On October 29, 2025, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai called the company’s Q3 results its “first-ever $100 billion quarter.” Alphabet reported $102.3 billion in consolidated revenue for the quarter ended September 30—up 16% year over year, or 15% after adjusting for currency movements. The milestone was for Alphabet as a whole, not Google Search alone.

What Pichai said about the milestone

In his opening remarks on Alphabet’s Q3 2025 earnings call, Pichai described a company growing across its major businesses and said AI was contributing to business results. He put the quarter in perspective with a comparison to five years earlier:

“This was a terrific quarter for Alphabet, driven by double-digit growth across every major part of our business. We’re seeing AI now driving real business results across the company.”

“We delivered our first-ever $100 billion quarter. Five years ago our quarterly revenue was at $50 billion. Our revenue number has doubled since then, and we’re firmly in the generative AI era.”

“Our momentum is strong and we’re shipping at speed.”

The approximately $50 billion figure is Pichai’s rounded retrospective comparison. The current-quarter figure comes from Alphabet’s earnings release, which reports revenue of $102.3 billion.

How Alphabet’s Q3 revenue was distributed

Alphabet’s release shows growth in both Google Services and Google Cloud. The figures below are for the quarter ended September 30, 2025, and are reported by Alphabet.

Business or measure Q3 2025 result Year-over-year change
Alphabet consolidated revenue $102.3 billion Up 16% (15% in constant currency)
Google Services revenue $87.1 billion Up 14%
Google Cloud revenue $15.2 billion Up 34%

Alphabet said Search & other, YouTube ads, subscriptions/platforms/devices, and Google Cloud each recorded double-digit growth. Cloud’s 34% growth rate was faster than Services’ 14%, but Cloud accounted for $15.2 billion of the $102.3 billion total. The reported results do not establish that AI alone caused the record: Alphabet’s revenue spans multiple businesses, and the company did not attribute the entire increase to AI.

What Pichai cited as evidence of AI momentum

Pichai’s remarks linked AI to product use, customer demand and subscriptions. These are figures reported by management in its remarks, rather than independent measurements or segment revenue:

  • First-party models, including Gemini, processed 7 billion tokens per minute through direct API use.
  • The Gemini app had more than 650 million monthly active users; Pichai said queries had tripled from Q2.
  • Google Cloud backlog grew 46% quarter over quarter to $155 billion.
  • Paid subscriptions passed 300 million, led by Google One and YouTube Premium.

The earnings release separately reported $15.2 billion in Google Cloud revenue, up 34%, and said growth reflected GCP across core products, AI infrastructure and generative AI solutions. Usage, backlog and subscriber figures help explain management’s account of momentum; they should not be read as revenue figures or as proof that AI independently produced a particular share of quarterly growth.

Profit and investment: the context behind the record

Revenue growth is only one part of the earnings picture. Alphabet reported diluted earnings per share of $2.87, up 35% year over year. Its reported operating margin was 30.5%. The company also presented a 33.9% operating margin excluding a $3.5 billion European Commission fine; that adjusted figure is a non-GAAP presentation and is not the unadjusted result.

Alphabet’s release gave expected 2025 capital expenditure of $91 billion to $93 billion. That was management’s outlook when the release was issued, not a final full-year spending figure or current guidance. The release was dated October 29, 2025, and cautioned that forward-looking statements could differ from actual results.

How to read the “$100 billion quarter” claim

  • It refers to Alphabet’s consolidated revenue. The reported amount was $102.3 billion for Q3 2025, not $100 billion in Search revenue.
  • Currency affects the growth comparison. Reported year-over-year growth was 16%; constant-currency growth was 15%.
  • Growth was broad, not confined to AI. Services and Cloud both grew, as did several major product lines.
  • Management’s AI indicators are not the same as audited financial segment measures. They describe usage, backlog and subscriptions, while the release supplies the revenue and profitability figures.
  • The remarks are historical. Pichai made them on the Q3 2025 call; the capex outlook and other management commentary describe what the company said at that time.
