What the CRN 2026 MSP 500 Is—and What It Means for Buyers

CRN’s 2026 MSP 500 is an annual recognition list of North American managed service providers (MSPs) and managed security service providers (MSSPs), organized into three categories: MSP Elite 150, MSP Pioneer 250 and Managed Security 100. It is useful for discovering providers and understanding how the channel is changing, but it is not a single 1-to-500 ranking or a guarantee that a listed company is right for your business.

What the CRN 2026 MSP 500 recognizes

CRN published “Managed Services On The Rise: The CRN 2026 MSP 500” on February 11, 2026. The annual program recognizes North American providers delivering managed IT and security services. CRN describes its focus as innovation, growth, service portfolios and executives’ outlook for the year. The feature article offers examples and industry context; the ranking page contains the searchable list.

The 500 places are divided among three groups, not arranged as a unified best-to-worst ladder. The visible CRN pages explain the categories and list purpose but do not provide a detailed scoring formula, weighting model, audited revenue table or customer-satisfaction methodology. Treat inclusion as recognition and a discovery signal—not as independent proof of service quality, security maturity, compliance, financial health or customer fit.

How the three categories differ

Category Entries Typical customer focus What the category signals
MSP Elite 150 150 Primarily midmarket and enterprise A broad managed-services portfolio spanning on-premises and off-premises capabilities.
MSP Pioneer 250 250 Primarily small and midsize businesses (SMBs) Managed services are central to the provider’s business model.
Managed Security 100 100 Organizations seeking managed security services Expertise in cloud-based security services; includes providers operating in the MSSP space.

The categories describe orientation and capabilities, not relative superiority. An SMB-focused Pioneer 250 provider may suit a 75-person company better than a provider oriented toward complex multinational environments. Likewise, the security category is the specifically security-focused group; not every company elsewhere on the list is necessarily an MSSP.

Who is on the list, and how to find them

CRN’s searchable ranking page provides company and category fields and links to prior editions dating back to 2014. Its feature article presents a sampling rather than a substitute for the complete directory. CRN mentions Net at Work, AHEAD, Aqueduct Technologies, Blue Mantis and NWN as examples of companies expanding managed-services businesses organically or through acquisitions. Being named in narrative coverage, appearing in a survey discussion, and appearing in the full ranking are distinct forms of mention; check the ranking page to confirm a company’s category.

NWN separately describes itself as a full-stack managed technology provider across areas including AI, digital workplace, customer experience, managed devices, cybersecurity, public safety, connectivity and cloud. Those are company claims, not independently verified performance measures. The same caution applies to provider descriptions generally: verify the specific service, scope and evidence directly with the vendor.

Why organizations are turning to managed services

CRN’s feature points to several pressures behind adoption: constraints on capital spending, expectations for reliable IT operations, multi-cloud complexity, business transformation, infrastructure modernization, shortages of skilled IT workers, demand for cybersecurity support and interest in reaching newer technologies faster. It also identifies AI as an opportunity: customers may want its benefits without taking on all of the work of selection, deployment, security and governance.

Rank #2

  • High Quality Heavy Duty Vegn Leather Brief Case with Black Gift Box, perfect for any business professional

These are drivers, not proof that every organization is outsourcing more or that every provider benefits equally. “Managed services” is not one standard package. Depending on the contract, it may cover endpoint management, help desk, cloud operations, backup, network management, security monitoring, compliance support, applications, strategic IT leadership or a broader outsourced IT operating model. A provider managing one layer is not automatically a replacement for an internal IT department.

How the MSP role is changing

CRN’s coverage describes a move beyond basic hands-on technical work toward advisory, governance and ongoing accountability. Blue Mantis executive Adam Caponigro points to roles such as client-success managers, security advisers, technical account managers and service-desk leaders as part of delivering consistent outcomes. In practical terms, a buyer may now expect planning, reporting and business alignment alongside ticket resolution.

  • Accountability: Clarify which outcomes the MSP owns, which remain with your staff, and how performance is reported.
  • Security integration: Determine whether security is part of routine IT operations or a separate service with its own scope and response obligations.
  • Growth through acquisition: Acquisitions can add skills, customers and geographic reach, but may also create risks around staff retention, tool consolidation, contract changes and service continuity.

What AI can mean in an MSP relationship

AI can refer to different things, and CRN’s feature does not establish that all 500 listed providers offer comparable AI capabilities. Distinguish between an MSP using AI internally to improve operations and a provider delivering AI implementation or administration to customers.

  • Customer-facing work: Readiness assessments, data and identity preparation, cloud optimization, application deployment, access controls, governance policies, cost monitoring and ongoing administration of models, agents or workflows.
  • Internal operations: Ticket triage, alert correlation, reporting, script generation and service-desk automation. These uses may improve an MSP’s workflow, but do not by themselves demonstrate that it can safely deploy or govern customer AI systems.

Ask what the provider actually does, what data its tools can access, who reviews automated actions, how changes are controlled, and how customer information is handled. AI capability claims are not interchangeable with cybersecurity or governance expertise.

Market forecasts are estimates, not the value of the list

CRN cites two global market estimates from different research firms. Their differing totals and periods make them useful as context for forecasts—not as directly comparable measurements or a calculation of revenue represented by the North American MSP 500.

Research firm, as cited by CRN Estimate and forecast How to read it
Fortune Business Insights $330.4 billion for 2025; forecast of $370.5 billion for 2026; projected 14.8% compound annual growth rate to $1.12 trillion by 2034. A forecast based on that firm’s market definition and assumptions; not an audited result for CRN-listed providers.
Grand View Research $401.2 billion for 2025; projected 9.9% compound annual growth rate to $847.4 billion by 2033. A separate firm’s estimate and forecast, with its own definitions and period.

Both are global estimates, while CRN’s recognition list focuses on North American providers. Different definitions of “managed services,” coverage and forecasting assumptions can produce different market totals. Neither figure establishes the size, revenue or growth rate of the CRN 500.

How buyers can use the list to evaluate providers

Use the list to discover candidates, then compare the service each one will actually deliver. Category fit can help frame the search, but does not replace a proposal review, reference checks or contract due diligence.

  1. Define the job. List the systems and outcomes you need covered: devices, help desk, cloud, identity, networks, backup, security monitoring, compliance, applications, strategic planning or AI-related work. Mark what your internal team will retain.
  2. Check operating coverage. Ask about business-hours or 24/7 support, time zones, on-site response, remote-only service, dedicated versus pooled technicians, escalation rules and named technical account management.
  3. Verify security responsibilities. Find out who investigates alerts, who can take action during an incident, whether monitoring is performed in-house or through a third party, and what vulnerability, identity-hardening and incident-response services are included. Request evidence for relevant controls and ask about subcontractors.
  4. Compare service commitments and costs. Review service-level agreements, exclusions, onboarding and project fees, after-hours charges, licensing markups, contract length, renewal increases and termination terms. Pricing may be per user, per device, bundled or otherwise structured; compare the full scope rather than a headline rate.
  5. Protect access and portability. Confirm who owns customer data, how logs and documentation can be exported, whether the provider can work with your existing tools, and what happens to licenses and administrative access when the contract ends.
  6. Test fit and resilience. Ask for relevant customer references, industry experience, financial and ownership context, acquisition history, staffing continuity and a plan for supporting your expected growth. For AI work, review data-handling, access-control, acceptable-use and governance policies.

Do not infer from CRN recognition that a provider offers the lowest price, guaranteed satisfaction, regulatory compliance, a particular security standard or a good match for your environment. A large enterprise-oriented provider may offer broader coverage and specialization at greater cost or with less flexibility for a small company; an SMB-focused provider may be more approachable but lack global coverage or deep expertise for a complex estate.

What MSP leaders can take from the 2026 list

For MSP executives, the list is an industry map rather than a valuation or acquisition ranking. CRN’s examples of organic and acquisition-led expansion point to a competitive environment in which breadth, specialization and the ability to integrate services matter. Providers assessing their own position can examine recurring-revenue quality, service-line margins, automation and remediation rates, ticket volumes, customer concentration, churn, security-service attachment, dependence on project work, cloud and AI expertise, documentation and acquisition integration.

A larger catalogue alone does not guarantee better delivery. Growth through acquisition can add capability, but retaining staff, aligning security controls, integrating service desks and tools, and preserving customer support all affect whether the expanded business works as promised.

Bottom line: treat the MSP 500 as a starting map

The CRN 2026 MSP 500 helps readers see how providers are grouped and why managed IT and security services are drawing attention. Its categories can guide discovery, while the lack of a published detailed scoring methodology on the visible CRN pages limits what readers should infer from inclusion. Use it to build a shortlist, then choose on documented scope, verifiable capability, contract terms and fit—not the recognition alone.
