CEO Brian Niccol outlined the approach on October 30, 2024; later, Starbucks said a sequencing system called Smart Queue improved service at locations where it was deployed.
What Brian Niccol said on his first earnings call
On Starbucks’ October 30, 2024, Q4 and full-year earnings call, Niccol said mobile orders drove more than 30% of transactions. During peak periods, he said, incoming orders could be difficult to sequence and hand off quickly. His stated aim was to address that pressure: “And finally, we’ll bring order to Mobile Order and Pay, so it doesn’t overwhelm our cafes.” Starbucks’ corrected Q4 FY2024 earnings-call transcript is the primary source for his remarks.
Niccol described three operational levers: develop a better way to sequence orders for on-time handoffs, add “common sense guardrails” to mobile ordering, and better separate mobile pickup from the cafe experience. Starbucks did not describe this as a single new app feature or provide a detailed public specification of the guardrails on that call.
Why Starbucks wanted to change the order flow
The problem Niccol described was a mismatch between the volume and timing of orders and a cafe’s ability to prepare, sequence, and hand them off. GeekWire’s contemporaneous report identified inaccurate wait times and in-store congestion as customer pain points, and characterized the proposed changes as better sequencing, limits on customization, and dedicated pickup areas. That is reporting context; the earnings-call transcript establishes what Niccol himself said.

The mobile-order effort belonged to a broader “throughput with quality” plan. Starbucks said it wanted cafe customers’ handcrafted drinks hand-delivered in four minutes or less and mobile orders handed off on time. Other elements included staffing stores for peak periods, simplifying the menu, expanding Siren equipment and processes, restoring cafe seating and amenities, and revisiting pricing. The aim was to improve speed without treating the cafe as a production line at the expense of the in-store experience.
What Starbucks later reported about Smart Queue
On its July 29, 2025, Q3 earnings call, Starbucks said it was rolling out Smart Queue, an order-sequencing technology, alongside Green Apron Service. At locations where Smart Queue had been deployed, management reported a double-digit improvement in cafe orders handed off in under four minutes, with 80% of in-cafe orders meeting that target. Starbucks also said mobile orders were more accurate and on time at those locations. These figures describe the company’s reported results at deployment locations, not an independent evaluation or a result established for every store. See the Q3 FY2025 earnings-call transcript.

Starbucks’ January 2026 Investor Day transcript offered a broader update: the company said that in its first-quarter reporting it had achieved average peak service under four minutes in cafe and drive-thru, and that mobile orders were accurate and on time. This is a portfolio-level company statement. It does not show that every store, peak period, or individual order met those standards. The company’s Investor Day transcript provides the statement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the updates do—and do not—show
- The plan moved from stated intent to reported deployment: Smart Queue is the named sequencing technology Starbucks later said it was rolling out.
- The reported service results have different scopes: the 2025 under-four-minute figures apply to locations where Smart Queue was deployed; the January 2026 statement describes average peak service across the portfolio.
- The evidence is company-reported: the cited updates do not provide independent measurements of wait-time accuracy, order accuracy, customer satisfaction, or store-by-store rollout.
- Pickup redesign is not established as complete: Starbucks’ renovation plans do not prove that mobile pickup areas have been changed at every cafe.
In the Q3 FY2025 call, Starbucks also described a North American coffeehouse uplift program targeting approximately $150,000 per store and at least 1,000 uplifts by the end of calendar 2026. Those are company targets for renovations, not evidence that pickup redesign had been completed everywhere. Starbucks’ Q3 FY2025 transcript discusses the program.
