Nvidia Replaced Intel in the Dow in 2024: What the 25-Year Shift Really Meant

Nvidia’s 2024 addition to the Dow and Intel’s removal after roughly 25 years reflected changing semiconductor leadership—but not a merger, delisting or automatic investment signal.

Nvidia joined the Dow Jones Industrial Average and Intel left it before trading opened on November 8, 2024. S&P Dow Jones Indices said the reshuffle would provide more representative semiconductor exposure. The decision reflected Nvidia’s rise during the artificial-intelligence boom and Intel’s weaker market position, but it was an index-composition change—not a merger, delisting or formal ranking of corporate quality.

What changed in the Dow?

S&P Dow Jones Indices announced the changes on November 1, 2024. NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ: NVDA) was added to the DJIA, while Intel Corporation (NASDAQ: INTC) was deleted. The changes took effect before the market opened on Friday, November 8, 2024. Sherwin-Williams was added in the same DJIA reshuffle, and Dow Inc. was removed. The official announcement is available from S&P Dow Jones Indices.

Company Ticker Action Effective date
NVIDIA NVDA Added to DJIA Before the open, November 8, 2024
Intel INTC Removed from DJIA Before the open, November 8, 2024
Sherwin-Williams SHW Added to DJIA Before the open, November 8, 2024
Dow Inc. DOW Removed from DJIA Before the open, November 8, 2024

“Ousts” is headline shorthand. Nvidia did not force Intel out or exchange assets with it; the index committee changed the Dow’s constituents. Intel’s departure ended roughly 25 years of membership, according to contemporaneous reporting by Ars Technica.

Why Nvidia was chosen

The official explanation

S&P said the revisions were intended to provide “more representative exposure” to the semiconductor industry. That is an index-design rationale, not a statement that Nvidia is universally a better company than Intel.

The market context

By late 2024, Nvidia had become a central supplier of graphics processors and accelerators used for AI training and inference. Data-center demand and generative-AI infrastructure had pushed its valuation and share performance sharply higher during that year. Nvidia also operates substantial gaming, professional-visualization, networking and software businesses; calling it only an “AI chipmaker” is incomplete.

Intel, meanwhile, was under pressure from manufacturing and process-technology delays, competition in CPUs and data-center products, and difficulty turning its AI-accelerator ambitions into significant sales. Ars Technica reported that Intel withdrew a 2024 sales target for its Gaudi AI chips and that period reporting expected a first annual loss since 1986. Those were 2024 developments and expectations, not current 2026 facts.

How the Dow actually works

The precise name is the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA). It contains 30 committee-selected U.S. companies and is designed to represent important parts of the American economy, not to rank every company or mirror the whole stock market.

The DJIA is price-weighted. A stock’s influence depends primarily on its share price, with a divisor adjusted for splits and other corporate actions. A company with a higher per-share price can therefore have more influence on the index than a company with a lower share price, even when the lower-priced company has a larger market capitalization. S&P provides the index and methodology information on its official DJIA page.

  • Military-grade components deliver rock-solid power and longer lifespan for ultimate durability. Compatibility: 348mm (13.7") length, 3.6 slots, 4.3 lbs. Confirm case clearance and slot spacing. GPU bracket included.
  • Protective PCB coating helps protect against short circuits caused by moisture, dust, or debris
  • 3.6-slot design with massive fin array optimized for airflow from three Axial-tech fans
  • Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads
Measure What it means How it relates to this change
Market capitalization Total value of a company’s outstanding shares Helped make Nvidia a prominent candidate, but does not determine Dow weights
Share price Price of one share Primary driver of a constituent’s DJIA influence
DJIA weighting Price weighting adjusted by the Dow divisor Determines Nvidia’s contribution after inclusion
S&P 500 weighting Market-cap weighting More directly reflects the influence of mega-cap companies

Consequently, Nvidia did not enter because an automatic formula declared it the largest semiconductor company, and its addition did not give the Dow Nvidia’s market-cap percentage. The S&P 500 is generally a more representative benchmark for broad U.S. large-cap equities.

What the change meant for investors

Index-tracking portfolios had to adjust

Funds and other products designed to track the DJIA generally had to buy Nvidia and remove Intel around the effective date. Index-linked derivatives and benchmark comparisons also used the new constituent list. The SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF Trust (DIA) is one example of a product intended to provide Dow exposure.

It was not a trading signal

  • Inclusion does not guarantee that Nvidia’s shares will rise.
  • Removal does not make Intel uninvestable or prove that its business is permanently impaired.
  • The reconstitution did not change either company’s earnings, products, factories, customers or strategy.
  • A short-term price move around rebalancing should not automatically be treated as a fundamental repricing.

DIA offers exposure to all 30 Dow constituents, not a focused Nvidia position. Investors seeking a whole-market portfolio, S&P 500 exposure or a concentrated semiconductor allocation would be choosing different risk profiles.

What Intel’s removal did—and did not—say

It marked a loss of representation

Intel had symbolized the era when CPU dominance and in-house manufacturing defined the U.S. chip industry. Its 2024 difficulties included weaker stock performance, manufacturing execution problems, competitive losses and pressure from Arm-based alternatives. Apple’s transition from Intel processors to its own Mac chips was part of the longer competitive backdrop.

It was not a corporate failure

Leaving the DJIA was not bankruptcy, a delisting, a trading halt or a restructuring. Intel remained a publicly traded semiconductor company outside the 30-stock index. Its eventual prospects depended on products, manufacturing, foundry investment, capital and execution—not on membership in one benchmark.

Why the reshuffle was symbolically important

The change made an industry transition visible. Nvidia represented the rapid expansion of accelerated computing, data centers and AI workloads; Intel represented a legacy of CPU-centered computing and integrated manufacturing. Putting Nvidia into one of the best-known U.S. indexes while removing Intel made that shift easy to see.

The symbolism has limits. The DJIA’s small, price-weighted structure means one constituent change is not a complete verdict on the semiconductor sector, the U.S. economy or either company’s long-term technological position.

Common misconceptions

  • “Nvidia bought Intel.” No. S&P Dow Jones Indices changed the index constituents.
  • “Nvidia was selected because it had the largest market capitalization.” Market prominence mattered, but the Dow is not market-cap weighted.
  • “Intel stopped being a major company.” It left the DJIA but remained a listed semiconductor business.
  • “The Dow represents the entire U.S. economy.” It represents 30 committee-selected companies.
  • “Nvidia’s inclusion guarantees continued outperformance.” Index membership is not an investment recommendation.

How to interpret the event now

Because the effective date was November 8, 2024, this is a historical constituent change rather than a new 2026 development. Its lasting importance is interpretive: S&P judged that the Dow needed a more representative semiconductor presence, and Nvidia’s AI-driven rise made it the obvious contemporary symbol of that shift. The decision captured changing market leadership without determining either company’s future.
