The “$6 trillion” in the May 2025 headline was not money waiting to enter Bitcoin. It was the approximate market capitalization Bitcoin would imply at a price of $300,000 per coin. The headline referred to traders buying June call options at that strike—a speculative position, not a forecast or assurance that Bitcoin would reach it.
What did the $6 trillion figure mean?
In its May 21, 2025 article, Forbes described June Bitcoin call options with a $300,000 strike price and connected that price to an implied market capitalization of roughly $6 trillion. Market capitalization is a per-coin price multiplied by the number of coins counted in the calculation. It is a valuation measure, not a pool of cash that must be invested to produce that price.
So the headline’s “earthquake” was a dramatic description of a possible price scenario. The article did not report that $6 trillion had been invested, was queued to buy Bitcoin, or would necessarily flow into the market.
What did the options activity show?
Forbes reported that June $300,000 Bitcoin calls were the second most popular calls on Deribit after $110,000-strike calls, citing data compiled by Amberdata and seen by Bloomberg. It quoted Greg Magadini, Amberdata’s director of derivatives, on dealer positioning: “If we look at dealer positioning on Deribit for bitcoin, we see dealers being short a lot of gamma $110,000 as traders are buying options for new all-time highs.”

A call option gives its buyer the right, but not the obligation, to buy an asset at a specified strike price under the contract’s terms. Buying a call can express a bullish view, but a heavily traded strike is not a dependable forecast. It shows activity around a possible outcome; it does not establish that traders broadly expect that outcome, that the price will get there, or how much anyone will ultimately profit or lose. The reported dealer-positioning interpretation is also not evidence of a future price move.
What price context did the headline use?
The figures in the Forbes article describe May 2025, not today’s market. It said Bitcoin had risen more than 30% from April lows near $75,000 and was approaching its then-record level around $110,000. The $110,000 figure also appeared as a call-option strike in its discussion of Deribit activity; it was not the $300,000 strike behind the $6 trillion calculation.

How to read the headline without confusing a scenario for a forecast
- Market capitalization: roughly $6 trillion was the implied valuation at a hypothetical $300,000 Bitcoin price.
- Options positioning: the article reported interest in June calls at that strike, citing Amberdata data seen by Bloomberg.
- Price prediction: a popular strike does not prove Bitcoin will reach it.
