The National Pork Board introduced Real Pork in August 2020 as a master-brand strategy built around authenticity, flavor and the farm-to-fork story. Its first major consumer concept, “Pork as a Passport,” was planned to connect pork with globally inspired food and cultural exploration. The launch coverage describes the Board’s intentions and planned work—not verified campaign results or its current status.
What Real Pork meant at launch
Real Pork was intended to give the National Pork Board a common way to present pork to consumers. The strategy centered on three themes: where pork comes from, how it tastes, and the people and stories connecting farms to meals. Angie Krieger, then the Board’s vice president of domestic marketing, described the goal as telling the “farm to fork story in a way we never have before.”
The Board said it had developed the concept before the COVID-19 pandemic, while pandemic-era shifts in buying and cooking accelerated the effort. Krieger also said consumers were “questioning what they can trust” amid a crowded information environment and wanted new food experiences after months of preparing meals at home. Those are launch-era explanations of consumer sentiment, not findings from a cited survey.
How the strategy was meant to reach consumers
Farm-to-fork authenticity
Farmer and farm stories were meant to make the origins of pork more visible and support the Board’s emphasis on authenticity and transparency. Sustainability messaging was also associated with the strategy in launch coverage; the reports do not provide a specific measurement or claim of sustainability performance.

Flavor and cooking inspiration
The Board also aimed to foreground flavor and give people ideas for meals. At launch, the strategy was framed partly as a response to consumers seeking new food experiences. The coverage does not establish that the campaign changed cooking habits or sales.
Cultural exploration: “Pork as a Passport”
The Board planned to introduce Real Pork to consumers in September 2020 with “Pork as a Passport,” a concept presenting pork as a protein used in culturally varied dishes. Planned elements included globally inspired recipes, modern food photography, videos with U.S. and international chefs, and connections between pig farmers and global chefs. The concept also included a family psychologist discussing family meals, social media influencers, and multicultural street food through an effort called Menu Urbano.

The launch reports describe a strategy and its intended campaign, not a measured case study. They say pork purchases had “surged” during the pandemic, but provide no sales figure, named statistical study or evidence that Real Pork caused any sales change. They also do not establish the campaign’s later execution, measurable impact, whether its landing page remains active, or its status today.
For readers evaluating the announcement, the distinction is important: Real Pork was presented as a long-term brand approach, while “Pork as a Passport” was a planned consumer-facing expression of it. The cited launch coverage supports what the Board announced in 2020, not a claim about current marketing activity or results.
