reported by The Associated Press and CNN.
The announcement followed Cook’s White House visit, and Trump said Cook had made commitments about U.S. production. But the public evidence does not establish that the February 20 meeting alone caused the entire multiyear plan or that it was a direct quid pro quo for tariff relief.

What the pledge did—and did not—mean
- It covered servers, facilities, suppliers and other manufacturing activity, not a promise to assemble every iPhone in the United States.
- The 20,000 jobs were planned hires, not necessarily jobs already created.
- The announced spending was a commitment over four years, not proof that $500 billion had already been spent.
Why India became a flash point
Apple’s manufacturing remained concentrated in Asia even as the company diversified beyond China into India, Vietnam and Thailand. That diversification can lower dependence on one country, but it also requires qualified suppliers, trained workers, logistics capacity and years of investment.
In May 2025, Trump criticized Apple’s move toward India-based iPhone production and threatened a 25% tariff on iPhones made outside the United States. The episode illustrated the difference between reducing China exposure and eliminating import exposure: shifting assembly can change the country-specific risk without moving the whole supply chain to America.

What happened next?
April 2025: limited electronics relief
Some smartphones, computers and other electronics were excluded from certain reciprocal tariffs. Reuters’ report, carried by Investing.com, noted that other China-related duties still mattered. The exclusion therefore should not be described as a blanket or necessarily permanent Apple exemption.
August 2025: another $100 billion commitment
On August 6, 2025, Apple announced an additional $100 billion U.S. manufacturing commitment. The White House described the combined figure as $600 billion; the administration’s announcement is available at WhiteHouse.gov. The AP also covered the event at AP.org.
That figure represents announced commitments and planned investment, not necessarily completed expenditure. Later reporting still described most Apple production as occurring in Asia, despite the U.S. expansion.
What this means for iPhone buyers
More U.S. investment does not mean iPhones sold in America are immediately assembled domestically. Nor does a tariff exclusion under one program guarantee unchanged prices: duties can differ by country, product category and policy, and companies may adjust sourcing, pricing or margins in response.
- Domestic factories and suppliers may reduce some import exposure but can involve higher labor, construction and logistics costs.
- India and Vietnam diversification can reduce reliance on China while creating exposure to those countries’ own trade treatment.
- Assembly is only one stage of an iPhone’s global manufacturing chain.
What is confirmed—and what is not
| Question | Best-supported answer |
|---|---|
| Did Cook meet Trump? | Yes. They met privately at the White House on February 20, 2025. |
| Did Cook call it “great”? | Yes, according to Fox Business footage and contemporaneous reporting. |
| Was a tariff exemption announced? | No. The immediate report disclosed no exemption or final agreement. |
| Did Apple promise to build all iPhones in America? | No. The investment plans covered broader U.S. manufacturing and facilities while most production remained in Asia. |
| Was Apple’s later relief tied conclusively to this meeting? | No. Later tariff exclusions were separate policy actions and should be attributed to their specific programs. |
Bottom line
Tim Cook’s “great meeting” was a real February 20, 2025 White House encounter, but the phrase describes Cook’s reaction—not a disclosed tariff bargain. Apple subsequently announced $500 billion and later $600 billion in stated U.S. commitments, while continuing to manufacture most products in Asia and diversify into India and elsewhere. Any article using “today” for the meeting is using stale 2025 wording; in 2026, it should be presented as a historical event in an ongoing tariff and supply-chain dispute.
