The correspondence, as reported from the leaked cache, shows that some Sony executives privately criticized its script and cut before release. It does not prove executives knew the film would fail commercially: the email record also includes earlier enthusiasm, and the contemporaneous box-office forecast was uncertain.
Which Bradley Cooper and Emma Stone film was it?
It was Aloha, released theatrically in the United States on May 29, 2015. Sony describes it as a comedy, drama, and romance: Bradley Cooper plays a military contractor who returns to Honolulu, reconnects with an old love played by Rachel McAdams, and falls for an Air Force watchdog played by Emma Stone. Sony’s film page lists the movie as PG-13 and available on digital, Blu-ray, and DVD.
The production began under the title Deep Tiki. The Daily Beast reported that Sony green-lit the project in 2008 and filming began in September 2013, after rewrites. The title eventually became Aloha.
What did the leaked Sony emails say?
In a June 2, 2015 account based on the leaked email cache, The Daily Beast reported that Amy Pascal, then Sony Pictures Entertainment president and co-chair, used Crowe’s film as an example of a project she considered a failure in a November 13, 2014 email to senior staff. The outlet quoted her criticism of the screenplay: “I’m never starting a movie again when the script is ridiculous and we all know it.” This is a reported excerpt from the leaked correspondence, not an original email reproduced here.

The emails described in that account also document disputes over the cut, reshoots, screening plans, and whether the film was ready for release. In October 2014, Crowe reportedly wrote to Pascal and producer Scott Rudin: “Been chasing everybody’s notes for a year, most of them conflict with each other.” The exchange points to a difficult creative process; criticism of a script or edit is not the same thing as a documented prediction that ticket sales would be poor.
The correspondence was not uniformly negative
The Daily Beast’s chronology includes warm messages between Pascal and Crowe in November 2013 and an enthusiastic note from Cooper. Cooper later sought reactions to early cuts. Crowe’s March 31, 2014 note was reportedly positive about some performances, while Pascal’s message the following day raised concerns about story, tone, and length. The record therefore shows shifting reactions over time, rather than universal certainty from the outset that the film would fail.

Did Sony executives predict a box-office failure?
The reported emails establish private concern about the film’s creative elements and readiness, but the cited reporting does not establish that executives accurately foresaw its commercial outcome. A pre-release story from TheWrap on May 27, 2015 quoted BoxOffice.com senior analyst Phil Contrino expecting a low-teens opening and saying he did not think the film had recovered from the leaked-email publicity. TheWrap also said the effect on moviegoers was hard to assess. That was an analyst’s forecast, not a studio guarantee or proof that the leak caused a particular result.
How did Aloha perform, and what do the numbers mean?
Box Office Mojo lists the following 2015 release figures. The worldwide gross was below the reported production budget, but those two figures alone do not show whether the film made or lost money overall.

Stone’s casting as Allison Ng became a public controversy. In a post-release letter reproduced by Vanity Fair, Crowe apologized to people who found the choice odd or misguided: “I offer you a heart-felt apology to all who felt this was an odd or misguided casting choice.” Crowe said he had written the character as one-quarter Hawaiian, with a half-Chinese father, based on a red-headed local. That explains his stated intent; it does not settle the criticism of the casting.
