Sheffield Wednesday entered administration in October 2025, so this is no longer hypothetical. Under the EFL’s standard rule, a club entering an insolvency event is deducted 12 points; the timing of the event determines when the deduction counts. Wednesday’s total of 18 points of deductions in 2025/26 also included a separate disciplinary case. When the club exited administration in May 2026, the EFL Board chose not to impose a further 15-point deduction, but set a two-season budget restriction and required registrations to follow an agreed business plan.
What happened to Sheffield Wednesday?
On 24 October 2025, the EFL announced that administrators had been appointed to Sheffield Wednesday FC and the company that owned Hillsborough. The EFL said the administration triggered an automatic 12-point deduction and that the Championship table would be updated immediately. EFL statement, 24 October 2025.
On 19 December 2025, the EFL said Wednesday had accumulated 18 points of deductions in 2025/26: 12 for administration and six arising from separate Independent Disciplinary Commission proceedings relating to 2024/25. The EFL also said a separate Club Financial Review Panel case concerning payment obligations had resulted in no further points deduction. It planned to agree a business plan with the administrators for the club’s exit. EFL statement, 19 December 2025.
On 2 May 2026, the EFL confirmed that a consortium led by Arise Capital Partners LLC had acquired the club’s assets and that Wednesday had met the League’s requirements to cease being regarded as in administration. The Board used its discretion under the EFL Insolvency Policy to decide that a further 15-point exit deduction would not be appropriate. Instead, it imposed a budget restriction for the next two seasons and required new player registrations to comply with an agreed business plan. EFL statement, 2 May 2026.

How the EFL’s standard 12-point rule works
Regulation 12 of the 2025/26 EFL Handbook sets out the insolvency process and its sporting sanction. A club must promptly notify the EFL if it receives formal notice of, is considering, takes, or suffers an Event of Insolvency. The League may require the club and a proposed officeholder to meet with it to discuss the cause, funding needs, likely duration, creditor position and potential exit strategies. 2025/26 EFL Handbook, Regulation 12.
When a club becomes subject to or suffers an Event of Insolvency, Regulation 12.2 provides for a 12-point deduction. When that deduction applies depends on the date of the insolvency event:

- Before 5pm on the fourth Thursday in March during the playing season: the deduction applies in that season.
- After that March cutoff during the playing season: if the club would otherwise be relegated at the end of the season, the deduction is deferred; if it would otherwise remain in the division, it applies in that season and could cause relegation.
- Outside the playing season: the club starts the next season on minus 12 points.
The exact effect on a club’s league position therefore depends on when insolvency occurs and, for a late-season event, where the club would finish without the deduction.
Why insolvency does not always mean another 12 points
The 12-point rule concerns a club entering an insolvency event. It does not mean that every later stage of the same restructuring automatically triggers another full deduction. The EFL regulations provide for one 12-point set where a club or group undertaking enters more than one insolvency procedure as part of the same process of compromising creditors—for example, administration followed by a Company Voluntary Arrangement. The deduction is applied from the first event.

A different issue arises if an insolvency event involves a group undertaking rather than the club itself. In that case, the EFL Board has power to impose a 12-point deduction. It must consider the circumstances, competition integrity and continuity, the relationship between the club and the group undertaking, and relevant law.
Can a club appeal the 12-point deduction?
The appeal route in Regulation 12 is narrow; it is not a general appeal based on fairness or hardship. To succeed, the club must prove, on the balance of probabilities, all of the following:

- A material loss of club income was the dominant and effective cause of the insolvency.
- That loss directly resulted from a force-majeure event.
- The club and its officials could not have avoided insolvency through cost reductions or other measures within their control.
If the test is met, the appeal panel can uphold, reduce or set aside the deduction.

Points are only one possible consequence. The EFL says serious concerns about a club’s financial health may prompt an enforced business plan, while non-compliance with financial regulations may lead to a player-registration embargo. The framework varies by division and season: the EFL says Championship Squad Cost Rules applied from 2026/27. Wednesday’s two-season budget restriction and business-plan condition were specific terms of its May 2026 exit, not an automatic package that applies identically to every club.
