Sony’s latest verified sales figure for ASTRO BOT is 1.5 million estimated global sell-through units as of November 3, 2024. That number does not, by itself, confirm the September 2024 claim that a sales report was “bad news” for the game: the comparison behind that headline is not established by the available sources.
What Sony’s sales figure says
In its FY2024 second-quarter supplemental results, published November 8, 2024, Sony Group Corporation listed ASTRO BOT as a PlayStation 5 first-party software title with 1.5 million global cumulative sell-through units as of November 3, 2024. Sony describes first-party software sell-through figures as estimates and notes that the table excludes add-on content.

Sell-through refers to units sold to customers, not units shipped to retailers. The figure is global and cumulative through the stated date; it is not a country-specific retail-chart result, revenue total, profit figure, or sales target.
What the September “bad news” headline does—and does not—establish
The September 12, 2024 Game Rant entry titled “Sales Report is Bad News for Astro Bot” is identified in a reference list, but the linked article could not be accessed. The report it cited and the comparison it made therefore remain unverified here. A later global cumulative figure from Sony cannot establish what an earlier report measured or whether its comparison was fair.

To assess an “underperformance” claim, the underlying figures would need to be compared on the same basis: geography, physical or digital coverage, units or revenue, full-game sales or bundles, and the length of the tracking period. Launch-week results should not be treated as equivalent to lifetime cumulative sales. No specific rival game, regional chart, or target can be confirmed from the accessible evidence.

ASTRO BOT launched for PS5 on September 6, 2024, according to Gematsu’s report on Sony’s announcement. Gematsu also reported Sony’s finding that 37% of buyers had not purchased other first-party software in the previous two years. That describes buyers’ recent purchasing history; it is not a sales target, profitability measure, or proof that the game succeeded or failed financially.
