U.S. prosecutors and the Securities and Exchange Commission brought separate cases in 2024 involving allegations against Gautam Adani and other Adani Group executives. The criminal indictment alleged a bribery scheme tied to Indian solar contracts and investor-facing misrepresentations; the SEC filed a civil securities case over Adani Green notes. In May 2026, the Associated Press reported a proposed path to end each case, but the final court dispositions have not been verified here. The allegations are not findings of guilt.

What did the U.S. indictment accuse Gautam Adani of?

On November 20, 2024, the U.S. Department of Justice announced that a five-count indictment had been unsealed in the Eastern District of New York, in federal court in Brooklyn. Prosecutors alleged that Gautam Adani and other business executives agreed to pay more than $250 million in bribes to Indian government officials from approximately 2020 to 2024 to secure solar energy supply contracts. DOJ said the contracts were projected to produce more than $2 billion in after-tax profits over about 20 years. Both figures are allegations or projections attributed to prosecutors, not established findings. DOJ’s announcement and its description of the alleged amounts set out the government’s claims.

The DOJ also alleged that Adani, Sagar Adani and Vneet Jaain conspired to misrepresent anti-bribery practices and conceal the alleged scheme while raising financing. Prosecutors cited loans totaling more than $2 billion and bond offerings exceeding $1 billion marketed to investors in the United States and elsewhere. The indictment further alleged that other defendants obstructed the government’s investigation. These are accusations in a criminal pleading, not adjudicated facts. The DOJ release describes the financing and obstruction allegations.

The DOJ stated that defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. An indictment sets out prosecutors’ charges; it does not itself establish that the alleged conduct occurred.

What is the separate SEC case?

The SEC filed a civil action on November 20, 2024, against Gautam and Sagar Adani. Its complaint alleged securities antifraud violations connected with Adani Green notes offered to U.S. investors and sought injunctions, monetary penalties and other relief. Unlike the DOJ indictment, this was a civil securities enforcement action. A complaint is the regulator’s allegation, not a court finding. The case is identified as SEC case 24-cv-08080.

Have the Adani cases been dropped or settled?

As of the latest reporting described here, the reported developments were not confirmed final court orders. The criminal and civil matters also had different procedural steps:

Matter May 2026 report What is established here
DOJ criminal case, United States v. Adani et al., docket 24-CR-433 AP reported that DOJ asked the court to dismiss the charges, with the defendants’ consent. The judge still had to approve the request, according to AP. A final dismissal order was not verified. DOJ’s case page identifies the matter and docket.
SEC civil case, 24-cv-08080 AP reported that the SEC agreed to a proposed settlement, including proposed civil penalties of $6 million for Gautam Adani and $12 million for Sagar Adani, with no admission of guilt. The final entered judgment and any later changes were not verified. The amounts are AP’s account of proposed terms, not a confirmed final judgment.

AP also reported that Adani Group denied the allegations and called them baseless. A request for dismissal is not the same as a judge’s order, and a proposed settlement is not the same as an entered judgment. The DOJ criminal case and SEC civil action should therefore be tracked separately rather than described as one case with a single outcome.

How to read the allegations and reported developments

  • Bribery: the alleged payments concerned Indian government officials and solar energy supply contracts; the alleged amount and projected profits remain attributed to DOJ.
  • Investor disclosures: prosecutors alleged misrepresentations about anti-bribery practices in connection with financing, while the SEC separately alleged securities fraud involving notes offered to U.S. investors.
  • Legal status: charges and complaints state allegations. The reported DOJ dismissal request and proposed SEC settlement do not establish final outcomes without the relevant court orders.
