The group says the broader consolidation took place in 2018. The available corporate material does not establish that Tata Sons incorporated a separate company with the legal name “Tata Aerospace & Defence.”
Was a new Tata Aerospace & Defence company formed?
Tata’s own descriptions use “Tata A&D” for the consolidated aerospace and defence business. Its current overview says five businesses were brought together as one entity, while Tata’s February 2025 account identifies Tata Advanced Systems Limited as the group’s strategic aerospace and defence entity and says the consolidation occurred in 2018. These descriptions support understanding Tata A&D as a group business label and consolidation, anchored by TASL—not as proof of a newly incorporated standalone company. Tata’s Aerospace and Defence overview and its February 2025 account describe the structure.
What was consolidated, and when?
Tata says the 2018 consolidation brought together businesses including Tata Power SED, TAL Manufacturing, Tata Advanced Materials, and Tata Motors’ defence division under TASL. The stated strategic aim was to simplify the group’s structure, create synergies, and build the scale to pursue integrated offerings and larger, more complex work.
The consolidation was a broader group initiative; it should not be confused with the separate legal steps involving Tata Motors:

- May 2018: Tata Motors announced a proposal to transfer its defence business to TASL and sell its stake in TAL Manufacturing Solutions to TASL, subject to required approvals. It said its civilian vehicle business would remain with Tata Motors. Tata Motors’ announcement describes the proposal.
- 1 April 2021: The defence-business transfer took effect through a slump sale under a scheme approved by the National Company Law Tribunal, according to Tata Motors’ later reporting. Tata Motors’ annual reports document the completed transfer.
So, 2018 is the date Tata gives for the wider consolidation; 1 April 2021 is the effective date of the specific Tata Motors defence-business transfer.
What does TASL do?
Tata describes TASL as a wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Sons and divides its activities into four areas. These are company-stated capabilities, not an independent assessment of its market position. Tata’s 2025 company account gives the divisions and scope.

The group says its work spans design through platform assembly. Its overview also names fighters, helicopters, transport aircraft, weapon and land systems, unmanned systems, and aero-engine component manufacturing as focus areas. Those are stated priorities; they do not establish that every program has been awarded or delivered. Tata’s overview of aerospace and defence outlines those priorities.
How partnerships fit into the structure
TASL’s work includes joint ventures with global aerospace companies. Tata Sons’ FY2024–25 annual report lists the following ownership interests as at 31 March 2025; the figures are a dated snapshot and should not be assumed to remain unchanged after that date. Tata Sons’ FY2024–25 Annual Report is the source for these holdings.

The C295 project: a concrete example
The C295 programme shows what the group’s manufacturing ambitions look like in practice. Tata Advanced Systems and Airbus said the Vadodara final assembly line was inaugurated on 28 October 2024 as part of a project to deliver 56 C295 aircraft to the Indian Air Force. Their release called it India’s first private-sector aircraft final assembly line. The Tata Advanced Systems–Airbus release gives those details.
In a separate release on 28 October 2024, India’s Ministry of Defence said six of the 16 aircraft to be brought to India in fly-away condition had been inducted into the Air Force, and that the first Made-in-India C295 was expected to roll out by September 2026. These are figures and a forecast reported on that date, not a current delivery update. The Ministry of Defence release provides the dated status.

What the headline does—and does not—mean
Read “Tata Aerospace & Defence” as the name Tata uses for the consolidated business, with TASL as its corporate anchor. Tata dates the broad consolidation to 2018, while the transfer of Tata Motors’ defence business became effective in 2021. The available sources do not verify a separate incorporation for a company named Tata Aerospace & Defence, so the headline should not be taken as evidence that Tata Sons created a new standalone legal entity.
