In March 2024, satellite imagery showed fuller parking areas at Tesla’s Texas factory than imagery from October 2023. The images came amid a clear quarterly gap: Tesla produced 433,371 vehicles in Q1 2024 and delivered 386,810, a difference of 46,561. Together, those facts support a story about a buildup of vehicles—but they do not prove that every car visible was unsold, or establish Tesla’s inventory today.
What did the satellite images show?
In a June 6, 2024 report, Sherwood News compared selected imagery of Tesla’s Gigafactory Texas from October 2023 and March 2024. It described the factory parking areas shown in the later images as more full. Sherwood said it used imagery and object-detection analytics from SkyFi.
A former Tesla production lead, who had recently been laid off, told Sherwood that the lots featured in the report held finished vehicles before shipment. The account is attributed to that unnamed source; it is not an independently verified inventory record.
A second site: Chesterfield Mall
Sherwood also reported that Tesla had been storing excess inventory at Chesterfield Mall outside St. Louis. SkyFi counted 465 Teslas in imagery of the site from May 2024, according to Sherwood. That is an image-based count at one location and one point in time, not a companywide inventory total.

How large was Tesla’s production-delivery gap?
Tesla’s Q1 2024 update, published April 23, reported 433,371 vehicles produced and 386,810 delivered. Subtracting deliveries from production gives a gap of 46,561 vehicles—about 47,000. Sherwood characterized the imbalance as Tesla’s largest to date at the time of its report and more than twice the year-earlier difference.
Tesla reported that deliveries were down 9% year over year in the quarter. Its totals comprised 412,376 Model 3/Y vehicles and 20,995 other models produced; deliveries comprised 369,783 Model 3/Y vehicles and 17,027 other models.

Production versus deliveries is not the same as inventory
The 46,561 figure compares two flows over a quarter: vehicles made and vehicles delivered. Tesla separately reported 28 days of global vehicle inventory at the end of Q1 2024, compared with 15 days in Q1 2023. Tesla defines inventory days by dividing ending new-vehicle inventory by deliveries for the relevant quarter and using 75 trading days. The days-of-supply measure is an ending-stock measure, not another way of expressing the quarterly production-delivery gap.
Do the images prove the cars were unsold?
No. The images show vehicles in particular parking areas on particular dates. They do not reveal the sale or delivery status of every vehicle. Sherwood noted that some cars could have been en route to owners, and said it could not determine whether additional cars were in certain employee and contractor lots.

- What the imagery supports: the selected Texas parking areas appeared fuller in March 2024 than in October 2023, and SkyFi counted 465 Teslas at the Chesterfield Mall site in May 2024, as reported by Sherwood.
- What it does not establish: the status of every visible vehicle, a verified companywide count from imagery, or a full reconciliation between the photographed cars and Tesla’s reported quarterly inventory.
Tesla did not respond to Sherwood’s questions about the imagery or its requests for comment, according to the report.

Discussing Tesla’s negative free cash flow, Chief Financial Officer Vaibhav Taneja attributed it partly to inventory. Sherwood quoted him: “The primary driver of this was an increase in inventory from a mismatch between builds,” Tesla Chief Financial Officer Vaibhav Taneja said of the company’s -$2.5 billion in free cash flow (spending on AI compute was also to blame). “We expect the inventory built to reverse in the second quarter and free cash flow to return to positive again.”

Tesla’s quarterly update listed negative free cash flow of $2.5 billion and an inventory increase of $2.7 billion among the drivers of the sequential cash decrease. Taneja’s expectation that inventory would reverse in Q2 was a forecast at the time, not evidence that the reversal occurred.
How to read this story today
The images and company figures document a specific episode in early 2024: Tesla produced more vehicles than it delivered in Q1, reported higher inventory days than in Q1 2023, and had fuller parking areas at selected locations in the imagery described by Sherwood. They do not establish Tesla’s current inventory, demand, or vehicle availability. The Gizmodo headline appeared June 10, 2024, while the underlying imagery report was published by Sherwood News on June 6.
