What the Enterprise Ethereum Alliance Set Out to Build in 2017

The Enterprise Ethereum Alliance launched in 2017 to coordinate standards and open-source work for enterprise Ethereum applications on both public and permissioned networks.

The headline refers to the 2017 launch of the Enterprise Ethereum Alliance (EEA), a corporate collaboration to develop shared standards and a reference architecture for Ethereum-related applications. It did not announce one new, universally shared “enterprise Ethereum” blockchain: the EEA’s stated scope covered applications on both public Ethereum and private, permissioned networks.

What happened in February 2017?

On February 28, 2017, the EEA announced an effort to develop industry standards and facilitate open-source collaboration. Its launch announcement described “EntEth 1.0” as a reference architecture for applications built on Ethereum-related technology. The EEA’s launch announcement said the framework was intended to support both public, permissionless Ethereum and private, permissioned Ethereum blockchains.

IEEE Spectrum reported that more than 30 companies had joined by the formal launch, naming Intel, Microsoft, J.P. Morgan, and Accenture among the participants. That is a figure reported in 2017, not a current membership count. IEEE Spectrum’s contemporaneous coverage described the corporate initiative as work on a private version of Ethereum, but the alliance’s own announcement makes clear that its stated scope also included public Ethereum.

Did the companies build a separate Ethereum blockchain?

Not as a single alliance-wide network, based on the launch announcement. The EEA described shared standards, open-source cooperation, and a reference architecture—not the creation of one new blockchain that every member had to use. Organizations could apply Ethereum-related technology in different settings, including public networks and private, permissioned environments.

That distinction matters: “enterprise Ethereum” can refer to common standards, software or applications used by organizations, or a particular network deployment. Those are related ideas, but they are not interchangeable. The EEA’s announcement did not establish that all enterprise deployments would use the same architecture or that the initiative was intended to replace public Ethereum.

Why did enterprises care about standards and permissioned networks?

The launch materials associated enterprise use with concerns including security, privacy, confidentiality, scalability, and interoperability. Shared standards and a reference architecture were intended to help organizations collaborate around common technical approaches rather than rely on a single company’s proprietary blockchain product.

A permissioned network limits participation or validation to approved parties, while public Ethereum is permissionless. The choice affects more than access: organizations must consider governance, confidentiality, performance needs, interoperability, and whether an application benefits from a shared public network or a restricted consortium environment. The 2017 announcement identifies the public/private distinction and several enterprise concerns, but it does not provide a universal technical comparison or declare one environment best for every use.

What is the Enterprise Ethereum Alliance today?

The EEA currently describes itself as a member-led nonprofit focused on institutional and enterprise Ethereum, including standards, intelligence, and collaboration. It says it was founded in 2017. Its current organizational description is available on the EEA About page.

The alliance’s insights archive shows continuing work on institutional Ethereum, privacy, infrastructure, tokenization, and adoption. It lists a privacy working group announcement in February 2026 and a privacy report in May 2026. This indicates that privacy remains an active topic; it does not establish one privacy solution as universally adopted.

For a present-day institutional perspective beyond the alliance, the Ethereum Foundation published a primer for governments and institutions on July 1, 2026. It frames Ethereum as public programmable infrastructure and discusses institutional deployment choices. That is current context, not evidence of what the EEA had completed at launch in 2017.
